Chapter 49 Part 1:  Non-Wave Gate

“It's only natural, isn't it? The gate that I had planned so ambitiously was cut short by you, so I have no choice but to prepare a sequel if I want to improve the performance.”

So what he's saying is that because of me, the Yeonhwado Gate was cleared much earlier than originally planned, and he is preparing for the next Non-Wave Gate in a hurry?

‘Last I remember a non-wave gate will be opened so much later after the original Yeonhwado gate was cleared…!'

So everything's changed.

‘Because of me.'

‘I don't regret it, because so many people survived.'

If there is a change in destiny, there must be a change in the future.

‘I have to stop this non-wave gate, too.'

As I watched Theodore happily lick the drink off the lid, I made a plan. I realized that I had to grill him one way or another to get the information about the non-wave gate.

“Okay. So apparently you can't take my stuff back with you, then I'll let you try some of Earth's treats the next time I see you. How about that?”

“Earth's food culture, that sounds interesting!”

“Well, all I have with me right now is dried food, but if you tell me about that non-wave gate, I'll bring you something to eat in exactly one week, which isn't too bad for you.”

“Good, good!”

Theodore nodded enthusiastically, then paused.

“Mmmm… But for the time being, I am a living being in Toluk. I can't afford to have too many leaks, so if you divulge this information to others and start organizing a death squad, we can't proceed with this contract.”

“If you say so.”

I pretend to start at the grocery store. Maybe I can get some basic supplies and get moving.

“It would be more appropriate to use the Cerberus Oath, but since I don't have any with me, I might as well risk my life…. To experiment on Earthlings' sense of promise.”

“Don't worry about it. I'm not going to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs for this gate.”

‘You'll have to do more for the planet alive, Theodore.'

It's amazing how this man's turning to Earth's side changed the course of the war.

The humans have gone from being outmaneuvered to being able to fight back with his skills and understanding of the Toluk.

He is indispensable to the planet.

“Three months from now, Earth time. Location is… near 300 kilometers south of this gate. Range is about half of the Yeonhwado Gate?”

‘Half of the Yeonhwado Gate. That's big enough. If civilians get caught in it, the casualties will be significant.'

“The boss monster hasn't been assigned yet. The Red Devil was a special case before, so this time it will still come from the Alliance side, but I don't know exactly who it will be…”

That's enough. If it's someone on the Alliance side, there's a good chance I'd know who it was anyway.

“How long do you think it will take to clear?”

“That's the tricky part. Normally, I'd say at least three months, but… You've cleared something I thought would take three years in just four months, so the math doesn't add up, so I'm guessing three months as a normal estimate. There aren't that many gates that take 3 months to clear. At that point, they will be pretty large and quite difficult.”

“I don't think you'd rush a gate like that. Are you pulling ahead with your plan?”

“You're quick on the uptake, aren't you? I'm just trying to rush something that was originally planned for a while later. Now I have a gaping hole in my schedule and I'm going to have to work overtime again.”

I remembered that there was a gate that opened on that estimated area. It was a non-wave gate that occurred after the Yeonhwado, and while not as large as Yeonhwado, it caused a lot of casualties and raised awareness of non-wave gates.

This is known as the 「Black House Gate」. Black House Gates were gates that specialized in mental attacks rather than size or power.

It's trickier to clear than regular gates.

“… We have a deal, and I'll bring a lot of food next week.”

“Great! I'll look forward to it!”

Theodore replied with a wide grin, but unlike the first time, it didn't seem any cuter than before. I wondered if it's probably because I knew that it was a mad scientist in front of me.

I left some of my stuff in the room at the door for my next visit, and packed a few materials in my duffel bag.

I'll take it with me and look into it and see if it's worth presenting to the government. I'm not exactly fluent in Toluk either, so it might take me a while to decipher it.

“Did you enjoy exploring the dungeon?”

As I exited the dungeon, I was greeted formally by the ticket taker.

‘Enjoyed?'

‘There is no such thing as ‘Enjoy' in a dungeon.'

I attached the pin of the Netherworld Guild on my chest. It was proof that I, too, was one of its members, albeit in name only.

I had worn the pin before my regression as well.

“It looks good on you.”

Jo Yeon-ho said from the side.

“Really?”

Jo Yeon-ho was also unusually dressed in uniform. It was white with a pale navy blue accent.

Because of its white color, he decided not to wear it when he entered the gate, but due to its symbolism, it was often worn for official occasions.

It was custom-made to fit perfectly with a knotted knife attached to its white holster around the waist.

“I didn't think you'd be part of the Netherworld….”

He looked surprised, too. The first time we met, he was suspicious of me, then we competed, and now we're…. colleagues.
