Chapter 40 Part 2: Unconvinced

‘Am I already on par with experienced Hunters?’

I made a little diagnosis myself, and realized that I still have a long way to go.

“…Well done, Hunter Han Seo-ha. As you’ve seen, there’s more to the exercise than just standing around and attacking and defending. You must do everything you can to attack your opponent, and they will also do everything they can to defend against your attacks, and that’s the goal of these little match-ups.”

At his words, the newcomers began to chatter immediately. “How did she do that?” They said.

‘Yeah. That’s right. You don’t have to respond to their flimsy arguments. Just show them the overwhelming difference between your skills and theirs.’

I glanced to my left and right, and they all stammered and avoided my gaze.

“Of course, you’re new Hunters, so I’m not looking for a high level of competition, so I’d like you to perform as a pair.”

He called out the names of the groups he had prepared in advance. The paired Hunters took their places and moved on, but I didn’t hear my name until the end.

“Finally, Hunter Han Seo-ha….”

He finally said my name. When I looked at him, there was silence, as if he was contemplating for a moment.

“I’m going to exclude you from this match-up because I think if you compete with the other trainees there would likely be injuries.”

“Then what should I do?”

“You are free to act as you wish.”

With that, he went to check on the other trainees.

‘Is this okay?’

But I also think I was not on the same level as the other trainees. If Eun-Woo was here, I might be able to do something.

‘But, he’s no match with me in close combat, so if I can close the distance with my skills, I’ll definitely win.’

“I thought Seo-ha would have passed this test much earlier than us.”

Song Da-Jung said as we ate dinner together. If I hadn’t been hospitalized, I probably would have.

“You’re right. But when I didn’t hear from her, I thought she was sick.”

“I was hospitalized.”

“Hospitalized?”

Song Da-jung stopped eating and looked surprised. “Oh, no…… I just couldn’t imagine Seo-ha getting hurt,” she said, adding a little later.

“Now that I think about it, I think I leaned on Seo-ha a lot at that age, because she was standing alone while everyone else was shaking. Even if she didn’t say it, I trusted and relied on her.”

“That’s true. She was so amazing that we didn’t even think she was one of us. I’ve never forgotten it. When she burned that oil whale, I thought… It was really, really cool.”

It was refreshing to hear these words after a long time. They were all regular people, and I may look like an ordinary kid on the Outside, but I am a professional hunter on the inside, so in a way, it was only natural that I should be the one leading them.

“Plus, I realized it earlier, we’re all trained in the same way, and we’ve been told we’re all pretty talented at the academy, but Seo-Ha was really on a different level compared to the other trainees.”

Well…… I think my career will cry if my skills were anything like the newcomers who were just starting out. But I knew they wouldn’t be able to understand, so I didn’t say anything.

“Were you badly injured?”

“I was in the hospital for a while, and took the Hunter test almost right away… It must have been a little over a month since I got out of the hospital.”

“You were in the hospital that long?!”

“I think it was about three months.”

Even though my abdomen was pierced, I had recovered because of Beelzebub’s blood, but the wound was reopened once again, which prolonged my hospitalization. Modern medicine doesn’t know much about the effects of demon blood on the human body.

“Yea?”

“Who can even hurt Seo-Ha?”

It would be too much of a stretch if I told them that the boss monster of the Yeonhwado Gate and the hunter of Red Flames, Jeon Chung-Woon did…

They have no idea who I met or what I did after I left the gym. They should have met me when I was just a beginner, it was a time when I was a bit self-righteous. I think Hye-won and Yeon-won mellowed me out a lot.

“Oh well, it’s common in Gates.”

“But did you…. Go out and find the person you said you were looking for?”

“Yeah. I found her.”

I couldn’t help but smile.

“Uh… What’s she like?”

“She’s a professional hunter. She’s been with me since I left the gym, and now I’m staying at her house.”

Song Da-Jung thought for a moment, then smiled.

“I’m glad you seem more relaxed.”

“Yeah, we’re outside the gate. Now so..”

“If everyone saw you inside the gate, they wouldn’t be saying crap about you getting First Place.”

Song Da-Jung was still upset about the rumors of the First Place and Second Place manipulation that still circulated once in a while. The trainees who used to take classes with me don’t even talk about it anymore, but Kim Tae-byung suddenly asked.

“By the way, do you think it’s okay to tell the others that we’ve met with Seo-Ha?”

Apparently, the two of them have been in contact with the other people at the gym the whole time. I wondered if I had neglected them too much. Of course, there was no way I could find their whereabouts immediately, but…

“It doesn’t matter, I’m curious, what’s everyone up to?”

“Quite a few people have become Hunters! I could have gone my whole life without knowing about it, so in a way, that gate was also an opportunity.”
