Lu Yi didn’t seem to notice them, his hand was carrying a cup of tea, while he was enjoying the view of the river and slowly blowing away the steam of his teacup: the fragrance blended in with the air, his handsome face was half shown and half covered by the steam.

According to Jinxia’s mind, if Lu Yi didn’t see them, and her status wasn’t high enough to just pay respects, it seemed that the best alternative would be to stay away. Not sure if Lu Yi still remembered that night at Xinfeng bridge, or if he recognized them and remembered the two taels, it would be difficult to say that he had a good impression of her; if he was petty, he might purposely give them trouble.

YangYue only hesitated for a moment then he immediately remembered the applicable manners between subordinate, senior and junior superiors; in order not to be considered impolite, he immediately walked toward Lu Yi and introduced himself: “LiuShanmen YangYue greets Lu Daren.”

Jinxia did not have the chance to pull him back, so she also had to greet him: “LiuShanmen Yuan Jinxia greets Lu Daren.”

Lu Yi raised his eyes, let out an ‘uhm’ with a plain face.

At such a close distance, Jinxia saw that he hadn’t had a change in expression, she thought that he didn’t recognize her, and secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

“Where is Yang Superior, Yang ChengWan?” Lu Yi asked.

“My dad’s leg condition is not good, he is resting in his room.” YangYue answered.

Lu Yi raised his hand and pointed in the direction of the cabin, signaling YangYue to lead the way. The hand carrying the tea cup was placed in front of Jinxia.

Maybe the movement was so smooth that Jinxia automatically took the cup from his hand without thinking.

YangYue brought Lu Yi to Yang ChengWang’s room.

Jinxia had been staring blankly at the tea cup in her hand for only a moment before asking herself how come that, in an instant, a constable had been turned into a servant. She quickly followed their footsteps, feeling surprised and thinking, “Why did he not go see Liu Xiangzuo but asked to meet with master Yang first?”

After walking to the front door of Yang ChengWan’s room, YangYue knocked on the door and said: “Father, Lu Jingli, Lu Daren has come.”

Inside there was no sound, nor there was any answer.

“My father is old, he has  hearing difficulties, maybe he didn’t hear us…” YangYue quickly explained to Lu Yi, “Lu Daren, please don’t mind it, you can go back to your cabin first, then when he wakes up I will tell him.”

Lu Yi did not answer, he displayed a cold face, and stood silently by the door, showing no sign of leaving.

“Lu Daren…”

Jinxia worried that JinYiWei’s Lu Daren was trying to be difficult with Yang ChengWan, she was planning to help calm him. She was about to open her mouth but the door of Yan ChengWang’s room opened. Yang ChengWan was wearing his coat standing by the door: “Lu Daren, Head Yang ChengWan, please forgive me for the lack of manners.”

“Senior, don’t be too formal.” Lu Yi speaked in a friendly tone.

Yang ChengWan laughed softly, he walked inside and invited Lu Yi inside his room.

YangYue and Jinxia, of course came in as well. Lu Yi sat down and was ready to talk to Chengwan. YangYue and Jinxia stood by the right and left side of the door like  guardian gods watching over them, their expression unchanged and speechless.

“You two, go out.” Yang ChengWan said to the left and right.

YangYue and Jinxia did not dare to disobey and they slowly walked out and closed the door.

“Senior Yang…” Lu Yi opened his mouth.

“Lu Daren, wait a minute.”

Yang ChengWan approached the door, and as soon as he pulled the door open, he discovered Jinxia and YangYue holding a small leather-covered device that was attached to the door with which they were trying to listen. They almost fell into the room when the door was opened. After the hearing device was confiscated, Yang ChengWan glared at the two of them: “Before dark, everything about this ship, including passengers and workers, I want you both to memorize it well.”

“Father…”

“Master…”

Both of them wailed at the same time.

“I will check anytime.” Yang ChengWan quickly said, then closed the door, turned and smiled at Lu Yi, “My son and my student are very naughty, surely you will laugh at me.”

At this time Lu Yi laughed: “My father once said, in the past, among JinYiWei, there was no one who could match your expertise in investigating, now there is the successor, this is counted as a good thing.”

*[He’s talking about YangYue and Jinxia if anyone is confused, TN].

Yang ChengWan did not comment on his statement, only asked: “Your father, is he well?”

“Well, he still has an old disease, feeling tired and having pain in the solar plexus.” Lu Yi calmly observed Yang ChengWan, “I often urge him to rest, but he does not listen. In his spare time he would think about the past events. Father often talks about you, in his heart, he really hopes you can come back and help him.”

“I’m thankful that he still remembers a pair of old bones [Indicating himself too old].” Yang ChengWan slowly laughed.

“My father told me to convey his words to you” Lu Yi watched him closely, “the dead are dead.”

Hearing this, Yang ChengWan sat in silence and after a while he slowly said: “In the past, I also knew a JinYiWei’s Jingli, level seven, in the position as Lu Daren now, his surname was Shen.”

Lu Yi stayed quiet. This Shen person, a level seven JinYiWei’s Jingli, Lu Yi knew him.

Shen Lian, or also called Zi Chun, was from Jiangxi Province in Huiji District. He was the best graduate in the 17th year of Jiajing’s  reign, after which he became JinYiWei’s Jingli. His honest nature and courageous opinions helped him reveal one out of the ten crimes committed by Yan Song. The event of “Changing the Biao Gang” was a tragedy that caused the civilians to lose property and many of them also died. Shen Lian reported what he witnessed: as a result, Shen Lian was sentenced to be beaten with wood, exiled to the north fort of the great wall of Juyongguan, and then he was killed in Xuanfu. His son Chen Gun, Chen Bao, was taken to prison and beaten to death.

Yang ChengWan smiled bitterly: “At that time, your father, even though he was the supreme commander in JinYiWei, he treated me and Shen Lian very well; we acted towards each other like brothers. I really appreciate his concern and I owe him a lot of gratitude in this lifetime, I certainly could not pay him back. I, Yang ChengWan, who is no longer useful and ended up being handicapped, can only be in Shanmen throughout the days; I’m no longer the person he knew. I’m no longer what he imagined.”

The person in front of Lu Yi was only about forty-years-old, but the hair on his head was half white and he also looked tired, compared to the description his father gave of him and of the JinYiWei Jingli who always solved cases differently. Was this just an external appearance or was he really withering? Lu Yi looked at him carefully for a few moments, only able to say: “This matter is not urgent, senior does not need to immediately make a decision. This trip to Yangzhou this time, I’m still young and still has to rely a lot on your guidance.”

“Lu Daren is too polite, I’m not worthy of your praise.” Yang ChengWan said quickly. Lu Yi didn’t say much afterward, stood up, said goodbye and walked out.

When Yang Chengwan was left alone in his room, he sat back in his chair and continued looking at the tea cup in front of him, his eyes restless.

The ship anchored at night. Throughout the night nothing happened, until in the early hours of the morning when the sky was foggy, suddenly some noise could be heard.

Jinxia was sleeping unconsciously, when she heard a loud banging on the door, and thought there was a big problem, therefore she quickly wore her robe and opened the door. As soon as the door opened, two guards wearing black-clothed caps, with dark robes and a yellow war skirt, burst in, didn’t say much, then they immediately started to flip and unpack everything, scattered in all directions. At last they found nothing and finally turned to Jinxia.

“Search her body!” one of them said.

“Wait a minute!” These people were very rude, and Jinxia was extremely annoyed, “We are all people in the government, that you threw all of my things I don’t mind, now based on what reasons do you need to search my body?!”

“Don’t think you’re bold, you are just a lowly constable, don’t talk like that!” A tall guard said in a rude and harsh manner, “What is missing are the loads of presents containing congratulatory gifts from General Qiu for his mother’s birthday, don’t talk about searching you, even if I have to take your life, I will.”

It turned out that this was the subordinate of Qiu Luan, not surprisingly so arrogant, Jinxia looked at him coldly: “Even though your General is being favored by the Emperor, I, Master Xia advise you with one sentence: in the government looking up at the head is difficult to meet, bowing the head is easy to meet [idiom], don’t take everything too far!”

This tall guard ignored her words and continued to advance forward to search her body. Jinxia quickly took two steps back, kicking her legs out, directly at the target and making the guard bend backwards.

“Do you think this master is easy to bully? Huh!”

“This little girl,” the tall guard and his men stood against the wall and pulled out their waist swords, then said in a desperate tone, “I’ll kill you!”

Jinxia coldly saw the sword flying toward to attack and without avoiding it, she waited for the sword to reach close to her eye then slanted her head, and the sword pierced through the center of the doorway.

“Huh! I have long heard how great General Qiu led his army to war, reported of victory everywhere, even though he only killed five Mongolians but dared to record himself in a promotion book, no wonder it is said ‘An incompetent soldier is useless, an incompetent general makes everyone useless’. This saying is really appropriate.”

Jinxia laughed scornfully.

The two guards became very angry, they were ready to kill. When YangYue arrived, seeing Jinxia in good condition, he let out a sigh of relief and quickly tried to change the atmosphere: “We are all government officers serving the country, let’s calm down and try to talk nicely to each other.”

YangYue quickly pulled Jinxia to the side, whispering in her ear: “These aren’t people that we can easily provoke, don’t add more to the problem, instead reduce it. Father is waiting for you on the deck.”

Jinxia was dragged to the deck by YangYue, where there were dozens of torches, brightly illuminating the ship like morning: it was filled with people, not only the crew had been forced out, even Yang ChengWan, Li Xiangzuo and Lu Yi were there too. A man stood wearing an iron helmet with pointed red tassel, an armor uniform with like a sheet of fish scales whose length reached to the waist and the ends were feathered: his appearance should have been amazing, but this person looked like he had been struck by a major disaster and his expression was limp with his head drooping. Next to him was a banner-carrying officer and behind there were many guards.

“Master.” Jinxia advanced forward Yang ChengWan, with a feeling of anger suppressing her voice, “This group of people is very arrogant.”

Two guards and the officer also rushed to the deck, pointing toward Jinxia, and angrily walked up to him: “This little girl did not let us search her, instead she beat us and bad-mouthed the general, she must have been…”

“Nonsense! You unpacked and turned everything upside down in the room, nevermind that, you still wanted to search me, master Xia’s body? It’s not that easy, if you try to touch me, I’ll bend your hands!” Jinxia loudly shouted back.

“Body search?” Yang ChengWan was surprised to hear that, “Canjiang [a position lower than the great general] Daren, you said there were about seven to eight large chests of birthday items, how could they have been hidden in my student’s body?”

Wang Fangxing, a general under Qiu Luan, witnessing that his men were out of control, especially in front of JinYiWei Jingli and the Assistant Minister of Left of the Judicial Review Department, suddenly felt shameful and violently slapped one of his guard: “You useless fool! Get lost!”

On this ship, Liu Xiangzuo was the highest ranking official, an honest person with a calm temper, he knew they were General Qiu’s people and that he should be given a little face [being respectful]. He had been awakened at dawn but he was not angry, so he calmly said, “Wang Canjiang, I still have official duties waiting, if the investigation is over, I will go back to rest.”

Wang Fangxing hurriedly said: “I’m incompetent for carelessly letting my subordinates disturb Daren, I’m begging Daren for forgiveness, tomorrow I will make sure to visit to apologize.”

“Small matters, small matters, don’t need to think too much about it.”

Liu Xiangzuo walked back to his room, his shadow quickly disappearing..

“Lu Jingli…”

Wang Fangxin turned to Lu Yi and was about to speak, instead he heard Lu Yi coldly say: “Wang Daren, when did the birthday chests disappear?”

“One hour after the choushi time [between 1-3am], because one hour before choushi time, it was time to replace the guards and the chests were still there.” Wang Fangxing immediately answered him.

When they were talking, Jinxia was feeling tired and kept yawning, so she leaned on YangYue’s body and was ready to go back to sleep. She did not have a good impression of Great General Qiu Luan, the birthday gifts were missing, but instead she just wanted to applaud happily.

“Chief Yang,” Lu Yi turned around to face Yang ChengWan, “It’s better to go to the crime scene and use your tracking techniques, perhaps you can find some clues which can help Wang Canjiang to find the missing chests.”

“Here, please forgive me, Daren.” Yang ChengWan quickly said, “You definitely don’t want to delay this matter, at night time, my eyes tend to see things as double, I’m not very useful.”

Wang Fangxing noticed that Yang ChengWan’s body was leaning on one side, he was limping, he didn’t agree with Lu Yi’s suggestion, but didn’t want to refuse.

“Then…” Lu Yi looked at him and thought for a moment, turned his body and said: “then let your students go and see.”

After hearing him said that, Yang ChengWan no longer refused, he turned to look at Jinxia and YangYue and gave the order: “The two of you get on the boat, be careful…”

“Master, when have I ever not been careful?” Jinxia surprisingly said.

Yang ChengWan looked at her for a moment and said: “The contents of the birthday gifts chests are extraordinary, you two pay attention carefully, do not carelessly speak, do you understand me or not?”

Jinxia was stunned for a moment, did not understand the meaning, but still nodded her head in confusion.

However, both father and son felt that this case was displaying some strange problems. YangYue looked at his father for a while then followed Jinxia, boarding the ship next door.
