Ring, ring, ring!

The hurried ringing of the telephone interrupted the conversation between the two men. Darren signaled to Agni and then answered the phone. "President, Miss He has woken up, but she is crying and screaming again. Now she has gone on a hunger strike. What do you...?"

Darren's eyes darkened as he interrupted in a low and anxious voice that he was not even aware of, "Wait, I'll come back right away."

Rita was not eating or drinking anything as she was on a hunger strike. Darren could not just ignore her because she was pregnant with David's baby.

After hanging up the phone, Darren left in a hurry, leaving Agni alone in the office.

Agni was suspicious and followed Darren, but Darren got rid of him halfway down the hall.

In a private villa, Rita leaned against the corner of the wall, gently touching her tummy with both hands. Her lean body appeared even thinner in the over-sized pajamas she was wearing.

Her face was expressionless and her eyes were empty, while her long black hair blocked her pale cheeks from sight. At the moment, she looked like a very sick person who had lived in a hospital for a long time already.

The curtain obscured the bright morning sunshine. If it weren't for the dim light, Darren would hardly have seen her in the room.

"President, Miss He seems to be depressed. She has been shutting herself in the room ever since she woke up. She has not seen the light. Although she is crying, she just repeats the names of several people. The nutritional meals delivered by the doctor are either knocked over by her or left there untouched."

The medical staff were concerned and truthfully conveyed Rita's situation to Darren.

"Um,"

Darren responded and raised his hand, signaling the medical staff to leave. In three seconds, only he and Rita remained in the room. It was silent, as if they could hear each other's breathing and hearts beating.

Thud!

He went into the room and closed the door behind him. The sound was very loud in the quiet room, but it seemed as if nothing could be heard. Rita was still huddled in the corner.

Darren stepped forward and sat down beside her. As his deep eyes took in her red and swollen eyes and her pale cheeks, he felt slightly

asted like wax, Rita was willing to endure it as long as the baby would be well protected.

Since Dylan and Beryl had been left behind in the fire and their safety was uncertain, Rita could only stay strong. Only she could save herself from this.

In a hospital

Beryl's tiny body stood outside the ICU, her clear pearl-like eyes tightly locked on the man on the bed. He was so wrapped up in medical equipment that it was almost hard to tell who he was.

It had been three days since the fire, and there was still no sign that Jacob would wake up.

"Aunt Michelle, can't my father wake up? Does he not want me and my brother?" Beryl's eyes were red and swollen, and her voice was full of grief.

Despite everything that she had been through in her short life, Beryl was still just a child. She hadn't seen her mother for nearly a month. Now her tall father, who she had believed to be indestructible, had been brought down and was lying helpless here, right in front of her. Even though she had a strong psychological constitution, she could not bear such a change.

"Beryl, your father will wake up. He will not only take care of you and your brother, but he will also find your mother! So you have to believe in your father. Only you are his strongest support. If you don't believe in him now, then how can he feel your strength and wake up?"

Michelle crouched down slightly and comforted Beryl in a soft voice.

"Well, I do believe in Daddy!" Beryl bit her lip and nodded firmly.
