Chapter 43 Part 2: Recruitment

I dismissed it because it was still in the middle of the lecture and Lee Eun-Woo didn’t probe further. I was holding a pass, this was given before the Red Flames presentation, which was to follow. After Red Flames finished, I left Da-jung and Kim Tae-byung, who were talking about the 30-minute break, and headed to the officials’ waiting room. This is not a place where trainees are allowed to go, but Kim Ki-taek and Jeon Chung-Woon allowed it. It’s just on the way to the Red Flames’ waiting room, I also passed by the waiting room of the Blue Serpent.

‘I wonder if Lee Eun-Woo is in here.’

He said he had to go somewhere before me and left, so he must be in here. I walked past and entered The Red Flames’s waiting room.

“I’ve been waiting for you. Han Seo-ha.”

“Ms. Han Seo-Ha.”

Kim Ki-taek greets me happily.

“Tea or coffee?”

“Tea, please.”

“I already have coffee. Please have a cup.”

I don’t know why he even asked. It’s not that I couldn’t drink it, so I accepted the coffee.

“First of all, I want to say thank you to you…”

It was definitely a heavy preamble. I had heard it enough from the spokesperson, but it was different to hear it in person.

“If it weren’t for that decision, we’d all be dead. Oh, and Han Seo-ha might be alive, but there’s no telling when else we’d have had a chance to kill him. The Gate Research Institute under our guild’s control, even estimated that it will take us over three years to clear.”

A pretty accurate time frame.

“If they predicted three years to clear the gate, why did you even come in? I’m sure you didn’t plan on rotting in there for years.”

“I didn’t know that before I went in. It’s a study that came out after the fact.”

So he went in without knowing.

Clank. Kim Ki-Taek put down the coffee cup in his hand and continued.

“Originally, both me and Jeon Chung-woon were supposed to go in a little later, but after Han Seo-ha’s existence became known, we decided to go in on the basis that we could easily identify the boss monster with your help, though I realize now that it was an arrogant choice.”

Was that why Jeon Chung-Woon didn’t enter before the regression, but he did this time? Was it because of me? My presence created the expectation that the boss would reveal himself quickly, and Red Flames immediately jumped in at the bait.

Before the regression, the scouting team could have traveled for a week or a month and not found any traces of the boss monster, so they would have lacked the confidence.

They would have sent a clearance team, but they would have sent someone less important to the guild. Jeon Chung-Woon was Red Flames’ rookie, and he hadn’t come in until Hye-Won sacrificed herself for me. It actually left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Hye-won’s and my desperate survival prayers were all in the process of calculating gains and losses of the Large guilds. It was obvious, but it was still painful to hear.

“So it’s not an exaggeration to say that your decision saved tens of thousands of lives. Thousands of Hunters must have died in those three years, all of them precious children and parents of someone.”

I know. I’ve been there, because I was one of them, I was also an eyewitness to their cries.

“I’m sure you didn’t call me here to thank me.”

It’s not a memory I want to dredge up, so I change the subject.

“The point is, it’s a recruitment offer, and I know you don’t like Red Flames. Whatever happened at the gate, we know that we didn’t do a very good job of protecting you, so it’s understandable that you’d think that way.”

I realized that there seems to be a bit of a misunderstanding on their part, but I have no intention of joining the Red Flames, so I kept my mouth shut.

“However, Red Flames is one of the largest guilds in this country, and the benefits they offer to their hunters are endless. I’m sure you’ve heard of the free loan of class-specific items and the veto power to reject gates you don’t want to enter.”

Then he gets down to business. The “Conditions” of Red Flames are not bad. It’s a matter of atmosphere and tendencies. A hierarchical atmosphere, where guild loyalty is being tested, and a mentality that prioritizes the group over the individual. I can’t blame them, but it’s not to my taste.

‘Above all else, I need the freedom of action, and I can’t expect that from a large guild.’

Guilds are also organizations that are driven by profit. The more they have to offer, the more they plan to take something from me. Of course, there’s a saying that it’s better to do your dirty work inside a Great House.

Any guild or organization that tries to take advantage of its hunters is best served by a larger guild with better welfare and fewer legal restrictions.

‘If I’m going to find Theo’s Arrangements and gather information about Toluk, I won’t have the time to do any guild business, I need to be able to just put my name on a guild and walk through the gates and act autonomously, like before the regression.

Most guilds wouldn’t allow that. I was about to say no to Kim Ki-taek, who was making all sorts of offers. When suddenly, the door swung open.

“There you are.”

I immediately heard Lee Eun Woo’s voice. I turned around and saw the people from the Blue Serpent standing there. They were all dressed in matching blue clothes. To my shock, there were even familiar faces besides Lee Eun-Woo.

“Seoha-Noona!”

“Noona!”

It was the twins An Yu-soo and An Yu-ra. They were wearing blue scarves around their necks and holding bows with the symbol of the Blue Serpent.
