Chapter 97 : Actual Application

“Umm… I don’t care which but can any of those magical beasts fight with my magical beast? I want to see the power of those magical beasts!”

“Huh? Umm…”

While I was relaxing with everyone, suddenly someone called for me. I turned my head around to see a man in his mid twenties with glasses and green hair saying something like that to me out of nowhere.

Err… Who is he…?

“Aaah, sorry. I was watching your summoning and I’m a contractor of several magical beasts myself so… I’m certain your magical beasts are very strong so I really want to try fighting against your magical beast!”

“….. I will have to refuse. I had just summoned them, you know? Also, I can’t agree to such a request out of the blue like that.”

Aah… He was one of the spectators. I didn’t know him because I had entrusted the guild to take care of the spectator list for me. But still, what was wrong with him? Saying something like that out of nowhere…

I planned on trying various things so I could see how Altair and the others could work well together during combat so when he suddenly said he wanted to try fighting with them…

I was annoyed with how haughty he was so I refused his request without any second thought.

“…. Huuuh? You must be scared of losing, huh? The acclaimed leader of Luce out of all people is running away because he’s scared of losing? I wonder what do you think other people will think of when they hear that?”

Maybe he didn’t expect I’d refuse him flat out. The haughty smile he had on became stiff. Without even hiding his irritation, he started to provoke me again.

“Haah… For the sake of Ren-kun’s honor, when you’re telling other people about what happened today, please also add that even after Ren-kun refused, you are still trying to force him to have a match with you even though Ren-kun had just summoned his magical beasts, alright?”

“Ugh….”

I didn’t know anything about being ‘acclaimed’ but Fer-san gave him a warning while sighing deeply. If a strange rumour was to circulate, it would be bad not only for me but for Luce’s reputation as well. That was why…Of course we needed to argue back, right?

“Well with all of these witnesses, of course he can’t lie about it”

“That’s right~ All of the people coming to watch is definitely going to talk about today’s summoning too~ You can’t tell a lie when there’s so many other witness like this~”

Sig-san and Chris-san said that. They were looking at him as if he was a fool for even thinking of spreading a lie about today’s occurrence.

Ah… Things are going to get troublesome if I let him be…

“We can’t have a match because you just summoned them, right? Then when can we do it?”

“Huh? Why are you talking as if Ren is going to have a match with you in the first place?”

Undeterred, he asked me again but Sig-san was quick to reply to him curtly. The vibe immediately turned sour. He and Sig-san quickly engaged in a battle of words. Both of them were proven to be quite strong-willed with their opinion.

『Hey, hey, Master? Why are we getting angry over such a guy like him? I can beat the crap out of him in one single blow if you let me, you know?』

『I’m down for it too.』

In the midst of all of this, these two beasts were talking nonchalantly, saying they were willing to have a match even though we were trying to prevent it in the first place. It was hard to see what Altair was doing since he was perching on my shoulder but I could easily look at Spica, who was still snuggling in my embrace. Spica was looking up to me, tilting his head to the side. His absolute cuteness was so destructive, I almost forgot about what was happening around me. With great reluctance, I suppressed my desire to smother myself within his fluffy fur and began to think about what I should do next.

“Hmm…”

『Ah! But can you give me some of your magic power first? I haven’t received any since I was summoned so my power is on the low side now! 』

While I was pondering, Altair suddenly said that.

“Ah, you’re right. Can you fight if I give you some magic power?”

『Of course!』

『Me too!』

Certainly. I had dripped some of my blood when I summoned them but I hadn’t given them any of my magic power directly. I would have to give it to them properly later.

“That’s why I told you, there’s no benefit for Ren to get involved with someone like you!!!”

“And I already told you since he refused me because he had just summoned them, I’m willing to wait! I mean, who gives you the right to refuse my request anyway? I’m asking him, not you!”

“I’m Ren’s fiancé! It is my duty to protect him from weirdos like you!”

The two of them had disregarded my existence completely. Though I do have to say this man was pretty brave to be able to snap back at Sig-san who was an A-rank adventurer. Well, I should try to have a test match before I go to the royal capital anyway. I didn’t know what kind of exam I’d need to go through but if it were a combat one and I had to do it without any prior practice beforehand I…

“Okay, okay, okay! Can you stop? Umm… For the time being… What’s your name again?”

I quickly interjected even though they were still arguing, asking them to cut it out already. Then I remembered I hadn’t gotten his name yet. So I went ahead and asked for his name before I told him my suggestion.

“Jude.”

“Jude-san, if we’re going to have a match, I have a few conditions you need to agree on first. I don’t want this to be a match between the magical beasts only. I want both me and Jude-san to be included in the match as well. As for the date, three days from now, that means on the 26th… And as for the location, this place would do…”

“For real?! I don’t mind either way!”

His expression, which had been looking stern because of his heated argument with Sig-san from before, immediately melted into a sparkling smile.

Oh. Seemed like he was actually younger than I had originally thought. His smile reminded me of an innocent kid.

“Eh?! Ren-chan, you don’t need to force yourself, you know?”

“That’s right, Ren-kun. There’s no merit in humouring this guy.”

“Right, right! You can just ignore someone like him.”

The three of them… Especially Sig-san, voiced their disapproval. But still… I didn’t expect I would find the sight of a bunch of guys in their mid twenties pouting at me looking so adorable…

I wonder if they would agree to me after I explained my reasoning properly to them?

“Umm… We’re going to the royal capital soon and we won’t know what kind of exam I’d get until the moment when I have to do it, right? The three of you had to do mock battles for the exam before, right? Even though I’m a support magician, I doubt the test will be that different from you guys. That was why I thought I needed to have a little combat practice beforehand.”

“I see…”

“You have a point there…”

“Well~ I’m sure those two kids won’t be defeated by someone like him so isn’t it fine?~”

When I explained my reasoning to them, they agreed with me easily. Chris-san also had put a great trust in Altair and Spica even though I had just summoned them not too long before. I didn’t really understand why myself but I guess it had something to do with their magic power?

“But can’t it be us?It doesn’t have to be with this guy…”

“Yes, it can’t. After all, the three of you won’t go serious on me, right?”

Ah, Sig-san agreed about the actual combat practice but he wasn’t convinced about the opponent. He didn’t want me to do it with Jude-san… His ears were flattened against his hair, his mouth pouting.

But… I knew the three of them would definitely go easy on me. Even if they said they wouldn’t, they would still do it unconsciously. That was why I flat out rejected them.

“T-that…”

“Sig, give it a rest will you? You know yourself that the three of us can’t attack Ren-chan seriously~”

“That’s right, Sig. A guy who doesn’t know when to give up is lame, you know?”

“Ugh…. Fine. Ren, don’t force yourself, ‘kay?”

“Yes. Please watch over me, okay?”

“Sure.”

Not one to give up easily, Sig-san was about to argue again but Chris-san and Fer-san chided him, making Sig-san give up on his attempt. I felt sorry when I looked at him looking dejected like that so I put Spica down and grabbed Sig-san’s left hand with both of my hands and asked him to watch over me. Sig-san still looked unconvinced but he was willing to drop the issue. Sig-san then proceeded to stroke my head tenderly with his free hand.

“Then we’re going to have a match on the 26th at 15.00! You’re fine with it, right?!”

“Eh? You already made a reservation….?”

“Yes! Before you changed your mind! Actually you don’t need to make a reservation but I thought if there are too many people, we won’t be able to go all out. That’s why I went and made a reservation first. I also said anyone who wants to watch the match is free to do so.”

“Haah… I don’t mind but…”

While I was talking with Chris-san and the others, Jude-san had gone to Tord-san to reserve the training ground for our match.

H-He’s so quick on his feet…

Which reminded me… Maybe it was a little bit too late to think about it but… Was he an adventurer? I wonder if it was safe to have a match with him when I didn’t know anything about him.

“Umm… I’m really sorry to be asking this at this point but… Jude-san, you are an adventurer too, right?”

“Hm… You’re half right, half wrong. I’m an adventurer and a researcher at the same time.”

“Researcher?”

I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to ask that this late in the game but since he was still standing here before me, it was better to ask him directly. But… A researcher? It was my first time meeting someone with that occupation in Alsar. I wonder what kind of subject he was researching about?

“That’s right. I’ve been researching summoned magical beasts. Like ─────────────────────────! ───────────?! ──────────────────────────. And things like that!”

“I-I see…”

Uwah! He’s so passionate about it!

He was so intense that I could barely listen to him. But… Now I understand… He was researching summoned magical beasts, of course he couldn’t help but be curious about Altair and Spica. Even now, his eyes might be looking at me but he was actually staring at Altair who was still remaining perched on my shoulder. Truly, there were all kinds of people in this world.

“Then I will see you again in three days! … Ahh, I wonder what I should study about? I wonder if he’d let me measure the length of his beasts…”

『Somehow, I don’t like this guy. 』

『I don’t like being with you too but when this guy is looking at me, I feel creeped out! He’s so disgusting! 』

Jude-san went back to the guild, he was still brimming with excitement. He probably thought I couldn’t hear him since he was muttering to himself but I could hear him clearly. At any rate, I don’t think I could let him measure either Altair or Spica since they seemed to hate Jude-san…
