Chapter 51 Part 1: Black House Gate

I was busy analyzing data, and my daily routine was repeating itself, almost every two weeks. It had been almost a month since I’d sat down at a café and had a drink with Kim Tae-byung.

As soon as I ordered an Americano and sat down, Kim Tae-byung made a sickening sound.

“Ugh—“.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, it’s just… I’ve been training a lot lately.”

His complexion was pretty bad.

“My muscles are sore and my whole body aches even when I stand still.”

It seems that something similar happened in the training center before…

I guess it’s just the inevitable fate of a rookie tanker.

“By the way, what about Da-jung?”

“In case you didn’t know, she’s gone underwater.”

“What do you mean?”

“I haven’t seen her since the last time we met. Maybe she went to visit the person Seo-ha told her about, but I haven’t heard from her since.”

Aha. I think I have a rough idea now. That Master is a Master for a reason— He was a Master Blacksmith and his requirements would be as painful as cutting bones.

Still, if we haven’t heard from Da-Jung, she must have succeeded in getting an apprenticeship.

“I’m sure she’s doing well, but how about you? How are you adjusting to your new Guild?”

I realized that the training must be very hard since Big Dipper is famous for being a knightly organization.

“I think that I was happier in the training center…”

“Is that so?”

“It’s just worse because I’m the only new recruit this time! The seniors all look like people who are crazy about training!… I think I’ll look similar to them after a while…. I was always a big guy, but I could feel that I had gotten bigger. Same height but bulkier?”

“Well, at least they’re not bad people.”

“That’s… I guess. I think it’s a bit excessive for them to put fish flesh and feed me with their spoon at my age right?”

That’s kind of gross.

“Just… Take care of yourself… for now.”

I tossed it off like it was nothing. It would be two months before the gate Theodore spoke of opened. So I have to prepare.

“Why are you so intent on analyzing the data?”

Theodore asked. I had been staying up late for about a week now, just analyzing the data.

My backpack was full of dry goods, and my desk was now dust-free. There was nothing I couldn’t reach because I was using it so much.

“You’ve been living here every day for about a month now,” He said to me, “Do humans on earth not need to see the sunlight?”

Of course not.

I considered dismissing it, but my attention span was slipping, so I put the pen down for a moment.

“You said the gate would open in two months.”

“Did I?”

“I don’t know what’s going to happen there, so I’m going to turn these materials over to the government before then.”

“And?”

Theodore doesn’t seem to understand since he’s a central figure in Toluk’s Hierarchical system.

“What do you think the chances are that I’ll ever see the data again once I send them over there?”

“Hardly? You said that you’re just a regular hunter.”

“Yeah. Probably not, which is why I’m making a back up.”

He finally nodded in understanding.

“I see. You’re plotting against the government!”

“Why do you say that?”

“Earthlings aren’t all idiots, so someone will interpret these materials, even if it’s not you, and if you’re going to risk your life to keep them, isn’t it because you’re plotting a rebellion?”

“No!”

A rebellion. What kind of bullsh–t is that?

“It’s not like that. It’s just that I want to be more prepared, and independent from the government. Maybe If I’m a high-ranking guild official or a high-ranking government official I might not have to do this, but right now I’m just a newbie hunter, so my information network is limited, and this is the only way I can get it out in advance.”

“I see. I understand what you’re saying.”

Theodore pointed behind me.

“You mean you’re going to interpret all that?”

Countless books lined the shelves. It was an overwhelming number. Theodore looked at me as if to confirm his conjecture,

“Wait? Really?”

But…… I don’t have a choice.

“Yes. All of it. In two months.”

Theodore looked fed up with me.

Yeah. It’s a contest to see who finishes first. It’s either me who gets knocked down or all those books gets smashed.

“Hello. This is Gate Labs. What brings you to…!”

I could see the desk clerk was surprised by the sheer volume of books on the cart. Or maybe he was surprised to see my appearance.

I managed to get my request out in a cracking voice.

“These are the items I found in the dungeon… They may be evidence of intelligent life within the Gate…”

“Uh, are you, uh, are you okay?”

I must have looked like sh–t. I hadn’t bathed or slept in weeks, so it was understandable.

“Yeah… I’m fine.”

“Oh, I don’t think so… Excuse me… You might need to go to the hospital first…”

“I need y—you to take this first.”

I held out the cart, and the employee quickly took the handle.

“There are some… things that are believed to be written… of a highly advanced civilization …Like clues…”

“Yes, yes, yes! You don’t have to tell me, I’ll pass it on!”

The receptionist interrupted me with a pale face.

That’s a good thing, because my head was already pounding from lack of sleep and it was hard to get my words out.

‘Now, I need to hurry up and get to the…. Gate….’

Today was the day.

“Excuse me, I need to write down your name…”

Today is the day the ‘Black House Gate’ opens. I’m not feeling well, but I managed to back up most of the materials with my own interpretations.

I guess it was a human victory for me.
