Jacob didn't say anything further. After a while, the telephone located in the private room rang. Emily answered the phone and listened to the polite waiter on the other end of the line. With the waiter's guidance, she ordered a range of specialty dishes.

Jacob was afraid that Emily hadn't ordered enough food, so he asked, "Do you want to order something more?"

Emily shook her head and said, "No, it's enough!"

"Honey, please order enough to ensure that I won't go home hungry tonight. Otherwise, I won't have the strength to drive you back home." Jacob rested his hand on Emily's. She still looked a little pale, so he was extra wary of upsetting her whenever they were together, because he feared that she would suffer an emotional setback.

"Okay, but if you gain weight, you'll be mine only!" Emily said half-jokingly.

However, Jacob suddenly turned serious. "I will always be yours. Always!"

This simple statement instantly melted away the lingering depression that had plagued Emily's heart. Her eyes gleamed like stars, and she said with determination in her voice, "Yes, Jacob, you are always mine."

While Jacob was mesmerized by Emily's big smile, the door of the private room was suddenly opened. "Sir, madam, your order is ready."

Having set the plates with piping hot food on the table, the waiter said to Emily, "Madam, please eat slowly and carefully. There is a surprise for you."

A surprise? Emily blinked, feeling slightly confused, and nodded. The waiter immediately left with the empty tray and closed the door to give them some privacy.

Jacob's face darkened as he looked at the table decked out with the so-called "delicious dishes" that Emily had ordered.

She looked across at Jacob, who seemed to be looking dejected upon seeing the dishes. Pointing at the durian cake, she said, "Come on, there might be a surprise!"

"It's okay that you've ordered a durian flavored cake. But what are those? Preserved eggs? Preserved eggs mixed with bean curd. Well, so what's this black thing? It is square, and it smells so stinky."

In fact, Jacob wanted to ask Emily why this insignificant restaurant had caught her attention and why she had asked him to drive all the way from the central part to the southern side of the city just to have dinner here. Earlier, he had asked Sam to hide a necklace in one of the dishes. Was it possible that Sam had slipped it inside the durian cake?

Jacob's eyes turned to inspect the durian cake.

Emily noticed that Jacob didn't look interested in the food, and that his eyes were fixated on the durian cake. She pushed the cake to Jac

am would come up with clumsier ideas.

Looking for the missing pendant in all the remaining bean curd, Jacob still couldn't find it in the curd. Although Jacob didn't care that the pendant had cost a small fortune, it did reflect his love for Emily. Having found no trace of the pendant, he felt like he had disappointed her, so he said, "Emily, the pendant is missing!"

"Is it possible that it has perhaps ended up in the other dishes? You should make another call to Sam to check." Emily was not stupid. She had known quite clearly that Jacob and Sam had been discussing the pendant and the necklace just now.

"Keep an eye out for it." Jacob quickly phoned Sam. He instantly asked, "Why didn't you hide the necklace inside the cake? Why did you hide it inside the fermented bean curd?"

"Boss, didn't you say that you wanted to ensure that Lady Emily would remember this forever?" Sam's voice became a little whiny, and he sounded quite aggrieved. Jacob unobtrusively glanced at Emily, only to see her grabbing the food on the table while gobbling down the curd.

All of a sudden, his mood improved.

His tone of voice showed his relief. "So where did you put the pendant?"

"The pendant?" Sam sounded surprised. "I put both the necklace and the pendant in the fermented bean curd, boss."

"Both in the curd, then where..." Jacob's eyes suddenly widened, and he looked at Emily when panic filled his eyes. "Emily, do you perhaps have a strange feeling in your throat? Did you feel anything hard when you were eating the food?"

"Huh?" Emily swallowed her mouthful of curd and touched her throat reflexively as she shook her head. "I'm not stupid. If there really was a pendant in the curd, I certainly couldn't have eaten it."
