Chapter .94

I walked back into the shelter. I noticed my fairies had moved on from healing Henry and were now working on one of the guards. Lua was also done with Zay and was now healing Jack, the leader of Diamond Sword.

“Zay,” I walked up to him to ask him about something. “Who set up this earth shelter?”

“It was Jack and Rayan.” Zay told me.

Rayan? Who is that? Probably another Diamond Sword member.

“Can it be taken down?” I asked. “I have a card that can help everyone heal, but we need sky access for it.”

I wanted to start with healing them with Rain of Mercy, before I pulled out the trouble that Monster Reborn will cause.

As I pulled Rain of Mercy out of my collection, I noticed I actually had two of them. I should keep better track of the cards I have. I could have just used it as soon as we got here. I’ll try to do better next time.

(I apologize for not reminding you, Master.) Laura told me.

(It’s fine. It’s not your fault.) I told her.

“We can take it down, but I think some might not like the idea. Being hurt and getting wet on top of it.” Zay told me.

I looked around at everyone. Everyone’s clothes were soaked. Except Zay’s and the ones of the person Lua is healing at the moment. I guess she dried them while at it.

“Are you sure they’ll care? Everyone seems soaked.” I said to Zay. “I guess we could just take the injured outside, or let Lua and my fairies exhaust all their mana.”

“I’ll ask them about it.” Zayaan answered.

“That’s fine.” I said to Zayaan as I handed him two cards. “I’ll need to go unsummon my dragons. I’ll be right back.” I said as an excuse. I still have some time before I need to do that, but I just want to leave the decision that comes next to other people.

I walked back out of the shelter, towards where I left my dragons. I hope they can make a decision by the time I go back there.

[Zayaan POV]

I looked at the card Brian handed to me before walking back out. It seems like he is no good with gore like this, as this is the second time he had to step outside. Can’t blame him too much. Based on everything I know about him, this might be one of the first times he’s seen multiple people hurt to this extent.

Rain of Mercy. Calls on a soothing rain that heals everyone hit by it.

So his cards can even do something like this. They really can do almost anything.

The first time I saw him using them, I thought they were a simple focus point for summoning magic. But the more I learned about Brian and his skill, the less I understood it. He has shown different capabilities of them, one after another.

I never got to use a card from him, but Alex and Lua both got the chance. They told us of the monsters they summoned with them and even how they could perfectly command the monster summoned. Sadly I didn’t get the chance as I was stuck at the adventurer’s guild, trying to act as the guild master.

The card in my hand felt a little strange. The front of it was a lot more coarse than the back. I slid my finger on the front of it, and revealed the second card under the first one. I thought he handed me only one card. The one in the back was covered in some smooth and clear cover. Is it glass?

I read the second card he handed me.

Monster Reborn. Can resurrect a dead person, as long as it has been less than 24 hours since their death. Does not heal wounds or any other damage.

… “What?!” I let out. This is not real. It cannot be real. Even in legends, only the first Saint could resurrect a dead person. And even then it’s told that she was only able to do it by borrowing the power of the Goddess.

“Zay?” Lua, who had heard my outburst, came over. She had done a good job at healing me, and was working on healing Rayan just before.

“Is something wrong?” Lua asked.

“... just look at this.” I said to her as I handed the card covered in glass over to her.

I saw Lua’s eyes widen as she read the card.

“Did Brian give this to you?” She asked quietly.

“Yes.” I answered. “But I’m not sure if he meant to. He gave me this as well.” I told Lua as I handed the Rain card over to her.

She took a quick look at it as well.

“Brian wouldn’t make a mistake like that. He must have given it to you because he knew he couldn’t make the choice.” Lua told me.

“Choice? What choice?” I asked.

“This card,” Lua becan. “We can only use it on one person.”

Only one? But we have five dead people. Rico, Kalem [The dead Diamond Sword member], Mask [One of the guards with Card Summoner] and the two people from Bakula company that I didn’t know.

… WHY? Why would you leave a decision like this to me? I was tempted to run after Brian and ask him, but he might not react in a way I want him to. If he really gave this card to me for a reason, I’ll need to make a decision on it. I’m the guild master of Alewatch. It’s my duty to make difficult decisions.

“... Lua, we will use this on Kalem.” I told my party member.

“Are you sure?” She asked while looking at Rico.

“Yes. That is the decision I’ve made as the guild master of Alewatch.” I told her. “I need you to heal him so he won’t die again when we use this.”

“As you wish. Guild Master.” Lua said to me as she walked over to the fallen Kalem. The small fairies that Brian had summoned also made their way over to him, almost like they understood what we were going to do.

[Brian POV]

(Master, please stop sulking like this.) Laura told me.

“No, I don’t think I will.” I told her.

I was laying on the palm of Blue-Eyes.

I honestly felt like I wanted to cry, but I couldn't. I never could in a situation like this. I just shut down and feel empty. But I can’t cry. I don’t know why. I don’t even know why I want to cry. I just feel like I should.

(Master, what happened here is not your fault.) Laura told me.

“I know, but I might have made it in time if I had just come here on my own as soon as I got the system mission.” I told her.

(But you didn’t even know where you should have gone, if you didn’t go to the guild. Had you taken off alone, there would have been a 50% chance of you flying in the wrong direction.)

“Laura, I know you are trying to help, but you can stop. I’ll recover from this with a little time.” I told her.

I know that, because that’s how it’s always been. I sulk for a bit and then just ignore the pain for the rest of forever.

I heard a low rumble from the direction of the earth shelter. I think they took it down. I was expecting them to do it faster.

Just a bit later, I felt some raindrops hitting my face. So here comes the Rain of Mercy.

It feels good on my skin. Like a soft massage with a high quality massage oil.

I just laid there for a little longer, until I heard someone behind me.

“I brought this back to you.” I heard the voice of Lua.

I got up to a sitting position. I’m sure the raindrops that collected on my face now flowed down like tears.

I received the card Lua handed back to me. The Monster Reborn was grayed out. So they used it. At least they didn’t let it go unused.

I almost want to ask who they used it on, but I know I’ll find out eventually. And I didn’t want to be involved with that decision. Any way you choose, someone will be unhappy with it.

A purple giant once said: “The hardest choices require the strongest wills.”

But I just don’t have the will to make that choice.
