Chapter 42 Part 1: Briefing

Bang! The bullet pierced the target in the middle.

“Perfect score.”

The score was read out loud. Only the center was gouged out, as if only one shot had been fired.

“Excellent.”

A woman with round glasses pushed her glasses up. It was Park Ja-Young, an active Hunter, aka… Sharpshooter, who teaches Range dealers.

“Even if it’s not this much, You should be able to put all ten shots within seven points, if not more, because nothing is as important as accuracy at long range. If you can’t even hit the target, it doesn’t mean anything, you know?”

They all nodded at that. Well. To a certain extent, she was right. In my own analysis, I’m not really a great shooter. Of course, that’s only in comparison to other professional hunters who have gone by the monikers of Beckoning, like Robin Hood, and Shingung.

In general, my level of marksmanship is good. However, at the top of the game, accuracy becomes a very relative measure. Some hunters are so focused on accuracy that they’re known as Shingung, while others, like me, look for other ways to improve.

For me, I’ve found myself fighting more often at close range, to the point where I’m embarrassed to even say that I’m a ranged dealer. I prefer to use my unique skills to get in close contact with them and surprise them.

‘The stronger the opponent, the less likely they are to let you get away with flying attacks.’

It’s unavoidable. It’s the fate of the ranged dealer. If you’re attacking from a distance, it takes as long as it flies. It’s a fatal flaw in the race to the top.

“I’m annoyed…”

Then someone’s voice splashed near me.

“… From last time alone… Just wants to stand out…”

…I can’t hear everything, but I have a rough idea of what he’s saying.

‘It’s an open class today, so they probably want to prove themselves.’

There were three or four scouts observing the class, not many, but I could see them sending me curious glances. Inevitably, the performance of other trainees is overshadowed by mine. That’s what I hate about it.

‘I don’t have to deal with them.’

They gossip behind my back but don’t have the guts to act in front of me. That’s how they feel.

Bang! Once again, I answered with a shot to the center of the bull’s-eye. In the world of hunters, words are unnecessary. It’s all about skills.

“I thought I was going to die!”

Song Da-Jung cried, while I casually listened and took a bite of the egg roll. The fluffy texture is delicious. The rice at the training center is surprisingly good. Is it because it’s a place where they spend a lot of tax money or because they received a lot of donations from the guild?

“Why did you even run around the gym until you collapsed….” Kim Tae-byung was also scolded, and his hand holding the spoon trembled. He couldn’t hold it properly and the soup splashed everywhere. That’s bad.

“It won’t be like this all week, will it? I already wish tomorrow wouldn’t come.”

“Eat more rice. You need to eat to stay strong.”

I said my piece, but Da-jung didn’t seem to hear it. I need to eat so I can get through tomorrow.

“Your training must have been hard.”

Lee Eun-Woo added nonchalantly from the side. He’s been eating with us for a while now, and pretending to be one of us.

“It wasn’t just a hard level.. He’s trying to… He must be trying to kill me…”

“Isn’t Lee Eun-Woo-Ssi tired? Seo-haya, are you?”

“Nope.”

Holding a gun and shooting. I could do it all day. Of course, this body isn’t quite as trained as it should be, so there are some sore muscles in my shoulders, but my hit rate against an unmoving target is higher to begin with, so there’s nothing to adjust.

“I can manage, and it’s similar to what I did at the Blue Serpent.”

“Is the curriculum similar

“It may not be exactly similar, but… mages’ training is somewhat methodical.”

Lee Eun-Woo waved his hand lightly, and phasic electricity bloomed on his palm. The shimmering beams of light were definitely a mysterious sight. Dajung-Noona opened her eyes wide in awe.

“How finely and exquisitely can you mold this magic power, that’s the key.”

The beams of light turned into thin threads that began to twist and turn. Intricate patterns blossomed, like braided hair. It was a beautiful sight.

Zap! Lee Eun-Woo folded his hand and it disappeared. It was like a mirage on a midsummer night.

“It’s amazing!”

“Isn’t it?”

It’s rare to see magic this close. Mages and healers are a rare breed after all.

“Did you enjoy the briefing session yesterday?”

“Oh. Me and Seoha just went directly to the dorms.”

“Hey, Tae-byung, how was it?”

“You mean the briefing? It was pretty normal.”

Of course it was. It’s obvious that everyone will try to say something nice.

“There were about three guilds there, and…. One of them seemed kind of nice.”

“Oh which one?”

“A guild called ‘Big Dipper’ and they seem to have a strong focus on tanks and melee dealers. They’re more supportive than other places, but they’re honest enough to tell you that it’s up to you after that.”

If it’s a guild like Big Dipper then that’s fine as long as it’s consistent. It’s a place with a strong sense of being a knightly organization. It has an image of being upright and sincere. It goes well with Kim Tae-byung’s personality, so I think it’s okay.

“Should I go?”

“They’re having a briefing session again today, and I’m going to attend.”

“Really? I’m tired, but… I should go too!”

“If you want to make the roster, you should go now. Heuk.”

Kim Tae-byung pointed to his watch. Then Da-jung said, “Let’s hurry up,” and then she ate quickly and left. It was just me and Lee Eun-Woo left. I took another bite of the egg roll.
