It all made sense. Leah had said that Cherish would be here soon. So, when he saw her arrive at the house, he should not have been surprised at all. It had to make sense.

Carlos only knew Cherish vaguely. The last time he had seen her, he had been forced into going on a blind date with her. Back then, he hadn't paid her much attention. She had shown up with a thick layer of makeup on her eyes and overly rosy flushed cheeks; it had been too much. However, today she looked quite different. She hadn't even bothered to wear lipstick.

Even without makeup, Carlos looked at her and saw a woman with a pure and lovely aura round her. He was captivated.

Carlos felt like he was frozen in place. He took a moment to collect his thoughts and tried to get her attention the only way he could think of. He called out to her, "Ms. Shen?"

Cherish, on the other hand, was lost in deep thought. She too was captivated by what she saw. Carlos looked absolutely handsome. His voice boomed with so much magnetism when he spoke her name that she briefly lost her balance and awkwardly stumbled back a few steps.

Concerned that she was about to fall to the ground, Carlos quickly reached out his hand to support her. With his muscular arms, he steadied her and helped her stand upright. "Ms. Shen, please be careful," he said in a gentle tone.

Cherish's face flushed crimson from ear to ear and all she could do was give a timid nod in response. Of all the times to be clumsy, now was the worst. Although her carefree and easygoing personality was charming, it came with the price of carelessness. Her elder brother often chided her for not paying enough attention to things, but with him, it didn't matter. Now, face to face with a handsome man that she fancied, it was mortifying. Just this once, she hoped that she could behave like a proper lady with elegance and grace. At the very least, she wanted to leave a good impression on him. It was clear to her now that she had failed in doing so.

She knew that she should have listened to her brother and worked on changing her personality. At this rate, she would never find her Mr. Right.

They both remained quiet for a few heartbeats. As the silence permeated the air, Cherish became more embarrassed with each passing second. She knew that it was her fault for breaking into his room without notice. Now, the atmosphere was painfully awkward.

A torrent of thoughts rushed through her head and she didn't quite know what to do. Finally, she raised her head slightly and looked at him with all of her courage. "Call me Cherish," she said with feigned confidence. "I would prefer if you didn't treat me like a complete stranger," she continued.

Carlos's expression changed instantly. Her efforts to come off as friendly and intimate were not taken well. "Ms. Shen, you have to be joking. This is only the third time that we have met. We are barely acquaintances."

"But we are actually..." she began.

Cherish's face flushed again and she felt feverish. She tried raising her voice to get her point across. He needed to understand that sooner or later, they were going to be engaged anyway, so it wouldn't matter if they'd only met a few times. They would be a family eventually despite all of these difficulties. But before she could finish her sentence, Carlos interrupted hastily.

"Actually, Ms. Shen, you've come at the right time. I have something to tell you. Please follow me."

Carlos wrapped his bathrobe tighter around his waist and, without hesitation, turned to walk into the room behind him. His words resonated in her ears and instantly lightened her mood. Her sense of loss disappeared all of a sudden and, with a radiant smile, she followed him in

ist was intense. She twisted her lips in pain as she tried to wriggle her wrist free of his hold. She could almost feel her heart pumping in her throat. Gritting her teeth, Cherish turned her head and saw that Carlos's face was deathly pale with even more sweat streaming down his forehead and onto his clothes.

Seeing his beautiful face suffering from great pain, Cherish was overcome with grief. Carlos's head moved an inch, and she saw his lips moving just enough to signal that he was trying to say something to her. She immediately squatted down in front of him and put her ear close to his mouth. She heard a gentle murmur escape his lips as he said in a weak voice, "Don't let anyone know about..." "About what?" she stammered. "...about my illness."

These last words apparently used up all his remaining energy because his eyes lost all color and he blacked out. His body slumped gently back onto the sofa.

Finally, Cherish felt the tightness around her wrist loosen and fade as his hand flopped onto his lap. For a brief second, she felt as if her heart was stabbed by a thin sharp knife and she felt wounded to her core. No words could express the immense sadness that washed over her as she stared at his seemingly lifeless body.

With tears now freely falling down her cheeks in rapid succession, she flung herself into Carlos's motionless arms. She shook him gently to make sure that he wasn't dead and only in some sort of coma. Looking at his helpless frame, she used all of her strength to straighten his body on the sofa so that he looked more like his usual self. Despite whatever illness he suffered, Cherish felt a great sense of relief knowing that he was still breathing. With renewed fortitude, she took a deep breath, ran over to the bathroom, and grabbed a towel from the pantry. She soaked it in cold water, squeezed out the excess, and returned to Carlos with the cold towel. Carefully and gently, she wiped the sweat from his face and neck.

Even though she tried to concentrate on the task of cooling off Carlos's body, she couldn't hold back her tears. It had never occurred to her that Carlos was suffering in silence.

Judging from Carlos's behavior, this was clearly not the first time that the illness had overcome him. Although she had no idea what kind of illness it was, she just couldn't stand the thought of him suffering. It was killing her inside and all that she wanted to do was to find a way to keep him from suffering any further.
