Chapter 46 Part 2:  Pseudo-Member

“What, you mean Netherworld?”

It wasn’t until after the ceremony that I got in touch with Kim Tae-Byung and Da-Jung again.

They seemed to question my choice somewhat, but didn’t say it out loud.

“I think I’ll go with ‘Big Dipper’ like I said.”

“Mmm… I have offers from several places…. Though I’m still holding off on making a decision.”

Unlike Kim Tae-byung, who was nonchalant, Da-jung looked very troubled.

“I’m thinking of becoming a tanker, but I don’t think it’s my best fit.”

She fiddles with the rim of her coffee cup as she speaks.

“It’s kind of pathetic, isn’t it? When I was at the academy, I thought, ‘I survived the gate, what’s wrong with me?‘ But after a while, I realized… being a tank isn’t just a one-hit wonder. You have to have the right amount of aggro, you have to have the right amount of chemistry with your coordinated damage dealer, and I don’t think I have any of that.”

It was a valid concern. As far as I could tell, she wasn’t exactly a budding tank. Tankers are a dirty job to begin with. They take a beating, and the psychological burden of knowing that if you go down, your teammates behind you will suffer. On top of that, the mortality rate is higher than other classes because you’re at the front of the line.

“That’s why I’m asking the guild that offered me the job that I’d consider it for a while longer. If I sign a contract, I’ll have to work for at least a few years, and I don’t know if I can do that.”

“I understand. I know it wasn’t easy when I first picked up the shield at the gate.”

Kim Tae-byung was the first to speak up.

“I’ve been meaning to talk to you about this for a long time.”

I hurried on.

“When we were at the gate, didn’t you tell me that you thought my knife was about to break?”

“Yeah? I did. I wanted to be a chef, so I’m used to seeing… knives.”

“I see. That’s good. If you think being a Tanker is going to be hard, have you ever thought about… Becoming a blacksmith?”

“Huh?”

She blinks, with wide-eyes, as if she’d never thought of it before.

“Blacksmith?”

“Of course, it’s a tough job, not as tough as a tanker, but it’s dangerous because you’re working with fire and iron.”

“Blacksmithing is a specialized profession. I’ve heard it’s only for talented people. I’m not sure if I should be good at it… Thanks for the advice, but…”

“Talented? With your observation alone. Your talent is enough.”

I said firmly. She looked even more unconvinced than I thought. In all my years as a Hunter, no one had ever predicted when a blade would break, not unless they checked it using the system themselves.

As I said, it’s a talent, and if I’d known it was going to break beforehand, I could have prepared for it and prevented an untimely death.

“…You really think so?”

“Yes.”

Da-jung’s eyes wiggled shallowly.

“If you don’t want to be a tanker, you’ll have to find another path anyway. There’s an excellent blacksmith I know, and while he doesn’t take apprentices… I have some tips.”

It was quite a famous story. It was the story of the blacksmith who beat the iron-headed blacksmith and became his apprentice. Eventually, the apprentice also became a famous blacksmith, and the story was told as a joke.

Perhaps, using that story, Da-jung could become an apprentice in a similar way to him.

“Really?”

“Yes. But what happens next is completely up to you, because he’s an extremely sharp person.”

At my words, Da-jung immediately looked troubled, but then she bit her lip tightly. She looked at me with a determined face.

“I’ll try. I’ve heard nothing bad from Seo-ha so far, and obviously, tanking and blacksmithing have overlapping stats, so it seems like the most efficient alternative for me to choose is becoming a blacksmith. I’ve always felt sorry for Seo-ha because it seems like I’ve always been so reliant on you, but… I’ll try really hard this time.”

I smiled slightly. It wasn’t long until the day would come when Song Da-Jung would realize her dazzling worth.

I still have somewhere to go. There was still some business that I had to attend to regarding the Red Flames and the Holy Grail, but it would be some time before the court case.

Since I joined the Netherworld guild, the ratio between the two guilds would need to be readjusted.

“Where are you going?”

Pyo Yeon-Won asked from behind me as I gathered my things. I had a lot to pack since I would probably be in the dungeon for over a week.

“I’m going to the dungeon.”

“The dungeon?”

“Yeah. I’m just a novice hunter.”

Of course, I’m only a beginner on the outside, but I’m pretty sure that Pyo Yeon-Won received some words and wanted to ask about it. Like why did I join the Netherworld Guild as a pseudo-member.

I don’t know if I should tell him about the Holy Grail.

“I don’t think there’s any reason for Noona to go to a dungeon… You said you had work to do, and you wouldn’t even go on a guild mission.”

“I did, and now this is what I have to do.”

Pyo Yeon-won had a confused look on his face, but I knew more clearly than anyone else.

My destination was the 「Blue Reed Dungeon」.

Thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of Hunters have entered and exited through the permanent Gate, and it long since been cleared.

Nowadays, the strategies to clear it have been studied in such detail that few hunters seek it out. Only the most novice hunters, or those at the very bottom of the ladder, who seek to acquire by-products, enter that dungeon.

Who knew such a thing could be found in the dungeon that they thought they knew best, it was also the one that was inherently darker under the hood.

It was in this Dungeon that another of 「Theo’s Arrangements」 was hidden.

A pretty big one at that. Before the regression, it was discovered by a lucky novice hunter who sold the materials he found there to the government and struck it rich.

“Take your time, I don’t mean to be presumptuous, but… You always seem to be in a hurry, for whatever reason.”

‘If I told you that the world would be a war zone in a few years, would you believe me?’

It was a silly thought.

“I’ll be back.”

I swallowed the unnecessary words.
