"Ah!" Pain throbbed so violently in Emily's head that it felt as if someone had taken a knife to her skull. Squeezing her eyes shut, Emily willed the pain to go away.

Emily was a helpless prisoner in her cage of pain.

She breathed deeply so as to calm herself down, but the longer the pain took to dissipate, the less calm she felt.

Time seemed to pass slower than usual as there was no light here.

After Emily had lost track of time, she could no longer tell what time of the day it was. She felt like someone had pushed her down the abyss, endlessly spiralling down into nothingness.

Why? Why would she have to suffer all this?

Had she done something wrong? All she wanted was to protect the one she loved so as to keep their love alive. Why couldn't God grant her that one wish she had?

Giving up was starting to seem like a justifiable option.

Emily was caught in a tug of war in her mind, between the angel that represented conscience and the demon that represented self-interest.

The demon in her head said to her, "He has always treated you badly. What's the point of holding on to such a man? This man is no longer the Jacob who used to love you! He is another person now! The Jacob who loved you died a long time ago!"

The angel, however, expressed its disagreement. "Pfft! That's nonsense! Jacob will always be Jacob! Somebody tampered with his memory. If you give up on him now, there will be no one left who can save him. Don't give up!"

War between the two sides waged on in her head, and she got caught up in the violent crossfire.

The rest of the world became detached. All she could concentrate on was the pain rooted deep in her head, and she begged for release. "Shut up! Just stop talking!"

Meanwhile, outside.

Jacob was watching Emily's every movement at the basement through the night vision surveillance cameras. She was curled up on the bedroom floor, with her hands covering her face, kicking and screaming in agony.

There were times when Jacob wanted to rush down to the basement to comfort that woman into his arms, but he tried very hard to restrain this impulsion.

He had to be strong, for the betterment of Emily.

Jacob had to make sure Emily knew the consequences of havi

ing something very important to him gripped his body and he could no longer hide the panic inside his mind.

His doubts and regrets overwhelmed him from within.

As he was still confused about his feelings for Emily, he couldn't allow her to give up on him so easily! Wasn't she in love with him? Then she should continue to feel so.

"I'm sorry. I'm just tired." Emily's raspy voice was proof of her exhaustion. She was like a traveler who had walked a long way through the desert, only to give up on finding the oasis in the last minute.

Hope had left her before she could hold on.

It seemed as though this experience was the last straw that broke the camel's back.

Jacob's pupils contracted sharply, and then a wave of thoughts surged up in his head, like a flood hitting all his nerves at once.

All the sweet and sour memories he had from the past came rushing into his head.

The excruciating pain made his face turn pale and the pain in his head came out like an uproar from his throat as he rolled around on the floor like a wounded animal.

What was that? Were these the memories he had lost?

He seemed to remember losing a great deal of memories from his past life. Who the hell was that person?

"E..m...i...l...y."

Jacob enunciated the name slowly in his mind as if it drained the life out of him to do so. "I remember."

'I'm sorry, my love.'

Emily thought she was hallucinating, so she stayed put like a lifeless doll.

What did she hear just now?
