Chapter 62 Part 1:  Hunter Disappearances

“What’s wrong with your face?”

“Huh?”

“Do you know something?”

“I’m not sure.”

It wasn’t clear who was behind it.

But it was clear that an unknown group was kidnapping Hunters from within the gates, and that they had someone helping them.

‘For the whole process to go this quietly, there’s definitely an inside job.’

That means there’s a mole inside the Blue Serpents.

And while everyone who was inside the gate could be the most likely candidate, it was extremely unlikely that it was this person.

Lee Eun-Woo, who had acted alongside me until the end was definitely an exception.

‘I wouldn’t have been able to figure out Park Hyun-Jong’s radius of action, and I wouldn’t have been able to make a connection between the disappearance, and him after leaving the boss’s room.’

So if I’m going to ask someone to cooperate with me, Lee Eun-Woo is probably my best option.

‘Can I trust Lee Eun-Woo?’

The chances are low, but not zero.

It was time to ask myself.

‘Will I be able to trust Lee Eun-Woo?’

“…A lot of similar things have been happening lately.”

‘Yes.’

My conclusion was— He cares about the Blue Serpents so much. No matter how much I dislike him in the past, he wouldn’t do anything that would sell out the people of the Blue Serpent.

He’d fought with me, backstabbed me, set me up, and led me into traps over the past decade, but his actions have always been directed towards one thing— The good of his agency.

For his Agency to take an advantage.

For his agency to make a profit.

It was all for that one clear, singular goal.

“It happened multiple times?”

“I haven’t figured anything out yet, but I’m just noticing the signs.”

I explained everything briefly.

I told him about the first time I’ve noticed the anomaly.

It was when I went to rescue Kim Tae-byung, and then to the similar cases that have been happening at multiple gates lately.

Lee Eun-Woo listened to my story with a serious expression.

“… It’s still hard to believe.”

“I’m sure it is, and I’m still investigating it.”

“I’ll look into it myself. It’s kind of creepy.”

A temporary alliance was then formed between us.

I took Lee Eun-Woo’s uninjured hand into mine.

It was the moment when a former enemy turned into a friend.

Now that I knew that the Blue Serpent was aware of the Hunter’s disappearance, at least I had something to tell Baek Mok-Ryeon.

My collaborative partner at the Gate Labs.

I could already recognize her from a mile away.

She was wearing a black turtle top and jeans, and that alone made her seem otherworldly to me.

There was an air of stability about her that was unique to non-hunters.

It was the kind of calm that comes from those who don’t make a living between the crossroads of life-and-death.

“There’s something I need to tell you.”

“That’s a good thing, because I had something I needed to tell you too.”

“What is it?”

Magnolia deferred to me, insisting that I speak first.

It didn’t really matter, so I complied.

“I realized that something similar happened again lately, and I couldn’t document it for security reasons, so I wanted to tell you in person.”

“Good, because I had similar reasons.”

She pulled out an envelope out of her bag.

The envelope was stamped with the word ‘Top Secret’ in red ink.

‘Do I have permission to take a look..?’

I looked at her inquiringly, but the document was already in front of me.

“It’s a copy.”

“Hmm.’

It seems like she’d read my mind.

“It doesn’t have a seal, so it’s not official, but don’t try to steal it.”

“I won’t.”

“Read it.”

After some pretty dire warnings, I finally opened the document.

‘This…’

It didn’t take me long to read it.

The implications of these few pages were quite simple.

“…The government is getting in the way.”

“That’s right, it’s ridiculous. Well, we’re a national institute, so we’re under the government.”

“Then… We must have been after something pretty huge.”

The paper was sent by the government.

It was a letter officially stating that all research about the ‘Disappearances inside the gate’ was to be ceased.

There are few reasons why a letter like this would come out of nowhere, especially with a top secret tag.

Baek Mok-Ryeon and I were inclined to think that something very suspicious was happening here.

Of course, it could be something pretty simple, or it could be more than that.

It could simply be a lack of budget or the inappropriateness of the subject matter, but as far as I can tell, Baek Mok-Ryeon’s research has been going pretty smoothly.

It started to distinguish the real dead from the missing, she was pretty well on her way to crack the thing.

“That’s why I’m out.”

“Are you serious?”

“For now.”

I stared at Baek Mok-ryeon’s face, but there was no disruption.

This kind of warning must be painful for someone who works for a public organization.

I’m sorry to lose a good colleague, but…

“… I respect your decision.”

“Thank you for your understanding. Then I have to go back to the lab, so if you’ll excuse me.”

With that, Baek Mok-Ryeon then poured a cup of coffee straight down her throat.

She gulped down the coffee, and drank it in one gulp.

She then put the cup down on the table.

“… Damn it.”

She then started spouting a bunch of curses.

“What?”

I don’t know if I heard it wrong, so I asked.

“I said f–ck it.”

“No. I wasn’t asking that..”

“I guess not.”

Baek Mok-Ryeon opened her eyes confidently.

Her cat-like eyes stared at me fiercely.

“I’ll back down ‘officially’.”

“Do you mean… you’re still going to join hands with us unofficially?”

It was a sudden change of attitude.

Baek Mok-Ryeon continued, while she was organizing the documents on the table and finishing them.

“I was thinking of pretending to listen to them, because they said that if I listened to them well, they’d grant me the position at the head of the Gate Labs, and let me research to my heart’s content, but that’s not going to work, because I feel like I’m going to die if I don’t get my questions answered right away.”

“Did the government offer that to you?”

“Yeah. I don’t know how far they’re involved.”

It was clear that it must be quite closely related to the political forces if it was enough for them to offer her the position of head of the research institute.

“Anyways. Don’t contact me until I do. I need to take a look at the situation first.”

“Yeah… Okay.”

I was a little dumbfounded, but for now, it was enough to know that Baek Mok-Ryeon hadn’t given up yet.
