Chapter 43 Part 1: Recruitment

Clap, Clap!

Amidst the thunderous applause, two impeccably dressed men walked onto the stage. It was Jeon Chung-Woon and Kim Ki-taek. I stiffened as I didn’t expect to see them side by side again. They were dressed in crisp black and ultramarine-blue suits, very different from the way they dressed as Hunters. Kim Ki-taek’s clothes emphasized his imposing height and long limbs. Jeon Cheong-woon was similarly dressed in a suit with faintly bluish hair, giving him an air of mystery, though his characteristic expression remained the same.

“Trainees, it is a pleasure to meet you. I’m Kim Ki-Taek of Red Flames, and as you all know this is Hunter Jeon Chung-woon.”

Clap, Clap.

A shorter round of applause than earlier passed.

“I’ve heard that the quality of this institute’s trainees this time is very high, and I’m sure there are some of you who will be joining us.”

He skillfully builds anticipation. Kim Ki-Taek seemed to have been born for this.

“I wonder if I still need to explain more about Red Flames… But I’m here to tell you more details…”

We held eye contact for a while, his mouth slightly open in surprise, and I felt a little funny, but also pleased that he was looking for me after all this time. I smiled slightly and tilted my head. When he stopped talking, Jeon Chung-Woon looked over at him, puzzled.

“Ah…. Yes, I’m here.”

Kim Ki-taek quickly looked away and continued.

“First, let’s watch the video we prepared.”

With that, the two of them leave the podium for a moment, and the lights go out in the ballroom. Before they were gone, Kim Ki-Taek even winked at me.

‘I stared at him, then pretended to go to the restroom and walked out of the hall immediately.’

“Ms. Han Seo-ha.”

“Han Seo-ha.”

As soon as I left, the two of them were already standing in front of me. Kim Ki-taek acted like he had just met someone who had come back from the dead, which was somewhat true, now that I think about it.

“How have you been? How are your wounds? Did you heal well? I thought you were just discharged from the hospital?”

“I think you’ve been doing well. You look fine.”

Jeon Chung-woon replies on my behalf. I nodded because I was indeed doing well and fine.

“I haven’t seen you in a long time.”

“Is that all you have to say?”

I don’t know what more Kim Ki-taek wants. “I heard everything. At the end, you stabbed yourself in the stomach…”

“Ah. I did.”

“Oh, yes, you did, and that’s not the end of it!”

I’ve said it before, but Kim Ki-Taek tends to play it cool, and he’s actually more ethically responsible than anyone else. That kind of injury would be expected of a Hunter, even though I wasn’t a Hunter at the time.

“Why did you refuse all of our visits? We thought you did that because you were completely fed up with this industry.”

“Not really, it’s just that, I have no intention of joining the Red Flames, so I just kept my distance… Didn’t Hyewon-Unnie tell you? Hyewon-Unnie is in constant contact with the Red Flames after all.”

“I don’t know if there’s anything …Pyo Hye-won…. Point out,” Kim Ki-taek muttered sullenly at Hye-won’s name.

“That big sister of yours. She’s so overprotective.”

Apparently, he didn’t want me to get tangled up with Red Flames anymore, so he saved his words.

“I’m glad to see you again.”

“Mr. Chung-Woon, you’re not even surprised.”

“I was expecting it. I heard that the First Place Recruitment of the training center this time was called Han Seo-Ha.”

“But I thought it was simply the same name…”

“There’s no way she’d quit, with her skills.”

Chung-woon replies as if he’s stating the obvious. “If she doesn’t use her skills to become a hunter and rot, then there’s no one else more stupid than her. As far as I know she’s not an idiot, so of course she’ll become a hunter.”

‘Well…’ It’s a valid point, but there’s something about him being so cocky that makes me want to tackle him.’

“… It’s hard to tell sometimes whether you’re smart or stupid.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Nothing.”

Kim Ki-Taek must have felt the same way. “Anyway…. It’s been a while since I’ve seen your face. I have to get back to work, so we’ll talk more after the briefing. And I hope you’ll reconsider joining the Red Flames. I’ll make you an offer with a few more conditions. Now, Mr. Jeon Chung-Woon. Please go inside.”

Bam… “Wait..” Before I can even say, ‘Hey, I’m going in too, and no, I don’t want to join the Red Flames.’

They’ve already left.

‘… They’re doing this on purpose. Definitely doing this on purpose.’

They made an appointment to meet me and left without waiting for an answer. It’s not like Kim Ki-Taek to do that. He must be worried because he thinks I’ll say no. But I can’t just stand in the empty hallway and do nothing. Well, I also want to make amends with a comrade-in-arms. I haven’t seen them in a long time, so there’s no harm in that. With that thought in mind, I went back into the banquet hall. As if nothing had happened, Kim Ki-taek was speaking in front of us again.

“Do you know him?”

Lee Eun-Woo whispered from the side. He must have realized that Kim Ki-taek had stopped talking when he saw me. He was quite perceptive.

“I met him at the gate.”
