Over the past three days, Beryl hadn't acted any differently. But at times she would stare at Emily's belly, as if wanting the baby to be born right away, or so Jacob thought. He considered that he was perhaps being too sensitive to misinterpret a child's facial expression.

That night, Jacob had to go out to handle a case, so Emily tucked Beryl in early.

She then went to bed and slipped into a deep sleep. Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her arm and awoke with a scream.

She sat up in bed, turned on the light to search for the cause of the pain, when she saw Beryl sitting by her bedside. The child regarded her with a look devoid of emotion, unconcerned by the blood streaming from her mother's arm.

She felt lightheaded with pain, she took a deep breath to steady herself, "Beryl, what are you doing here?"

The side of Beryl's face was streaked with blood, and her eyes were vacantly staring at the spectacle. There was something in her hand, it was so out of place as to make her seem like a twisted doll. She kept muttering to herself, "So much blood."

The white sheets were becoming stained crimson by the gushing blood. Following a mother's instinct, Emily took the knife out of Beryl's hand, oblivious to her own injury. "Where did you find this? Beryl, answer me. Why do you have this ..."

Suddenly the child reacted like her button had been pressed, and she was only now switched on. She began crying bitterly, and looked at the wound in Emily's arm as if she was seeing it for the first time. Great tears welled up in her wide eyes and rolled down her shaking cheeks. "Mommy, you lost so much blood! Are you injured badly? I'm sorry, this is all my fault! I didn't mean to do this ..." She wailed.

Seeing Beryl's heart-rending crying, Emily was unwilling to blame her child. "Don't cry. Mommy would never blame you. You are just not well ..."

"Mommy, please hit me. This is the only way that I wouldn't feel so bad about myself ..." She was really frightened of what her mother would do next. Although she had caused much trouble for her parents, she never meant to hurt them.

Even though she did intentionally hurt Belle, Emily was different. After all, she was her mother ... She had stabbed her with the knife quite unconsciously, as if controlled by some ghost. It baffled her why she would at time lose control like this. But now, she finally realized her inab

ble! How could she hurt her beloved mother?

When Beryl sat up, Emily awoke, and seeing her tear-stained face, she instantly worried, "What's wrong? My baby girl, are you hurting somewhere?"

"My heart!" She pointed to her heart, and said with remorse, "Mommy, I know I did something very bad. But don't leave me ... If mommy doesn't love me, then no-one in the whole world will love me, ever again!"

"I will never leave you, my little girl." Emily was heart-broken upon hearing her words. She pulled Beryl into a tight embrace, stroking her back soothingly, "It's okay. No matter what you do, I will always forgive you."

She wept then, losing control. Like a girl hypnotized by the darkness she had finally come to her senses.

Emily coaxed her with a soft voice, and wiped her tears tenderly. "Look at your little face. It is as dirty as that of a little alley cat. Don't cry! Get up and mommy will make you a delicious breakfast."

"Okay." With a nasal twang from weepy sinuses, she sniveled, "I will go brush my teeth."

"Good girl." Emily felt the stone which had weighed her heart down lift, and she could breathe easier than she had in a long time. She climbed from the bed and went to the kitchen to make some breakfast.

The eggs were broken into the bowl, but as she was about to whisk them, a pair of long arms surprised her from behind, wrapping around her waist intimately, "Why are you up so early today?"

She stifled a shriek of fright and almost upset the eggs from the bowl.

"Why are you so tense?" Jacob laughed by her ear lightly, his voice strong and magnetic.
