Since he already said that, Yang ChengWan felt a bit uneasy to keep refusing and could only nod his head: “In that case, thank you Daren.”

It turned out that this special attention was an order from the Supreme Leader in JinYiWei. YangYue was a bit surprised.

Shen Mi saw that they had agreed, he looked at Yang ChengWan again and said: “In three days, it’s the day the insects are reproducing*. It symbolizes strength and prosperity. On that day, there will be a lot of positive energy, it will definitely help the progress of reconnecting the bones, you come again on that day.”

*[Insects are reproducing = indicating it will be the beginning of spring]

Reconnecting bones should also be on certain days? YangYue was a bit confused, as he was about to open his mouth to ask, the door blinds were opened and a servant walked in.

“Doctor, there are emergency cases: sword wounds and symptoms of poisoning.”

Shen Mi immediately walked out after hearing it.

As a constable, it was his duty to go take a look. Yang Yue turned to look at his father. Yang ChengWan nodded his head, whereas Lu Yi was already up on his feet and walking out.

Outside of the clinic, two people were injured: one had serious injuries and the other was half-fainted with a stomach wound; a cloth wrapped around his body was wet with blood. In addition his red face had begun to turn darker: it was obviously caused by poison.

Shen Mi opened the blood cloth, looked at the colouring of the wound and sniffed it. His eyebrows furrowed, then he called out for his assistant: “Bring yesterday’s antidote, as well as the honey gromwell root balm.”

The assistant moved at once.

The other person’s wound was lighter and the wound in his leg area was not caused by poison. Lu Yi began to interrogate him: “Who hurt you guys?”

“Japanese people.” One of the men answered, grimacing from the pain.

Japanese people! It turned out to be the Japanese Pirates!

YangYue was very surprised. In recent years, there had been news that the cities along the coast of Dongnan were robbed by pirates, but he didn’t think they would arrive there.

“How many people do they have?” Lu Yi asked in a low voice.

“They… There were many, maybe about ten people… or thirty… I do not know for sure, but I’m certain there were a lot and very cruel.”

“Where did you meet them? Did you report it to any officer?”

“At the sky monastery, which is located under the foot of Mount Mao at the outskirts of the city… We went there to deliver vegetables to the monks. As soon as we entered, we felt something was wrong.” That wounded person had not recovered from his fear, “The monks in the monastery… I don’t know if they’re still there or not.”

“But, did you report this to any officer?” Lu Yi asked again.

The injured man nodded his head.

Dozens of armed Japanese, they were not afraid to go against the police. YangYue thought that those pirates really had some guts. How dared they run all the way over here? There was a big hole in the protection of the zone, the General Inspector of the Jiangzhe area should be having a hard time taking the responsibility.

Lu Yi stopped asking questions, he walked out of the clinic and up to Gao Qing who was waiting outside. He said something to him. YangYue went back to Yang ChengWan’s side, in a low voice he reported the incident outside.

“I only thought that they were along the coast, I didn’t think they could come here.” Yang ChengWan sighed, he let YangYue support him up, “Since the doctor said we should come back in three days, now let’s go home.”

Lu Yi was indeed concerned. He let Cao Qing escort Yang ChengWan back to the post station whereas he himself went to the Justice Department to meet with Liu Xiangzuo to check on documents.

Later that afternoon, seeing that Lu Yi had not returned, Gao Qing wasn’t sure if there were anymore orders, but he did not dare to move, so he continued to wait at the post station.

While preparing his father’s dinner, seeing Gao Qing standing outside and holding his sword, YangYue greeted him, “Daren, if you don’t mind, please join us for dinner.”

Gao Qing arrogantly glanced at the vegetables and rice on the table in the inner room. That kind of food was served for lowly officers, in a very limited quantity. Furthermore the vegetables were really basic but made with great care, for example: the sweet-fried potato candies; every string of them shone under the candlelight and each thread was clearly visible. He hesitated for a moment, but then stepped inside and greeted Yang ChengWan, “Thank you for the offer.”

“Daren is too polite, please sit down.” Yang ChengWan laughed warmly.

YangYue provided Gao Qing with a bowl and chopsticks, laughed and said, “These are just normal snacks, hope you don’t mind, please enjoy.”

Yang ChengWan was about to start eating, then he looked at a sweet-fried potato candy and stopped, asking, “Did you leave some food for Jinxia?”

“Rice and vegetables had been put aside, warmed on the stove.” YangYue looked outside, it was almost dark, “At this hour, she must be hungry, she’ll be home soon.”

Just as he finished talking, someone entered the post station: it wasn’t Jinxia but Lu Yi.

Qao Qing quickly put down his chopsticks, stood up and greeted, “Daren!”

Yang ChengWan was also about to get up, but Lu Yi signaled him to stay.

Seeing everyone enjoy dinner with only three side dishes, Lu Yi’s eyes swept through the room, then asked: “Is constable Yuan not back yet?”

“She should be soon.” YangYue replied. Afraid that Lu Yi wouldn’t believe him, he added, “She can’t stand hunger, and won’t spend any money. Sure thing she will come home for dinner.”

Lu Yi scowled, he hadn’t said anything yet. At that moment, from behind him, they heard the sound of someone rushing into the room.

“Finally, just in time.” cried Jinxia. Even though her breathing was heavy, her tone sounded happy. While laughing, she said, “Hurry up! Hurry! I was afraid of being late and missing the chance to enjoy Da Yang’s cooking… Master, how’s your leg? What did the doctor say?”

Yang ChengWan did not answer, YangYue looked at her, signalling her with his eyes to look to the side.

Jinxia turned her head, immediately meeting Lu Yi’s eyes. She was stunned for a moment but then went back to her smiling face, “Daren, it’s good that you’re here.”

“What have you found on Zhou Xian’s lover?” Lu Yi asked.

“I investigated some parts… The house raised two large dogs that were brought from the West, they are Tibetan Mastiff or often called Tibetan Monk. Daren, you may not know this, but their appearance was like the one of a bear, their fur was long, their teeth  sharp…” Jinxia said while moving her body, “The dogs bursted out of the door…”

Lu Yi interrupted, “Talk about the woman.”

“Her surname is Zhai, her first name is Lanye… Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to meet her, they said she was out of town.” Jinxia reported in full. “But I also got other news…”

Lu Yi raised his eyebrows, his tone was unsatisfied, “You’ve been investigating all day, but you haven’t met the person?”

“Daren, don’t be mad, listen to me first, I met someone else.” Jinxia looked at him with expectation. “Daren, guess who? I’m warning Daren beforehand, this is an extremely happy news for you.”

Finishing those words, she herself was so delighted to smile brightly from start to end, while Lu Yi’s face did not change. Their expressions complemented each other, it was very pleasant to look at.

“Ahem, ahem.” Yang ChengWan frantically cleared his throat, reminding Jinxia, “Quickly give Daren the report, it’s inappropriate to make Daren guess.”

“Oh… okay, then I’ll tell you.”

A truly sincere Jinxia walked up to Lu Yi, she walked forward to him, but then took a step back at the last moment.

“Lu Daren, today I met your grandfather!”

After she said that, the whole room became silent, let alone Lu Yi, even YangYue, Gao Qing and the others could not make a sound.

“It is because you’re so happy that you’re speechless?” Jinxia looked at Lu Yi and was pleased with herself. “You didn’t think it would be this, right?”

Even though he had dealt with hurricanes and typhoons, this… Lu Yi took a deep breath first, then said, “My grandfather passed away twenty years ago, you wouldn’t be able to meet him.”

“Not my biological grandfather, but cousin grandfather.” Jinxia corrected him.

Lu Yi could only look at her. He didn’t understand if it was because she didn’t have anything else to say or because there was nothing to say.

“Cousin grandfather?” YangYue approached her and said in surprise, “What exactly is going on? No close relationship?”

“Close, really close, he can practically be called family.” Jinxia began to explain in detail to Lu Yi. “I have helped you ask in detail. The relationship is like this: this man and your grandfather were separated by several layers of male cousins…”

“Cousin, separated by several cousins?!?” Gao Qing said suspiciously, “That means he’s out of the family tree.”

Jinxia glared at him for a moment then continued, “Your grandfather and he are…”

“Siblings?” YangYue guessed.

“Still cousins.” Jinxia continued, “His grandfather and your grandfather’s grandfather are…”

“Siblings?” Gao Qing couldn’t help it.

Jinxia didn’t care about him and excitedly said: “The same person! Do you understand now?”

YangYue was sitting next to her, counting with his fingers: “Grandfather’s grandfather’s grandfather must be from the generation of the Song Dynasty, right? Out of the eight within the family tree?”

Lu Yi had been standing all day… He took another deep breath and finally said, “Thank you for telling me this news, I thank you… on behalf of my whole family, thank you.”

“Daren, no need for courtesy!” Jinxia waved her hand, gesturing with humbleness, “Beizhe is happy to do this, even though your grandfather is a beggar, he’s a very nice guy, he seems very close…”

Without waiting for her to finish her words, Lu Yi, with a blank face, turned and walked out, saying something in his mouth in a soft voice.

Jinxia was a bit bewildered, she looked at YangYue and asked, “What did he say?”

YangYue also didn’t hear it clearly.

“He said,” intervened Gao Qing, whose hearing was sharper and had heard it with clarity, “Your grandfather!”

“How can it be my grandfather? He’s clearly his grandfather.” Jinxia realized. “Why is he scolding people anyway? Is it because he’s too thrilled so he’s saying nonsense?”

Gao Qing looked at her helplessly, and then followed Lu Yi in a hurry.

“All of a sudden, a beggar grandfather appeared, no one feels excited about who he is, especially with a status like Lu Daren’s” YangYue shook his head, and he immediately sat her down for dinner, “Master Xia, you better stop talking about it.”

“According to the people, the Emperor has three poor relatives, and one of them is a beggar, what’s so strange about it?” Jinxia was displeased, but seeing Yang ChengWan’s glare, she changed the subject, “Master, are your legs healed?”

“You think we went to see gods? The doctor said that father’s leg bones were not properly connected, therefore, they must be broken up again and then reconnected. Afterward, he must take at least three months of rest.” YangYue helped his father explain.

“Break it then reconnect it?!?”

Just hearing it made her feel sick and Jinxia grimaced.

“There’s no need to talk about it,” Yang ChengWan asked, “Xia’er, you really didn’t meet with Zhai Lanye?”

“Yes, I heard that after the Zhou Xian’s incident, she’s no longer living in that residence, but thanks to Lu Daren’s grandfather – these beggars are very quick in their information – I discovered she has moved not far from there. He said that she’s moved to the edge of the lake. On normal days, the Zhai landlord would take her around in a boat to look for a son-in-law with money and rank.”

“Rich son-in-law?”

“Zhai Lanye is the adopted daughter of the Zhai landlord, if anyone wants to take her to be a concubine, they must pay fifteen thousand taels of silver.”

Hearing that, Yang ChengWan understood: “A thin horse of Yangzhou.”

YangYue was a little confused. Jinxia smiled and poked him, “When we finish eating, let’s go take a look around the lake.”
