When Jinxia returned to Lu Yi’s room, she was carrying a wooden tray with a bowl of porridge and two side dishes.

“Daren, get up and eat a little.” She put the tray on the table, looked at him and said, “Daren, eat first, I will go to the town and ask for a horse carriage to pick Daren up.”

Lu Yi was originally already down, seeing her sad expression, he couldn’t help but ask, “Why? Did someone scold you?”

“No…” Jinxia hesitated for a moment, then said honestly, “Mrs. Shen is going to leave, maybe in a few days.”

Lu Yi understood the situation right away, “Because of us?”

Jinxia nodded, then looked at him, “She usually lives here alone, it was peaceful and quiet. Now that we’re here, and we’re also from the official family, she… Of course, I won’t go investigating her background. Daren, you won’t either, will you?”

For a moment, Lu Yi couldn’t make up his mind, then he said in a deep voice, “I might check it out.”

“You…” Jinxia sighed, irritated, “No wonder she insisted on leaving here, my uncle felt so sorry that he almost buried his head in the ground.”

“Even if she leaves, I will still check her background.” Lu Yi said slowly.

“Daren, you! Why do you have to do that?” Jinxia was a little angry, “Either way, she saved your life, you should treat her as your saviour.”

“It’s because of that reason that I have to investigate, so if later she encounters difficulties, I’ll put my power to use and help her.” Lu Yi said.

Hearing this, Jinxia was stunned, “…You’re right.” As she spoke, it seemed she thought of something. She took out her wallet and reached into it, inside there were only four to five coins… She became irritated and tightened her eyebrows.

Seeing that she was so poor, Lu Yi’s mood suddenly was lifted up. He joked and said, “You want to use this much coins to rent a carriage?”

“Horse carriages are arranged by the post station, no need to pay.” Jinxia counted each coin carefully, “Along the way, Mrs. Shen will definitely need money, I think I will…”

“You have only this much coin and yet you want to give it away?” Lu Yi snorted.

Jinxia got upset, “If I knew it sooner, I would’ve brought more…”

“I have.” Lu Yi motioned her to check his outer robe, his tone slightly blaming her, “Only carrying a few coins on yourself, what if there’s an emergency? It’s not even enough for one meal.”

Being scolded to the point she couldn’t speak, Jinxia could only agree to be ashamed and pass him his outer robe.

Lu Yi took out several bills. After examining them, he took one of the bill and handed it to Jinxia, then said, “Give this to Mrs. Shen.”

The number on the bill stunned Jinxia for a while. She did not forget to compliment him either, “Daren, you are too generous! It would be nice if there was money…” She muttered the words as she walked out the room.

Lu Yi didn’t know how Jinxia got Mrs. Shen to accept the money bill, but her face was full of smiles when she came back to the room. It seemed that wanting to reject her was something not easy to do.

Feeling that he could walk without any struggle, Lu Yi didn’t allow Jinxia to rent a horse carriage anymore. He just got up and put on his outer robe. After eating a bowl of porridge, they bid their farewell to Mrs. Shen and the beggar uncle, walking out of the forest together.

Mrs. Shen’s place was located on the outskirts of the city, therefore there was a long way to walk back. On regular days, walking back would be no problem, but right now Jinxia was worried because Lu Yi was currently recovering from his injury, and he hadn’t regained his strength in full. What if he suddenly falls down while walking? She had proposed several times to go rent a horse carriage and ride him back, but Lu Yi had always refused them all.

He wanted to keep walking slowly.

After a while, as soon as the city gates became visible, Jinxia was just now remembering something: Zhai Lanye’s death, did she have to tell YangYue?

Judging from YangYue’s straightforward character, this news would have been a huge blow to him. Of course, Jinxia didn’t want to tell him either, but if YangYue continued to think she was in Gusu, he would definitely find a way to go there and visit her. At that time, this matter couldn’t be covered up anymore. What was even more worrying, on Shangguan Xi’s side…

There was still A’Rui!

Jinxia turned to look at Lu Yi and anxiously said, “Daren, about A’Rui, Shangguan Xi still doesn’t know about it right?”

“There’s no need to rush.” Lu Yi said calmly, “Shangguan Xi trusts A’Rui very much, she will not believe that there is a problem with him. I advise you not to walk on fire.”

Jinxia understood what he’d meant by ‘walking on fire’, because once A’Rui would have found out to have been exposed, she was afraid he wouldn’t be able to let her live.

“Then what should I do about this? I wonder if the transportation led by Wu’An Gang and the lost river fund had anything to do with him.” Since A’Rui was also a participant during the transport, Jinxia felt this matter wasn’t as simple as she’d thought.

Lu Yi slightly glanced at her, “It’s coming.”

Jinxia didn’t understand what he meant, “What is?”

“When the water falls and the stone will come out, a hundred taels of silver will be coming soon.” Lu Yi seemed unwilling to explain too much and went straight past her towards the city gates.

When they returned to the post station, as soon as she stepped in the courtyard, Jinxia spotted YangYue sitting on the stepping stones, looking like his soul had flown out of his body.

“Da Yang?” She called out all anxious.

Upon hearing her voice, YangYue raised his head, then got up quickly and stepped forward, then said, “Where did you go? They said yesterday you didn’t come home at all.”

“Uh, there was a matter outside of time, so we had to stay overnight.” she briefly answered him, since the whole situation was very difficult to explain and there were things she didn’t want to mention. Lu Yi glanced at her.

Only then did YangYue see Lu Yi, and hurriedly greeted him, not being able to hide the nervous expression on his face.

“Why did you come here?” Jinxia said in a panic.

“Oh…Last night, I encountered a strange incident.” YangYue’s tone was frightened, “I don’t know if I was dreaming, the whole thing was very strange.”

“What happened?”

After that, YangYue carefully described what he had experienced the night before, in as much detail as possible. After finishing, he nervously looked at Jinxia: “Do you think this is real? When I woke up, I was by the river and it felt like a dream.”

Jinxia looked at him in a daze, she’d never expected A’Rui to frighten YangYue before throwing away Zhai Lanye’s body. She hesitantly turned her head to look at Lu Yi, then said embarrassed to YangYue, “…It should be a dream, it’s alright, that dream is scary.”

YangYue was confused, “After that, I went back down the alley and investigated: from the beginning to the end of the ally, there was nothing, is it really a dream?”

“Maybe because you worry too much about her, uh, what do you call that? Ah, ‘daytime longing for the night to dream’.” Jinxia tried to calm him down.

Lu Yi carefully observed her, shook his head and continued walking.

YangYue stood dumbfounded on the spot. Jinxia also didn’t dare to say anything else, she just stood there with him. After a long time, YangYue looked at her again and asked, “You also think it is a dream?”

Despite the guilty conscience, Jinxia heavily nodded her head.

“I thought so too!” YangYue took a deep breath and then turned to walk away.

Behind him, Jinxia let out a sigh of relief, but she became more and more worried – If he bothered to put the body in the ‘Ai Bieli’ just to scare YangYue, then this had to be a warning! A warning telling him to stop having affection for Zhai Lanye, but Zhai Lanye clearly said he didn’t want to take her away…

One did not want her, but others couldn’t touch her either.

Jinxia furrowed her eyebrows and thought, ‘The person behind all this must be a lunatic with a messed up mind.’ Using a torture instrument like the ‘Ai Bieli’ and letting her constantly see it, what exactly did he want? Was he really playing with her?

***

At night, Jinxia did not forget to take off Mrs. Shen’s borrowed clothes and to wash them clean. When the morning came, she packed the clothes neatly and rode the horse to Mrs. Shen’s place, but the place was now empty.

She was standing in an empty room, even though she was only there for one night, somehow, she was feeling sad inside. Yesterday, still sitting in that place with the beggar uncle and Mrs. Shen, telling stories and laughing and now not knowing when they could meet again. Mrs. Shen was a skillful physician, but hated the outside world. It seemed their chance of meeting was remote.

She walked slowly to the room where Lu Yi had been treated, looked at the bed he had slept in… Jinxia couldn’t help but blush, then she turned around: there was a small porcelain bottle placed on the tiny table next to the bed.

The whole room was empty, so the white porcelain bottle really stood out. It was obvious that the bottle had been deliberately left behind.

Jinxia opened it to see the insides:  there were several pills and a roll of paper. She opened the scroll of paper at once, on it it was written: ‘one pill divided in two, drink the inside, use the outside to apply on wounds, this can cure the Japanese poison.’

Mrs. Shen had guessed that she would have returned, leaving on purpose that antidote for her. Jinxia’s heart feels warm and her eyes started to become watery. She took a few deep breaths to calm herself down.
