The moonlight was shining brightly and the stars were scattering here and there. Lu Yi, under the candlelight, examined all the documents that were brought from home. Aside from documents from the Zhou Xian’s case, there were also the ones related to the Wu’An Gang:  information about the leaders, the location of the headquarters, and others.

Gao Qing was in front of Lu Yi’s room, ready to take orders anytime.

In front of the courtyard, outside the crescent door, there was someone stuck there as if they wanted something. Gao Qing looked at the figure cautiously, his hand instinctively pressing down on the edge of his sword. He exclaimed: “Who?!”

“Don’t panic, don’t panic, it’s me.” Jinxia with a smiley face entered through the crescent door. Her steps were light, whilst one of her hands was pointing at the room. She lowered her voice and asked him, “Did Lu Daren have his dinner yet? How’s his mood?”

Without answering her words, Gao Qing asked harshly, “What are you doing here?”

“Well… There’s a lack of funds for this investigation. Da Yang and I have rather limited financial resources, Liu Daren is still not home, so I wanted to ask if Lu Daren could provide some silver ahead first…” Jinxia said with a face full of smiles.

Gao Qing looked at her with a little disbelief. He was surprised how the Liu Shanmen Department had been able to educate someone with such a thick and shameless face like her. “At this time of the night… you’re here to ask for money?”

“There’s no other way to do it, I’m doing it for the sake of this investigation, the cost of renting a boat is not cheap.” Jinxia explained.

At this moment, the door creaked, opening from the inside. Lu Yi, who was half wrapped in an outer robe, came out from his room and furrowed his eyebrows at Jinxia: “What do you want to rent a boar for?”

“It’s like this, Daren…”

The smile on her face was becoming sore, but because she was determined to ask for funds, Jinxia insisted on maintaining a cherry mood explaining her reasons to Lu Yi.

After listening to it, Lu Yi thought about it for a moment, then instructed Gao Qing: “Tomorrow, I want to cruise on the lake. Arrange a scented boat for me and spread the word about this. You surely understand what to do right?”

Gao Qing was stunned for a moment, then replied: “Beizhe understands.”

“You can go.”

“Beizhe will leave first.”

Jinxia, who was being ignored, was standing beside him. She looked at Lu Yi in confusion. Suddenly she understood and said with satisfaction, “A good bait is fishing for the legendary golden turtle.”

“Tomorrow you will be disguised as a maid lady while YangYue as a servant. “ Lu Yi gave the order while looking at Jinxia: “Hopefully, your information is right, don’t let my efforts go to waste.”

“It can’t be wrong, this information was given by your grandfather…”

Before she finished her words, Lu Yi slammed the door in her face.

Not feeling discouraged, Jinxia walked closer to the gap of the door, raised her voice, and sincerely said: “Your grandfather is very nice, would you like me to take you to meet him some time?”

This time, even the lights in the room went out.

Jinxia rubbed her nose and, seeing the situation, she turned around and exited.

Today was another rainy day, and the lake was covered with fog. In the midst of the drizzling rain, a shadow of a boat appeared in the distance.

The people on  fragrant boats were more sweet-smelling than flowers, wines or grapes. Their scent was so intoxicating that some would get drunk on them.

Jinxia was wearing a set of maid outfits, disguising herself as a maid servant. On both sides of her head she had combed her hair into braids, then rolled them into a small bun, making her face look more attractive. At this moment, her hands were folded behind the sleeves of her robe and she was politely standing by the window in front of the boat cabin, her eyes rolling left and right.

YangYue was next to her, disguised as a servant, with a red velvet cap, a green inner robe and a red outer robe. Jinxia praised him in a loud voice straight away, saying the attire really suited him.

Gao Qing, as a JinYiWei commander, was not afraid of some drizzle. He was standing in front of the stern of the boat, his head and chest were sturdy like a spear, his beautiful brocade cloth flew because of the wind, his serious and cold face seemed as if he was ready to risk his life chasing an enemy horse carriage anytime.

“Pour the wine.” A light voice was heard.

Hearing that voice, Jinxia rushed forward, she lifted the copper teapot filled with warm wine and poured it into a black-red porcelain cup with caution, filling the cup in full without spilling a single drop of liquid.

“Daren, please enjoy.” Her tone was gentle, friendly, respectful and humble, her voice was low and her pronunciation was soft, she was naturally playing her role as a maid. Feeling quite satisfied with her abilities,  on her face it appeared that she was very proud of herself: “Daren, in your judgement, my appearance is quite good, right?”

Lu Yi, whilst holding his cup, slowly glanced at her: “Foggy rain, a small boat, a rare wine, a beautiful maidservant. I’ll agree to the first three things but the last…” He didn’t get to finish his words.

“Beizhe’s beauty is indeed quite lacking,” Jinxia almost choked, saying it with clear dissatisfaction, “but for the sake of this investigation, Daren, could you be a little bit more tolerant?”

The top of his lips curved up slightly and he uttered the words, “All right, I will use what I have.”

The wind that brought drizzling rain, dripped on the outside of the window making rustling sounds.

Jinxia frowned a little when she heard the sounds. In a low voice, she whispered in YangYue’s ear: “It’s raining like this, can it be that Zhai Lanye might not go out on the lake today?”

YangYue didn’t get to answer her question. Near their boat, together with the sound of waves crashing, they heard the sound of a ship approaching…

Gao Qing, who was at the front, went in to report: “Daren, there is a ship approaching, there’s a Wu’An Gang’s flag on it.”

Wu’An Gang!

Jinxia immediately looked at YangYue. Due to the explosions at the provincial court, she deliberately went to Wu’An Gang headquarters after finishing work, but their servants said the young master was accompanying the old master to pray at the monastery outside the city. She also went to the port dock to look for Shangguan Xi, but seeing JinYiWei at the port, they didn’t meet either.

Still wondering who was on the ship, they heard a loud voice shouting, coming from the inside of the watercraft, “Wu An Gang, Shangguan Bangzhu wants to meet Lu Daren.”

Gao Qing raised his eyebrows: “Daren, they are Kangouw people. If you don’t want to meet them, I’ll go answer them for you.”

Lu Yi didn’t look surprised. He nodded his head to Gao Qing: “No problem! Shangguan Bangzhu and I have met before. I also intended to meet with her again to talk; invite her here.”

“Yes.”

Gao Qing turned around and walked out.

Unexpectedly, it was Shangguan Xi. Why would she want to meet with Lu Yi? Jinxia, full of doubts, couldn’t help but ask, “Daren, aren’t you going to meet with Zhai Lanye?”

“No hurry, they all are beautiful women, why not add one more?”

Lu Yi tilted his head in reply to her.

This answer was indeed a little shameless, the corner of Jinxia’s mouth twitched and she did not say anything else.

The boat swayed slightly. Bounded by the curtain, a slim figure jumped with agility on the boat. Gao Qing politely escorted her inside… The Shangguan Xi today was a bit different from when they had met at the dock. She was wearing a fluttering wide purple tunic hit by rain drops, the curves of her waist had been made clear, lowering the impression of an intelligent and sharp gang leader and adding more to the feeling of a soft and beautiful woman.

Jinxia kept looking at her, hoping for a little eye contact between them, or at least an understanding of her intentions for being here, but Shangguan Xi never looked at her from the beginning to the end and not even in YangYue’s direction.

Lu Yi stood up and greeted her, laughing. He said: “Shangguan Bangzhu, I did not expect that we would meet again so soon.”

Shangguan Xi was also very polite, and said: “This light rain on the lake, I also wanted to experience it.”

“Yangzhou is a great place, even fog and rain can become poetry. If we were in the Capital, cold rain wouldn’t make people want to go around.” Lu Yi invited her into the room.

The decoration inside the room, compared to the outside, was much more luxurious: everything was perfectly arranged; the charcoal inside the bamboo cage heater had been turned on from the start, making the indoor room much warmer and more comfortable. Jinxia, lowering her eyes while carrying the teapot, poured tea for two people, then filled the lily deodorizer in the heating bamboo cage. She put it in too much by accident and it made her sneeze because of the rising smoke.

Lu Yi, seeing her walking back and forth, impatiently said: “Enough, you go out and close the doors.”

Leave? Even close the door? Jinxia was stunned and looked at Lu Yi. She lowered her eyes and said in a low tone: “Special guests are here, how about I stay? It’s easier to pour tea and provide services.”

Lu Yi frowned a little but didn’t get to speak. Instead Shangguan Xi laughed and said: “Men and women in the world of Kangouw don’t care about such things.”

“You heard it, go out!” Lu Yi ordered Jinxia with a deep voice.

There was no other way, Jinxia had to leave.

“Close the door!” Another voice came from inside.

She closed the door lightly, but left a small gap. Putting her eyes close to the door gap, and saw Lu Yi staring at the gap without blinking.

Unwilling, she was forced to close the door tight, signaling to YangYue. YangYue understood the gesture and took two porcelain cups from the table, throwing one at her. Both of them crouched next to the door, holding their breath and trying to listen to the movements in the room.

“How can you two…” Gao Qing extended his hand, breaking them apart.

“Shhh!” Jinxia hurriedly gave a signal to be quiet and she whispered: “Inside, there is the leader of Wu’An Gang, Shangguan Bangzhu. Aren’t you worried about Lu Daren’s safety? What would you do if something happens?”

Gao Qing couldn’t say that he was not worried, but that method seemed a bit inappropriate. While he was hesitating, Jinxia and YangYue had already started listening on the door.

At that moment, from inside the room, Lu Yi’s voice shouted, “Gao Qing, when both of them violate the rules, you help me throw them into the lake as a bait for fishes and shrimps.”

“Beizhe understands!”

Gao Qing answered in a deep voice, his sharp eyes glaring at the two of them.

Jinxia and YangYue also responded in an instant, laughing and walking backwards a few steps, then putting the porcelain cups back on the table.

“I’ve been looking at Wu’An Gang’s activities over the past few years, at least on the surface they seem clean enough. Your contribution as a leader cannot be ignored.” Lu Yi said lightly while sipping his tea.

Shangguan Xi smiled, “Indeed, from the beginning our business has been a legal one.”

“However, as far as I know, you are also receiving salt collection… The underground banks in Jiangnin, Yangzhou and Changzhou don’t seem to be too clean.”

“I’m afraid there is some misunderstanding. Wu’An Gang helped a lot of families, it’s normal to attract some jealousy and start rumours that will make things difficult for us.” Shangguan Xi smiled at Lu Yi, and said, “Daren just came to Yangzhou region, don’t listen to the words of others. We’ve been loyal to the Palace, it is impossible for us to violate the law.”

“Problems like this, as long as no one investigates, then everything remains calm…” Lu Yi said warmly, then  he seemed to remember something, “Oh, yes, there is a thing I want to return to its owner.” He took out a small bag from his waist, then poured it on the table. A perfect round and glossy pearl half-hanged from a silver thread. Shangguan Xi did not take it, her expression did not change but her eyes sharpened for a moment.

“Young Master Bangzhu’s martial arts are quite good, unfortunately he’s a short-tempered one. You and he were educated in the same place, your feelings are well-connected and sincere, this I can understand.” Lu Yi said, articulating word by word. “But blowing up a provincial court is a bit too much.”

Shangguan Xi’s eyes were dull. She said: “Daren, I don’t understand what you’re saying.”

“If you really don’t understand, I’d better find your Young Master Bangzhu to discuss.”

Lu Yi did not force her but stood up, ready to walk away.

Shangguan Xi’s back immediately tensed up. A moment later, she stood up and extended her hand toward Lu Yi’s back. She was about to hit his shoulder, frantically saying, “Not so fast!”

After hearing the movements behind him, Lu Yi tilted his body and avoided her, his jade decoration following the swaying of his robe. He then twisted around and grabbed Shangguan Xi’s wrist, that she turned and broke free… In a small room, those two people were attacking each other, exchanging fists and punches. Since Lu Yi had decided to have a taste of her martial art skills, he did not release all of his strength, but he provoked Shangguan Xi to throw out her moves on purpose, one by one.

After exchanging several moves, Shangguan Xi knew that she was no match for him, but couldn’t escape either.

“This simple fist style is indeed very elegant… Unfortunately, because you’re a Bangzhu, there’s too much on your mind and this red cloth green bird move is not fast enough.” As soon as Lu Yi turned his right hand, impressively the green cloth of the red bird came out, twisting her fist in front of his eyes like a peacock, then punching his hand towards Shangguan Xi’s forehead.

The fist movements were rapid like the wind. Shangguan Xi no longer had the time to dodge, therefore she crashed into the table and the teacups were knocked on the ground.

One of Lu Yi’s hands was aiming to touch her forehead with extreme precision, while the other hand caught her slim waist in time, preventing her from falling to the ground.
