Chapter 53 Part 2:  Baek Mok-Ryeon

“Ms. Han Seo-ha. I had a hard time finding you.”

A woman with a short haircut smiled at me.

She had straight black hair and fierce eyes.

She was dressed in a shirt and jeans, with a white coat draped over her arms.

She was smiling, but her appearance was quite murderous.

A quick glance at the file she held in her hand, and I knew what to expect.

‘It’s mixed in. The page I interpreted was actually…’

No matter how frantic I was.

How can I make such a terrible mistake?

“My name is Baek Mok-Ryeon, I’m the deputy director of the Gate Research Institute.”

“I’m Han Seo-ha. I’m a Hunter.”

“I’ll ask you straight up.”

Ding.

She slammed the materials down on the table. It was my handwritten interpretation.

Even though an interpretation of mine mixed in, I still tried to pretend that I didn’t know anything about it.

That I just happened to get it from the dungeon, and that it was all tangled up.

“You wrote this interpretation, didn’t you?”

“No.”

All I can do now is back off.

Baek Mok-Ryeon arched an eyebrow. It looked like she was trying to scold me for pretending not to know. Even though It’s true.

“You didn’t think I’d be able to find you without writing your name down, did you? Technology is so good these days. CCTV was still able to capture an image of you.”

“I wasn’t able to write my name because I was in a hurry at the time… I wasn’t even trying to hide anything.”

“These materials were handed to me shortly after you brought them in, and this was sandwiched in between.”

She once again pointed a finger at the materials on the table.

Aha, Obviously I’m the only one who could have put this in there.

“Please answer me honestly, because this is a very important matter, and it could be the beginning of a tragedy for the entire human race.”

“That’s…”

Baek Mok-Ryeon said it with such a serious face, that my heart even wavered slightly.

I wondered if I could make an excuse and say that I had studied the Toluk language and wrote it down by myself, but…

I think that it is better to pretend not to know about anything at times like this.

“I really don’t know why it’s in there either.”

She wrinkled the bridge of her nose a little at my comment, then put on a calm expression as if to remind me when she frowned.

“… So be it.”

“Yes.”

“… I see. Then, I just need a contributor’s signature, because there’s a restriction on the usage of materials of unknown sources.”

“That’s possible.”

I wrote my name and hunter’s license number on the paper she held out.

As I was putting the Blue Reed gate as the discovery site, she suddenly muttered under her breath.

“As expected.”

I gripped the pen and scribbled, then nudged the paper forward.

She looked down at me, her face was expressionless, without any trace of a smile.

It was dark, almost murderous.

“It was you.”

She pointed to a corner of the document.

The handwriting looked exactly like the one I had just written.

I looked up in disbelief.

“Let’s say hello again. Nice to meet you, Ms. Han Seo-ha. It looks like we have a lot to talk about.”

A cold sweat immediately ran down my spine. Baek Mok-Ryeon glared at me murderously.

“So, because you’re a genius linguist, you’re able to understand this unfamiliar language and interpret it without any resources?”

As you can see my excuse was pretty lame. But there was nothing more to say.

I had a long history of fighting people from Toluk before I regressed, so I can’t say It was because I heard it somewhere before.

It stings to pretend to be a genius, but I can’t help it.

“I guess you could say that.”

“You’re a terrible liar.”

She can see right through me.

It’s quite scary.

Baek Mok-Ryeon stares at me with those piercing eyes, and then, let out a sigh.

“I don’t know what you’re hiding, but I know you’re not going to tell me.”

Exactly.

No amount of prodding here is going to get me to talk about my pre-regression, and if I do, she might send me to the psychiatric ward immediately.

“It’s alright… I came here today to say thank you in the first place.”

“What?”

It didn’t seem like it at all, so I asked in a confused manner.

I kept repeating her words, as if I hadn’t heard what Baek Mok-Ryeon said at all.

“I’m here to thank you for it.”

“Oh.. Yeah… It’s no big deal.”

“It’s no big deal? The whole academic world is in an uproar right now because of it. The whole theory of the gate is being shaken to its foundations right now.”

Sure.

All of the theories about the Gate were just that…

Theories.

Until the existence of Toluk was discovered. I think the most popular theory around this time was that the Gate was connected to a planet in another galaxy, so it’s not like we’re going out on a limb here.

“First and foremost, as you’ve probably realized by now, the content of this data… Is very dangerous.”

“I know.”

“That’s why I don’t want you to tell anyone, it’s top secret, and if you do, you’ll be hauled off to jail immediately.”

“That’s scary.”

I wasn’t going to tell anyone about it, but after hearing the warning first hand, I felt a little more cautious.

“Lastly,”

Baek Mok-Ryeon raised her eyes.

I could see the whites under it.

She even had a tear under the corner of her left eye. Baek Mok-Ryeon definitely had all the makings of a Feisty beauty.

“If there’s anything else that you want to say, come anytime.”

She held out a business card. I looked at it, and it read,

“Baek Mok-Ryeon, Deputy Director, National Gate Research institute.”

“I’ll pretend I don’t know anything, and listen. I won’t even ask where the information came from. If it’s of some significance, don’t hide it, just tell me.”

She was a person of keen senses.

She must have realized that I was hiding something more, and assumed that there was something I wasn’t telling her, which is why she made me such a radical offer.

She even gave me a business card with her direct phone number.

“Call me, I’ll be waiting.”

Cluck, Cluck.

Her black high-heeled shoes glided away, showing off her sleek figure.

She’s a unique person.

‘It’s been a while since I’ve been in contact with an office worker. Should I go?’

‘Maybe it’s because I’m always surrounded by Hunters, that everyone around me seemed to have the air of a combat fighter.’

Baek Mok-Ryeon is different.

She had a civilian air about her.

I’d heard of her before the regression.

I didn’t know her well, but she’d been studying the Toluk for a long time. She’s also the youngest director of the Gate Labs, and she’d made quite an uproar for a while.

I’d like to avoid contact with her as much as possible.
