Fang Daichuan woke up early even though he couldn’t get a good sleep last night. The sound of wind and rain outside the window combined with the fear inside his heart entangled with each other, torturing him all night.

After putting on his crumpled T-shirt, he went to wash and saw in the mirror that he had two big dark circles around his eyes and an acne on his forehead. He couldn’t help but feel annoyed.

The cosmetics were meticulously prepared in the bathroom making him admire the boss a bit. There was not much water nor food, but these details showed at least they were a considerate person. He tore open a sealed concealer stick and applied it on the acne and also on the dark circles.

It’s pretty easy to use. He looked at the brand of the concealer stick, thinking about introducing it to Xiao Zhou when he went back, but he couldn’t read the brand name. It was written in some kind of pinyin*  with strange little dots and short lines on the vowels.

Fang Daichuan then went out and checked the time. It was just six o’clock. He remembered the task Li Sinian entrusted him with and took a book from the shelf at the door.

There was no one on the first floor, and the long table was empty. He took a scoop of water from the kitchen, sprinkled it on the carpet, then sat near the stairs, waiting for everyone to come downstairs.

Outside the window, the sky was overcast. At six o’clock in the summer, the sky should be bright and shining. However, the rain was pouring hard outside, making people unable to guess what time it was.

Fang Daichuan lowered his head and pretended to read. What he picked up was a translated book. The unique translation tone and the strangeness made him distracted. Even after he had read half of the book, he only remembered it was the story of a waste paper recycling yard administrator. He also remembered the two gypsy women unloading the scrap paper they picked up, then lying in the garbage and smoking while spreading their thighs without care, even revealing their muddy private parts from under their skirts, surrounded by flies swarming around.

On the stormy island, in the dim morning, the world was as quiet as death. Reading a book like this, Fang Daichuan fell into trance, feeling like he somehow left behind everything and in the whole world, there was only himself.

That’s fine. Fang Daichuan smiled bitterly. Why should he be afraid of being alone?

The sound of the door closing upstairs interrupted all his thoughts.

He unconsciously straightened his back and raised his eyes from the book, with the pen in his hand hovering over the page, ready to write down at any moment.

It was Niu Xinyan who came down. The temperature was a bit low today so she was wearing a long-sleeved shirt with loose cuffs. Her son, who stuck to her leg, grabbed the corner of her clothes and walked with his head down, with a timid expression on his face.

Still pretending. Fang Daichuan rolled his eyes inwardly. He only gave them a glance before retracting his gaze back to the book, clenched his fist and coughed twice against it, then turned the page by pinching the corner of the book.

“Xiquan, walk properly and don’t hold mother’s clothes.” Niu Xinyan gently touched the messy hair on the top of her son’s head. When she raised her eyes and saw Fang Daichuan, she smiled and nodded at him, saying, “Xiquan, say hello to uncle.”

Fuck it. Fang Daichuan had goosebumps all over. This kid, he couldn’t even guess his true age. That kid is Tianshan Tonglao*, this dad can’t be your uncle.

(T/N: So Tianshan Tonglao is a character from a wuxia novel, I have put the wiki link below, basically this character is a 90 years old grandma with a child body. Also again Chuan’er really referred himself as dad)

“Good morning, uncle.” Unexpectedly, the child was well-behaved. He quickly looked up and then lowered his head back instantly. The moment he raised his head, Fang Daichuan clearly saw his eyes, it was a pair of clear and timid eyes that really belonged to the child.

Fang Daichuan forced himself to smile, persuading himself to forget their weird behavior last night. He replied, “Hello.” He then pretended to inadvertently glance at the carpet. It was clean, it seemed that the two of them didn’t go out last night.

The atmosphere was a bit awkward, but Fang Daichuan was professional when it came to gag and impromptu. He acted like he didn’t notice anything and chatted with them, “Woke up so early?”

“Yes. If you have children, you have to get up early every day and make breakfast for them. I have been used to it for so many years.” Niu Xinyan smiled and tidied her bangs, tugging the scattered locks of hair behind her ears. She talked as she passed by Fang Daichuan and walked towards the kitchen. The child was sitting on the long table, playing with his fingers without saying a word.

The rain showed no signs of stopping, and the sky was still gloomy.

The second one to come down was Yang Song. The girl obviously didn’t sleep well. She looked so haggard that even the concealer couldn’t cover it. She put on red lipstick, probably to brighten up her complexion, but the tiredness in her eyes revealed everything.

Fang Daichuan picked up the cup and drank a mouthful of water while glancing subtly. The carpet was not stained with anything, her shoe prints were also transparent watermarks.——Clean soles.

“Morning.” Fang Daichuan said as he marked the page with a code that only he could understand.

Yang Song smiled and said, “Morning.” She obviously had lingering fears about the child, hesitated for a moment before going straight into the kitchen to help.

By now, Fang Daichuan could easily distinguish Li Sinian’s footsteps. ——Like a second uncle, leisurely and unhurried. He looked up, and it was indeed Li Sinian. This grandfather was standing there, with one hand in his pocket, looking at him.

Fang Daichuan closed his eyes and slightly shook his head. He didn’t even glance at his feet when Li Sinian walked across the carpet.

“What book are you reading?” Li Sinian casually asked.

Fang Daichuan did not expect the question. He froze for a moment, before turning the book and glanced at the cover, only then reporting the lengthy book title. “Too Loud a Solitude.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Too_Loud_a_Solitude

“That book is boring! The protagonist is a loser, the book is full of obscenity and self-comfort. The environment is small, and the atmosphere is suffocating.” Boss Du’s voice was heard from the stairs. “The owner of this villa is quite hypocritical, putting this mediocre and obscure kind of book that lures college students.”

Li Sinian looked up, took a look at the still clean long carpet, raised an eyebrow and retorted, “Really? I don’t think so.”

Liu Xin also walked downstairs. He pushed his glasses and stepped on the carpet, leaving a clean watermark.

Fang Daichuan became a little anxious. He took a deep breath and continued to write everyone’s  code name in the blank space of the page. Six people had already arrived, and each name still had “Nothing” on it.

After everyone sat down, Niu Xinyan brought out a few cups of coffee and distributed them to some people.

“Where did you get the coffee?” Du Chaosheng thanked her, raising his eyebrows and smiling.

Niu Xinyan said with a smile, “I found half-unpacked coffee beans in the kitchen’s utility room. They smelled of good quality so I simply boiled them.”

It’s really good. Fang Daichuan had already gotten the smell of coffee in the air. He didn’t know much about these foreign brands. He only felt it tasted mellow and the quality was unlike those one-hundred-yuan-a-bag ones in chain stores.

Du Chaosheng asked casually, “Has Miss Niu ever been a secretary? I think you have a talent for being a secretary.”

“I only worked as a secretary for my husband.” Niu Xinyan pursed her lips. “My husband is reluctant to let me work so I have always been a full-time wife at home.”

“Is that so…” Didn’t know what was going on inside Du Chaosheng’s mind, but his expression was a bit melancholy.

Liu Xin seemed to have been scalded by hot coffee, and he couldn’t hold it firmly. The strong coffee spilled half to the table and the cup and saucer touched, producing a crisp sound.

Li Sinian saw all the reactions and frowned slightly.

The little couple finally got up. Fang Daichuan heard the movement and threw a small coffee spoon into the cup. He could clearly hear the sound of Chen Hui’s canvas shoes stepping on the wooden stairs. This girl was slightly plump and loved to hop around, so her steps on the stairs were loud. She was whispering to her boyfriend about the terrible weather, saying she should get some sun after going back, otherwise her skin would smell of salty fish.

“But do you think the two of us can go back?” There was a subtle fear in the girl’s voice.

Du Wei didn’t answer her. Ignoring everyone in the hall, he softly kissed his girlfriend at the top of the stairs, as if it was the end of the world, proving their love toward each other. Everyone on the first floor turned their heads tacitly, giving the little couple privacy.

After they had kissed, they came to the long table holding hands and then sat down. Before Fang Daichuan could react, he felt that Li Sinian kicked him lightly. He raised his eyes and saw Li Sinian’s eyes move slightly to the side.

He quickly glanced at the carpet at the entrance of the stairs, and the long beige woolen blanket was stained with two pairs of bright mud marks. It turned out to be them? He was a little puzzled, but a little relieved.

He then looked up at the clock. There was only half an hour left before eight o’clock. The old lady and Ding Zihui had not come down yet.

Everyone looked at the stairs together, like the audience watching the public execution*, looking forward to seeing who would be pushed under the guillotine next.

It’s a pity that their hope was crushed.

There were sounds of two doors slamming upstairs. Old lady Song and Ding Zihui walked downstairs one after another.

——Nobody died last night.
