85.1 The Declaration Ceremony

By Gandire Alea December 6, 2022

“I will defeat you and become Ristia’s first wife!”
Neimie cries out and readies her sword.

“Fufufu, as Ristia’s first wife, I pledge him everlasting support. Hence, I will not lose to you.”
Ceries-sama, in contrast to Neimie, gracefully unsheathes the sword at her waist and holds it ready.

Neimie and Ceries-sama are in a face-off. Tension fills the air. Then, cheers erupt from the large crowd of spectators.

“Hey, who are you cheering for?”
Slatton, seated beside Ristia, asks him a mean-spirited question.

Ristia and I, along with our classmates, are watching the match between Neimie and Ceries-sama from the student waiting area of the training grounds.

Today, we who have completed this year at school, have an extremely important day. Our families along with local residents have gathered for the unveiling of our results from our past year’s hard work.

“I am not good at martial arts,” there is no student here who would say something so weak. We’ve all been striving in our martial arts this past year after all, but not because we intend to become adventurers or because it’s preparation for our one year journey. Our endeavors were for becoming able to deal with mamono if we encounter them, for becoming able to survive, and to live our lives starting today.

Today we demonstrate how splendid we’ve become to our parents and our neighbors. In this way, we can today tell them, “Please continue watching over us on our one year journey with peace of mind.”

We’ve invited a great number of people to the training grounds and are now displaying the fruits of our year’s hard work with matches. It is during them that a ritual is performed. Before our battle, we all announce our goal for our journeys. In other words, we need to declare the road we will be walking from now on.

Of those who fought before Neimie and Ceries-sama, my classmates have declared they’d do things like become adventurers, travel to Jortenitost Kingdom to broaden their knowledge, and open a business in the second capital.

That they all have their own goals and dreams is incredible.

While I am having such thoughts, a swell of cheers erupts from everyone at the training grounds. Upon returning my attention to the match, I find Ceries-sama struggling against Neimie who is nimbly moving around.

This is unexpected.

Everyone seems to have thought the same thing and they all are now cheering the struggling Ceries-sama. Neimie may be cute, but as expected, Oujo Ceries-sama is overwhelmingly more popular.

Now that I am paying attention to the match, I see that Ceries-sama is using dragon spirit to increase her physical abilities, yet the one who’s been dominating the match from the start is Neimie. By darting around right and left, she slips through the gaps of Ceries-sama’s graceful swordplay and moves in to attack. Making the smallest swings possible, she begins to drive Ceries-sama back.

Ceries-sama steps away each time Neimie jumps forward to attack. She is being pushed back to the corner of the boundary lines.

“Ooh, Neimie is quite spirited today.”
Slatton claps his hands as he enjoys the match.

“Although Ceries has a trick up her sleeve.” (Ristia)
“Ahh, that’s gonna be a problem.”

Ristia and Slatton, as teammates, have a conversation that doesn’t make sense to me.

Even so, Neimie is quite strong. She’s leading Ceries-sama around despite her using dragon spirit. Seeing as they are comrades, she must know her like the palm of her hand.

Ceries-sama is steadily getting pressed even further back. The moment I think she is cornered, the two cross blades and Neimie is blown away.

“Uwaa, you used it.”
Neimie looks at Ceries-sama with irritation.

“Uhehe, she brought it out.”
Slatton looks at Ceries-sama with the same irritation.

“What was that?”
I try asking Ristia.

“Right, that’s Ceries’ special technique. It’s an incredible blowback.”

“Huh?”
I don’t get what he means. Her special technique is blowing back?

“It’s a dragon technique, so I don’t know the details, but by invoking it, she can even blow away a great sheep.”
“Eh?”

A great sheep? Aren’t they those terrifying feral sheep? I’m pretty sure they are several times larger than a person…

“I’ve seen her blow an earth dragon away with it.” (Slatton?)
“It was a small one, but still probably heavier than a great sheep.” (Ristia?)
“Eetto…”

What kind of dragon technique is that? I’ve never heard of any superhuman techniques like that.

“Unyahh.”
Neimie is blown back every time they cross swords.

This match has already been decided. No matter what she does, she’s blown back the instant she touches Ceries-sama, no questions asked. She needs to fight without touching Ceries-sama if she wants to win, but if she could do that, she’d have won a long time ago.

This is completely flipped from earlier. Now Neimie is the one steadily being forced back. In the end, she is forced out of bounds and loses.

What incredible power.
I feel like I was given a glimpse of what makes Ceries-sama terrifying.

Ceries-sama is victorious and loud cheers erupt. Among those cries are many voices of admiration praising Neimei for putting up a good fight. Regardless, Neimei is frustrated.

Well, yeah. Even though she had a strong performance in the first half, she was still overwhelmed and lost.

Neimei returns to where we are gathered while grumbling, “Boo boo,” to Ceries-sama. Ceries-sama looks quite troubled as a result.

The next match at the training grounds begins without delay. As the rounds are generally decided by lottery, there are times when pairings are made with a large difference in ability. Those matches end right away.

In the past, there seems to have been a proposal to make the pairings be between students of similar ability, but an oni like instructor said, “Then, will everyone only be attacked by mamono of similar strength too?” As such, the lottery system has continued to this day.

The matches and declaration ceremonies continue without any trouble, and Ruiseine’s turn arrives. She is a shrine maiden, so not once has she practiced on the training grounds. That is because after our lessons, she along with Kiiri and Inea always return to the temple. But just for today, alongside everyone else, she’s making her debut match.

Of today’s matches, Ruiseine’s is highly favored. After all, she is a war shrine maiden. Among shrine maidens, she is a woman who specializes in combat. That said, she has never come to the training grounds before, so no one knows how strong she is.

Even though we make periodic training investigations into the ruins, Ruiseine basically acts as a shrine maiden during them. To begin with, the training investigations into the ruins have little risk of battle breaking out. Those demon sword wielders and that mazoku ambush are exceptions.

Just how does a war shrine maiden wage battle? All of my classmates are swallowing with that anticipation in mind.

“Ara ara, maa maa.”
Ruiseine smiles at everyone. She doesn’t seem to be nervous.
