Chapter 45 Part 2: Duel

I had some experience with mages before. Toluk is a much more magically rich environment than Earth, so they had a larger army of mages than we did. It’s quite a challenge to fight a battle while dodging fireballs from the sky. There are a few tips I’ve learned from waging war against them.

First, don’t give the mages time to recharge or cast a spell.

Whiz! The wind whistles in my ears. I moved over Lee Eun-Woo’s head before he could cast another spell. He saw me fall with the Karambit in hand, he canceled the magic, and fled.

That’s a good judgment. If he hesitated for a moment, the Karambit would have touched his neck in an instant.

Second, don’t give the mage any chance to maintain their distance.

As soon as I landed on the ground, I ran towards Lee Eun-Woo. I have the advantage in agility. I intuited that Lee Eun-Woo couldn’t avoid me since he had his eyes closed as if concentrating on casting. Just as Lee Eun-Woo had read my first move, I had reason to read Lee Eun-Woo’s move.

‘You told me that you weren’t precise enough to hit a moving target.’

Then, of course, you won’t be lucky enough to hit only me, in close proximity.

I was convinced.

So I squeezed through the gap, pressed in close, grabbed his shoulders, spun him around, and stood behind him.

Poof! Electricity flashed menacingly. Of course I was faster!

“Haa….”

Lee Eun-Woo let out the breath that he was looking for. While my Gun, Noir was pointed right at his temple. If I pulled the trigger, he’d be dead. His hands trembled slightly at the imagination.

“…I lost.”

Lee Eun-Woo raised his arms lightly. It was a gesture of surrender. So I put the gun away.

『Ah! We have such a great match! It was a dazzling display of combat prowess on both sides, especially for a rookie!』

The emcee was babbling something, but I didn’t pay attention.

I looked up and saw a large crowd of people. People who appeared to be guild officials were looking at me and Lee Eun-Woo as if they were appraising us.

‘I may still be under your radar, but I won’t be after this.’

I clenched my fists. There was a faint hint of displeasure in my eyes, as if I had been played for a fool by Jeon Seo-Ho.

Of course, it would be difficult to deny the fact that he had a hand in this, even if it was more or less natural for the First Place and a Second Place recruit to go head-to-head in a duel, but it is hard to deny that his influence has gone in..

He might have wanted to paint a picture of Lee Eun-Woo winning in front of a huge crowd. He probably chose this place to showcase the gem he had honed for everyone to recognize.

From where he perch high above, He was staring at Lee Eun-Woo alone and was unconcerned, people around him, those who were anxious to talk to him, only watched.

He looked back at me as if he felt my gaze on him. When our eyes met, he smiled slightly. I didn’t bother to respond back.

I turned around and walked off the stage. I may have been victorious but I still felt an unpleasant sensation lingering in my hand.

Before the regression, Lee Eun-Woo and I had been at odds so many times over differences of military opinion, but he had nevertheless been my ally. The enemy was on Toluk, not on Earth, and it was not a pleasant experience to put a gun to the head of someone who had each other’s backs so many times.

The final event at the institute was the graduation ceremony. After proving their worth in tournaments and public classes, the graduation ceremony will allow each guild to give scouting offers to their favorite new recruits.

“As a …hunter, I will put the citizens first, and I will not let a single life go to waste.”

The oath is pretty boring. It’s a list of words that make sense in principle, but would never be honored at the gate. You will not sacrifice others for the greater good, you will give your body to defend a single life, and you will always be mindful of your noble calling to clear the gate… These oaths mean nothing to modern-day hunters. Hunters and gates have long since been reduced to mere money-makers. In the first or early second generation, it may have been a hunter’s job to clear a gate with great difficulty and risk his own life to save others, as there was no system in place and no clear idea of what a “System” was. It was literally like a shot in the dark.

“—I swear that I will always bear my name with dignity.”

After the oath taking, we will receive a gate access certificate in a luxurious case. At the Busan Water Distribution Company, which is run by former Hunters, you can even see one of these on the wall. To a doctor, it’s like a medical license. When everything is done, it’s finally the guild’s turn.

“Ms. Han Seo-ha. We are a distance dealer focused guild called ‘Kite’… We promise you the best treatment! You will be given the highest priority within the guild…”

“Can we talk to you for a second…!”

As expected, there were a lot of people trying to lure me in by any means possible. I frowned in annoyance, but there was no point in hating them because we would be in the same industry in the future.

“I’m sorry, I don’t have any thoughts of joining a guild at the moment.”

I’m just saying no, but they’re persistent.

“Seoha-ya!”

I heard a familiar voice through the crowd. I quickly turned my head and saw familiar faces. It was Hye-won and Jo Yeon-ho.

“Unnie!”

“Ugh, there are a lot of people, please make way. I’m passing by!”

“Ugh… Guild Leader!”

Hye-won somehow pushed her way through the crowd. Behind her, I could see a restless Jo Yeon-ho. He’s having a hard time even standing here.
