Chapter 33 Part 2: Mountain Ant

Tamers are rare hunters who can tame monsters without signing a contract, unlike mages. Of course, the downside is that the monsters they can tame are limited by their rank.

-Kirururu!

The serrated jaws clicked together, making a bizarre noise. It was more like a vibration or ultrasound than an actual ‘sound’.

“Min Da-Lae. Can you hold it out?”

“Perhaps.”

She replied, holding up her body armor. The attack power of a Mountain Ant itself is not high. Since Its exoskeleton is strong, it’s just a matter of whether the dealers can pierce through it.

“Mr. Kim Ju-il and Ms. Han Seo-ha. I don’t know your fighting styles, so please act freely for now. Just follow my instructions in between.”

“Okay.”

“Mmm.”

It was better for me to have no restrictions anyway.

When we were ready, the Mountain Ant finally started to move. First, it pounced on Min Da-Lae in front of me. It made a huge noise, but Min Da-Lae held on. She was knocked back a few times due to the lack of weight, but she seemed to have higher stats than I thought.

“Move!”

I shouted to a dazed Kim Ju-il, and then I took off running. It’s all we can do to attack as much as possible while Min Da-Lae distracts it. I stayed right next to her and aimed my gun. I fixed it towards its head while its snout gnawed at the shield.

I raise my grip on the gun, while using the top of Min Da-Lae’s shield for support. The eyes of the mountain ant were right in front of me. For the briefest of moments, it felt like time had stopped. The moment before it realized the danger, I had already seized the opportunity. BANG!

-Kii-ii-ii-gah!

“Hah.”

The power of an SSS-class weapon is extraordinary, even if it is still underskilled and locked.

One of the mountain ant’s eyes was completely blown out. As it writhed in pain, Min Da-Lae, who was barely holding on, was completely engulfed.

“You have to hang in there!”

“Ugh..! I know!”

But she quickly regained her footing and stood firmly. Her shield was slightly damaged, but since she was still an aspirant, she didn’t have a high-ranked weapon. The mountain ant struggled, then regained its senses and stared at us.

-Kirururu….

A squeak rang out. It probably realized that It’s hard to break through Min Da-Lae’s defense. And that I was the cause of its pain. The ant lunges towards me, but stops short when a shield instantly blocks the path right in front of me. I quickly turned my head to Kim Ju-il, who was standing defenseless.

“What, what, what!”

He quickly panicked and swung his sword. Luckily or unluckily, his dual-wielding allowed him to parry the blow, just barely though. The two swords tangled, and It barely managed to deflect the attack.

“Ugh… help me!”

As soon as she shouted, Lee Eun-Woo answered.

“Move to the side!”

“Huh? Ugh…”

When Kim Ju-il reflexively avoided and followed Eun-Woo’s words, something surprising happened.

-Crack!

Wow.… It was literally a bolt from the sky. The lightning bolt fell from the edge of the sky and struck the ant on the head. It instantly died without making a sound. The faint smell of cooking meat drifted away.

“Oh my god….”

If Kim Ju-il had stood there with his sword, he would have been electrocuted by now.

“Is everyone okay?”

“Yeah.”

Lee Eun-Woo asked with a nonchalant expression, but we all felt a high-dimensional barrier from him, a level that was extremely dizzying. Kim Ju-il was lying on the floor, still unable to stand up. Indeed, the genius mage was on a different level from them… But it was not enough for me to admire him.

I had noticed something earlier. The ant’s stomach was carved with a subtle doorway pattern, like it had been cut open and then closed again.

“Ugh… Seo-Ha what are you doing? Huh?”

I flipped the ant over and slashed its stomach, and Min Da-Lae was about to ask what I was doing, but then she shut up. A glass jar came out of it, and inside the jar was a piece of paper. I unfolded the paper and showed it to her.

“Go east.”

“It’s a hint!”

“Wow… What kind of terrible hint is that?”

Indeed. Tamers send tamed monsters to give you hints, lol. If it were a different group of test takers, They might have gone to all kinds of trouble already. Four novice hunters would not have died because they were just the right level, but… With a time limit of one week to find the scroll, it would be such a waste of time and the energy consumption is fatal. Of course, even if Lee Eun-Woo wasn’t there, I could have used my skills to poke at its weaknesses…

‘But It’s stupid to reveal your unique skill in front of untrustworthy teammates.’

In this way, perhaps the examiners will realize that Lee Eun-Woo is an out-of-the-ordinary powerhouse, and the entire test plan will be revised in the future. Aside from Lee Eun-Woo’s excellence, they still have to test the qualifications of the other three.

Will they send out more monsters with a slightly higher level of strength, or isolate Lee Eun-Woo?

There are many ways to evaluate. I ran all sorts of simulations in my head. Just like the written test, the actual test is something that stands out. It’s best to pass at a moderate level.

“Hoo… For now, since everyone else seems to be awake, why don’t we get an early start?”

“Uh-huh. Sure. But where’s east?”

I pulled my compass out of my backpack.

“I brought a compass.”

“Yay!”

Click. I opened the compass and checked the east direction. It was clear where to go.

“But that gun, what brand is it? It doesn’t look like it’s an ordinary one, seeing as how you blew off half of a Mountain ant’s face with one shot.”

Lee Eun-Woo asked with a glint in his eye. Yeah, it’s not the kind of weapon an aspiring hunter would be carrying. “I got it from the Yeonhwado Gate so there’s no brand. It’s a good gun though.”

“Wow, from that gate? That thing is huge, and it must have a lot of items.”

Min Da-Lae said in a half gasp. I nodded.

“Let’s get moving.”

There was still a long way to go.
