"Ms. Bai, that woman over there came into our office early in the morning. She's brought a contract and said that she's the new boss here. What is going on? Do you know about it?" Joyce ran to Emily and asked with a disbelieving and worried look on her face. She didn't even wait for Emily to step out of the elevator. Such was her concern.

Joyce had glanced over the contract, which was why she and her colleagues hadn't kicked Michelle out of the building. But they couldn't make any decisions until Emily showed up. To them, Emily was their boss.

Emily stopped walking and had the same confused expression on her face. She then turned to look at Michelle. Everyone froze on the spot, and held their breath, as the two women made eye contact. The atmosphere was so tense that it could be cut with a knife. Both Emily and Michelle didn't say a word, but looked at each other placidly, preoccupied with their own troubles as they each pondered what the other party would do later.

A long moment later, Emily looked away from Michelle. She was the first to break eye contact. Emily had tried her best to keep her business face on, but inwardly, she had collapsed, and she felt her heart sinking into a bottomless pit. She then glanced at the document that Michelle was holding and continued on her way to her office.

Now that Michelle had shown up here at such an early hour, it must be true that Jacob had agreed to make her the new boss here. It was her personal business, and Emily didn't want to get any of her employees involved. They needed their jobs to earn a living, whether she was the boss or not. Thus, she planned to take Michelle to her office, and to settle it quietly between the two of them.

Her heart was aching as she moved her feet mechanically, and then it turned numb. It seemed that Jacob was very impatient to kick Emily out of his life. Emily had just signed the divorce agreement the previous day, but he couldn't wait to sever all their connections. He had not only asked her to return all the things he had bought for her, but now he was taking the company which he had established for her away, and he was giving it to another woman. Worse, he was giving it to her love rival!

What a ridiculous situation it was! Emily smiled to herself sadly. The light in her clear bright eyes faded away little by little, and the pain in her heart spread to every pore of her body.

After she signed the divorce agreement, Jacob would have nothing to do with her, and this company was the last thing they had owned together. But now she was forced to hand it to his new partner, a woman she didn't want to even lay eyes on.

"Here is the document. Jacob has already signed his name on it. Both of us are aware what that means. I hope you can pack up your things and leave here as soon as possible. I may need to redecorate this office," Michelle said in a nonchalant tone, enunciating every syllable clearly, like a bullet to Emily's heart.

She had followed Emily to the office. She didn't want to make a scene in front of all the employees either. Since this company had fallen into her pocket, she was the boss here, whether Emily wanted to admit it or not. Besides, she needed the help and experience of the employees to go through the first steps of the transition in ownership. She would be doomed if they left with Emily. Michelle knew nothing about jewelry design, and believed that Emily's pride wouldn't allow Emily to act like a shrew. Thus, the two women happened to hold the same view as they sat down across the table from each other.

Emily took her seat in her usual place behind the table and took the document in her hands. She leafed through the document page by page with trembling fingers, and finally, she saw Jacob's signature on the last page. She fixed her eyes on it, a

rk side. She thought that now was the right time to leave. She stood up, cracked an ironic smile, and then left.

As the sound of the door closing reached Emily's ears, she collapsed on the ground, gasping for air. She had finally been utterly overwhelmed by her deep sorrow and need for vengeance. She was so disturbed that she had shed all of her mien.

Outside the office, the employees watched Michelle head to the elevator like a strutting peacock, even though her cheek was bright red and swollen. Some of those who were close to Emily hesitated at the door, wondering if it was the right moment for them to come in and comfort her. But they dropped the idea, afraid that they would make her feel more embarrassed.

"Argh!" Emily roared like a beast.

She then closed her eyes in misery, feeling like the sky had fallen down. Jacob was taking the most important thing in her heart from her and stabbing a sharp knife into it at the same time. She bit down on her lip so hard that she drew blood. A moment later, she opened her eyes, and the first thing that she spotted was the photo of Jacob and her. Broken glass could never be joined to look like a new one.

It took her a whole day to pack up her stuff. She only took a few personal belongings with her, and she threw everything else into the trash can. She then moved out of her office as the sun was sinking into the west.

All the employees were waiting outside. None of them had gone back home, though it was long past the end of the day.

"Ms. Bai, are you leaving us?"

"Ms. Bai, isn't there anything we can do?"

"Ms. Bai, please, don't go!"

They all spoke at once. It was not their decision to make, but they hated to part with her because they had been getting along very well with her, and there was a sense of family in the business. They all looked up to Emily as their matriarch.

Emily sighed, tears welling up in her eyes. She also hated to part with them. It had been such fun to work with these talented people, and to do the things she really loved. But she had no other choice now except to leave.

"Sorry for letting you guys down. Sorry!" she murmured.

Then, she hastened her steps to the elevator, leaving behind these people whom she cherished and who respected her. It was better to have short sharp pains than a long and dull ache. She secretly hoped that Michelle would treat them well.

Taking leave was one of the hardest things to do, but from another point of view, when there was a departure, there could be a reunion in the future.
