Yu Dayou didn’t care about trivial matters, for instance, being clean. Inside his tent, it was not very messy but it did not mean that it was clean either. Yet, for some reason today, when Lu Yi entered the tent, on the left side there sat a pile of protective armour, filling the left side completely, and Yu Dayou was seen sitting on them, looking very happy as if he was going to win a jackpot.

“Brother, come quickly and take a look! I’ve found some good stuff!” Yu Dayou said, as soon as he saw Lu Yi, and burst into laughter.

Lu Yi lifted a piece of armour and examined it: “This is…. silver thread armour?”

“You definitely know your stuff!” Yu Dayou laughed and said, “I was able to pick up some of them, just at the right time for us to use them.”

A silver thread armour is usually made using cotton gin. Cotton is tucked into the lines of the suit, sewn roughly and tightly together, and afterward, soak it in water. Then, pull out and lay on the floor, and then use your foot to step on them, until they’re no longer puffing up, lastly, it’s to let it dry under the sun. This type of armour consists of cotton with silver threads tucked in between, the suit is very light and thin, but the level of durability and flexibility is greater than any other armour. When a silver thread armour comes in contact with rain, it will not be puffed up, become heavy, or get mouldy, and the person wearing it will not get hurt.

“Brother, this costs quite a bit of money, doesn’t it?” Lu Yi asked.

Yu Dayou clearly didn’t want to talk about this: “There’s no need to talk about money. Tell me, is this good or not?”

“Of course it’s good.” Lu Yi said with a slight laugh.

“If it’s good, then that’s enough! Later, you go call people to come and try them on, see if we need to fix anything, because we need to hurry….” While Yu Dayou was talking, his eyes glanced over at the person behind Lu Yi, who was slowly walking towards the armour and putting them on. Yu Dayou continued to stare at the unfamiliar face, “Who are you?”

Lan Daoxing’s head popped out of the armour.  While facing Yu Dayou, he laughed and said: “I’ve been admiring General Yu for a long time, finally have a chance to meet you today. General is my hero, I really respect you!”

Yu Dayou looked at Lu Yi in astonishment. Even though he was speechless, the look in his eyes said: where did this thug come from?

Lu Yi pulled Lan Daoxing back, who was busy trying on armour: “General, he is my friend, the one that sneaked into Cengang and drew the map for me.”

Being able to sneak into Cengang and return unharmed is definitely not an ordinary person. Yu Dayou immediately turned his gaze towards Lan Daoxing.

“Is it presumptuous to ask what is your surname and first name?”

“I don’t dare to receive such respect, we’re all brothers, just call me Xiao Lan.” Lan Daoxing straightened the suit, then turned to ask Yu Dayou: “This time, I will be going with Lu Daren to Cengang, is it alright if I wear this?”

Yu Dayou was stunned for a moment, but then immediately replied: “Yes, of course!”

While the other soldiers were trying on the armour, Lu Yi called Wang Chonggu over and asked in a quiet voice: “This silver thread armour isn’t cheap, so where did General Yu get the money?”

Wang Chonggu hesitantly said: “This…. Lu Daren, don’t ask anymore, General Yu won’t let me say it either.”

Lu Yi continued to say respectfully: “As far as I know, the funds given are not enough to buy firearms. General Yu must have had a hard time arranging the funds to make sure everything is covered. Could this money come from an unknown source?”

“Don’t talk recklessly!” Wang Chonggu was shocked to death, “This money is very clean and we receive it with respect.”

Lu Yi looked at him without saying a word.

Wang Chonggu helplessly said: “Ever since you said you were going to bring people into Cengang, General Yu felt restless at the thought of this, to the point where he couldn’t sleep for several days. This money is the result of selling the sword inherited from his family. The sword has been passed down for generations and it’s the most valuable item in his family.”

Lu Yi was not expecting Yu Dayou to do this, so he was very touched and quickly asked: “Where did he sell his sword?”

“Please don’t ask me anymore, I’ve already said too much. General Yu has his own thoughts and ways of doing things. You can just admire and respect his actions, it will make his heart feel at peace.” Wang Chonggu was afraid Lu Yi would ask again, so he hastily raised his hand to salute, and then quickly walked toward the other soldiers to help them.

Inside the main tent, when Yu Dayou was watching the soldiers try on the armour, his face was filled with joy. Seeing that, Lu Yi felt a warmth in his heart, and thought to himself: Even if he has to detonate all ammunition or weaponry, he has to seize Cengang.

***

No moon or stars were seen in the sky. At this time, six Dafu ships sailed silently and slowly on the surface of the water towards the port of Cengang. Lu Yi was wearing a sharkskin shirt, leaning on the side of the ship that sailed towards Cengang. Behind him, dressed the same was Lan Daoxing.

The surface of the water did not reflect the moonlight, making it much easier to hide.

Wang Chonggu is in charge of these ships, and Yu Dayou will take the troops to Cengang using the mainland. In order to prevent getting attacked from both sides of Cengang while on water, they decided to stop outside of Cengang’s Waterland. Everyone held tightly to their weapons and stand in a prepared position, measuring the exact distance where they needed to be fired, then loaded their gun and patiently waited for orders.

Borrowing the hull to hide, Lu Yi, Lan Daoxing and the others dived into the water through the back of the boat. Everyone was wearing waterproof sharkskin armour and in their mouth was a 6-meter long bamboo, which was used for breathing.

Based on Wang Chonggu’s views, he knows that Lu Yi and the others are swimming, but he couldn’t see the bamboo stick rising above the water at all. It’s been a few days since the soldiers have fought, so the pirates in Cengage were very relaxed. The water was extremely calm, and the Dafu ships outside of Cengang started sailing in rows, without alerting the pirates.

Watching the wooden hourglass that was beside his hand, tiny drops of sand kept flowing and Wang Chonggu quietly waited.

In the calm depths of the sea, ten shadows silently approached the dock in Cengang…

When the last drop of sand touched the ground and the hourglass, Wang Chonggu tightly gripped the hourglass, in a low and deep voice said: “Fire!”

Each Dafu ship carried twenty long canons. Hundreds of cannons were launched all at once, shooting directly at the pirate ships, which were located near Cengang’s dock. Fiercely scorching in an instant, within the deep harbour of Cengang, a sea fire was seen.

The pirates inside the ship were too shocked to react, for a moment, they didn’t fight back at all and just frantically jumped off the ship and hid in the harbour.

In the dark, Lu Yi who was half-visible on the water had slowly entered Cengang. Hiding from plain sight, Lu Yi and the others climbed on land, took off their waterproof clothing and changed to their silver thread armour.

Originally the entrance to Cengang was a big road, but since the war, they have closed it off and opened a small road on the edge of the cliff instead, with strict guarding. The road has a zigzagging pattern, which makes it easy to defend but hard to attack.

Lu Yi walked in front, using body movement to the fullest, dangled from the edge of the cliff and moved forward, hearing no sound on the street, he slowly approached the entrance.

Thanks to the huge fire by the water, there’s only one guard left at the entrance, his eyes fixated on the burning ship. Lu Yi quietly sneaks up behind him, before the guard could react, his neck was twisted and unconsciously fell down to the ground.

From the entrance looking up, the road is small, steep and narrow. Between the cliff walls, there can be an echo, and the pirates talking above can be heard clearly from below.

From the sound of voices, there are approximately thirty pirates.

Lu Yi carefully took out a small dagger from his sleeves, then slowly walked up the narrow path, using his body skill, only slightly touching the surface of the water as he walked. As soon as he saw the pirates, the dagger flew toward them, and one of them was seen falling to the ground.

The remaining two pirates drew their swords and slashed forward, LuYi quickly spun once, lightly passing through the gap between the two of them. Effortlessly,  his hand lightly took over one of their swords, turning it towards the pirate’s neck. After that, as soon as the sword advanced a little more, fresh blood spurted out from the pirates’ neck, a large amount splashing onto the cliff edge wall.

Right before his eyes, he witnessed two of his comrades dying, before he could sweat, he quickly jumped forward with his sword and slashed nonstop. Just as he was about to hold the sword to steady his posture, he suddenly fell with his face down.

Lan Daoxing was quick enough to catch the falling pirate, and gently lay him down on the side. Lan Daoxing let out a sigh and said: “Amen, I hope you can reincarnate into a peaceful family in the next life – Don’t do any more blood or sword-related work.”

“Do you want me to perform a ritual for them?”

Lu Yi confiscated the gun on the pirates’ bodies, then threw it at the soldiers below, while stepping forward to the front road.

Lan Daoxing also received the gun, but he didn’t use it, instead turned around, handed it to the soldier beside him, and laughed lightly: “I was thinking of doing it, but unfortunately I didn’t bring the equipment for the ritual.”

Walking forward again, in the mountain cliff, there is a natural cave, not too big, which the pirates used as a place to pile everything, pulling everything needing repair from the ships, such as rattan shields, hooks, axes –numerous of them in piles. As a result of the damp cliff walls, these items began to rust and rot, emitting a strong smell of mildew.

Lu Yi led people to continue walking forward, aside from the sound of silence, there were sounds of winds and footsteps at the top of the mountain. It seemed that there are about twenty to thirty people simultaneously walking down. As soon as their eyes met, Lu Yi quickly ordered everyone to move back, and get into the cave. Fortunately, the cave was large enough to fit everyone, and large rattan shields could be used to cover the cave.

As they’re settling down to hide, they see a small group of pirates coming down from the mountain one by one, they are in a rush. It was clear that they’re trying to get to the burning ship as quickly as possible. As soon as the last person in their line passed by the cave, Lu Yi immediately signaled the others to jump put and kill them while they’re distracted.

After a few moves on these narrow and small mountain roads, Lu Yi and his men have successfully defeated all the pirates in sight. The soldiers who trained heavily for this day, now look like a hungry tiger. Only the slashing of knives, and blood spurting could be heard. In an instant, the path leading up the mountain was covered with dead bodies of pirates.

A knife struck the back of a pirate who was about to escape to report back. The pirate screamed and then fell down. When Lu Yi walked past him, took his knife, and put it back in his sleeves, then walked quickly up the trail.

After a short walk up the trail, they arrived at Cengang. In accordance with their original plan, they decided to separate into two teams. Lu Yi would lead some soldiers to blow up ammunition storage while Lan Daoxing would lead the rest of the soldiers to destroy all the weapons that the pirates were planning to use against the Ming soldiers. Lan Daoxing holds the firework tube that will signal Yu Dayou. As soon as the weapons are destroyed, Yu Dayou can direct his troops to attack at full strength.

“How about we have a race? If you blow up the ammunition storage before I light the fireworks signal, it means you win.” Lan Daoxing looked at Lu Yi with a laugh, “Dragon boat festival is coming, the loser will treat the other to Zongzi dumplings at Jiaxing restaurant.”

Lu Yi smiled slightly: “Good idea, deal!”

The two men separated, each one leading their own troops to do their job.

Lan Daoxing had snuck into Cengang once, so being here a second time makes things easier for him since he knows exactly where all the things are. In a short amount of time, he had found a line of weapons for defending the Ming soldiers.

The fire that broke out behind the mountain didn’t seem to have much effect on the pirates, because most of them seemed to be fine, moving swiftly without the slightest hint of panic, perhaps they’d guessed that the Ming soldiers would attack by the sea.

The Ming soldiers retreated from the battle for a few days, finally seeing some results, and not as many pirates were left on the defense line. Ships are on fire by the sea. It seems as though there are people on top of the mountain, as well as behind the mountain, observing the situation, but they haven’t decided to do anything, considering it is still the middle of the night. Even the pirates on guard decided to rest.

Lan Daoxing reached out to pat the shoulder of the pirate who was on guard, the pirate who was in the middle of a sleep suddenly raised his head, half-consciously looking at him.

“Sleepy huh?” Lan Daoxing asked attentively.

The pirate looked at him in confusion.

The pirate’s body immediately weakened. The soldiers behind Lan Daoxing grabbed the pirate and pushed him to the side. Lan Daoxing lightly signaled to the rest of the soldiers, who jumped in front of the pirates and killed them all. Afterwards, they threw down all the guns and spears, but the cannon could not be picked up, so they decided to blow it up.

The sound of the explosion was muffled, causing the whole land in Cengang to vibrate.

Mao Haifeng, who was about to go to the harbor to check the condition of the ship, stopped his movement, realizing that it was possible that the Ming soldiers were plotting a deceptive tactic in the East and attacking in the West, hastily put together a defensive line in front of the mountain.

The sky was dark, but a bright vibrant light was shining over Cengang, following a loud thunder sound.

At the bottom of the mountain, Yu Dayou also raised his head to look at the bright sky, his eyes filled with joy.

Seeing the signal being fired, knowing that Lan Daoxing had successfully completed his task, Lu Yi also let out a small sigh of relief, still clinging to the plan he had in his head for the ammunition storage.

This building is indeed very tightly guarded, more than eight pirates guarding outside. The burning ship situation at the sea wasn’t enough to lure them away from their spot.

“This should be an ammunition storage right?” Lu Yi inwardly guessed.

Lu Yi signaled his men to break into two groups. Then, they circled around the building, quieting surrounding it. Lu Yi picked up a few stones and lightly threw them around him. The guards quickly reacted to the sound and walked over to check, as they poked their head out, Lu Yi immediately pulled him in and in an instant, his cold body fell to the ground.

“What’s wrong?” The other guard asked, because he didn’t hear anything else.

Lu Yi, in a low voice, answered him in Japanese: “The ship is on fire. Everyone come and help immediately! Faster!”

The guards were stunned for a moment, a little doubtful, they all exchanged looks with each other in confusion. Two of them curiously walked toward Lu Yi’s spot, and found their dead friend.

The soldiers who had been quietly observing, suddenly launched a track. It was not a surprise that these pirates seemed to be much more trained than the others, but they weren’t strong enough to defeat Lu Yi’s troops. After Lu Yi knocked down most of them, he saw another pirate holding a firearm, he quickly threw his dagger to stop him from firing, his dagger hit the pirate’s left shoulder, and the firearm fell down with the bullet hitting the roof of the building.

Hearing the sound of gunfire and yelling, Mao Haifeng’s face immediately turned deathly pale….

His subordinates ran over to report: “Reporting, at the foot of the mountain the Ming troops have moved to attack, they are attacking fiercely. Unsure why, but the cannon on the mountains are blown up, the firearms, spear guns have all been lost. Most likely, there’s a spy on top of the mountain.”

Another subordinate came to report: “Reporting, from the small entrance to the harbor, found dozens of bodies of our brothers.”

Mao Haifeng’s fist slammed onto the table, immediately giving orders: “Quickly send the people to the front of the mountain, fire from the hideouts; take people to the ammunition storage, pull out the last two guns; The rest of the people, attack with all their might, the Ming have sneaked in, don’t let them near the ammunition storage!”
