Chapter 98: Let’s Give It a Try

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

After talking about my promise with Jude-san, I didn’t have anything left to do in the guild so I went to the carpenter workshop with the three of them to ask them to start working on our new house. While we were still in Laserna, they had been collecting the necessary materials and were ready to start working on it as soon as we gave the green light. They said the current craftsmen in the workshop were already enough for creating our new home.

“The house is really going to be built…”

I muttered to myself as I walked to the rental house the three of them residing at. Somehow even up until now, the idea of getting engaged, building my own home and getting married still didn’t seem very real to me…

“That’s right. Our house.”

Overhearing me, Fer-san, who was holding my hand, responded to my muttering with a smile.

“My cute Ren and our children…. And you guys as well. Just thinking about it makes me happy, don’t you guys think so too?”

Sig-san added. Hmm… Kids, huh…

“Isn’t it a little bit too early to be talking about children?~ Don’t you want to wait for at least a year before we start thinking about having children?~”

We did go all the way when we were at Laserna but ever since then, we had never done anything beyond some light touching. Well to be fair, we were still on our way back to Pedrell at that time.

To have children, we needed to get iam fruit but I heard the effect of the fruit only lasted for a week.

Does that mean we have to do it everyday for the whole week? I feel like I’m going to die if that was the case…

“Ren-kun? Is something the matter?”

“No! It’s nothing!”

Seemed like I had unconsciously wrinkled my eyebrows together, making Fer-san worried about me. Fer-san asked whether something was wrong while stroking my head gently. Flustered, I immediately said no to him.

After all, there’s no way I can just ask ‘do we have to do it for 7 days straight?’ right in front of him like that!

“Hey Ren-chan~ Just then~ Malik-san said it that he has a night shift today, right?~ That means, you can stay over tonight, right?~”

“Ah, yes. If it’s not too much trouble for everyone, I’d like to stay over.”

“There’s no way you’re gonna trouble us in any way possible? I can’t wait to eat Ren’s cooking today!”

When we were leaving the guild, Malik-san told me that I should stay over at their place for my own safety. Even though I used to stay at Malik-san’s house alone without any problem so far. When I told him that he was worrying too much, he told me he was being like this because I had gotten sexier or something along that line….

Ah well, I’m happy I get to stay over at their place anyway…

“Fufu~ I’m going to do my utmost best to meet everyone’s expectations then.”

The three of them had a big appetite so cooking for them felt worthwhile to do. We stopped by the market before we went home. On that day, I bought eggplants, tomatoes and various summer vegetables. I diced them all up before I cooked them all together into keema curry.

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

The next day… As I thought, having a match right away without any trial run didn’t sit well with me. We went out of Pedrell for caution’s sake to test the extent of these two beasts’ power. I rode on William’s back to go to a meadow about 30 minutes away from Pedrell.

“I think this place is good enough.”

Sig-san, who was riding on Oscar, stopped his track. He was the one leading us in the front.

“Yeah, yeah~ If it’s here, I’m sure we won’t get in trouble for destroying the surroundings a little~”

Chris-san surveyed the area before he put his arms on my waist so he could help me get down from William since we had been riding together.

“Now then. Ren-kun, please summon Altair and Spica.”

As far as my eyes could see, there was nothing in this meadow but a few trees growing here and there. The magical horse refused to let us ride them if the two magical beasts were with us so both Altair and Spica had to return to the ring.

“Altair, Spica, come out.”

『Here I come! Hey, hey~ As I thought, I want to stay with Master after all. Is it alright if I fly beside you on our way home? 』

『I’ll run beside Master too.』

“You two really don’t want to stay in the ring, huh…”

As soon as I called for their name, the two of them appeared with a puff of soft light emanating from the ring. They came out from the ring while still keeping their small size. Altair came hovering around me and Spica was rubbing his head against my leg as they both stated they wanted to run along with us on our way home. Ever since I summoned them, the two of them had been living with us without going into the ring even once. Maybe they really hated spending time in the ring that much?

“What’s wrong?~”

“Umm… It seems like the two of them don’t want to return to the ring. They want to run beside us on our way home….”

Realizing I was looking worried, Chris-san asked me what was wrong. At times like this, it was pretty inconvenient that only the contractor could speak with the summoned beast.

“I heard that being inside the ring feels comfortable for the magical beast and it’s a great place for them to recover but turns out they prefer to be by Ren-kun’s side than the ring, huh.”

Fer-san spoke my thoughts out loud, I had been wondering the same thing too.

“Well isn’t it fine? Though Oscar and the others didn’t want to let the magical beasts ride them, I don’t think Oscar and the others are scared of the magical beasts.”

Sig-san didn’t have any objections, he was okay with the beasts not returning to their ring on our way home.

『Right, right! The black one has been staring at me, he’s clearly looking down on us! He even sniggered!  The brown one is like “I will never let you ride on me!” while the white one only said “No…” and nothing else… Anyway these guys are not even the slightest bit afraid of us, a magical beast! 』

“I-Is that so…”

Apparently the magical horse and the magical beasts had a bad relationship but I didn’t expect they could actually converse with each other. I guess if anything happened, I could ask Altair and Spica to translate to me what the horses were talking about.

“Okay then you don’t have to return to the ring.  I won’t tell you to go into the ring for no reason. So if I do ask you, there will be a reason behind my action. That’s why I want you to just obediently go into the ring when I tell you to, okay?”

『Understood.』

『Roger that!』

Now that the good kids had given me their positive answer, it was time for me to focus on fulfilling today’s goal.

“Now then, let’s start with Altair shall we? You can breathe fire, right?”

『That’s right.』

“I’m not sure if it’s alright for him to go all out but…. Hmm… Can you breathe fire at about 30% of your power over there? Errr… That stone over there would do. That one, please.”

『30%…? ….. Here I go!~』

It could be dangerous if Altair showcased all of his power since we were surrounded with nothing but grasslands here so I asked him to only use 30% of his power. I told Altair to aim at a random big rock. The rock was about as big as me even. Altair shifted back into his original size before he blew out flames, easily engulfing the rock and melted the rock in no time. The fire spread, burning the surrounding grass to cinder in an instant. .

“Wai-?! Altair?! Huh? Altair’s fire can burn things other than the designated target?!”

I’m not mistaken, am I?! If I remembered correctly, everyone’s magic never affected anything beyond their targeted mark. That was why I specifically told Altair to aim on that rock…

“Seriously…? We’re going to burn the whole region to a crisp at this rate.”

“W-what should we do?!”

I believed I was not mistaken but just like what Sig-san had pointed out, the fire was spreading more and more.

“Haah… 【Aqua Rain】.”

“Wow! Fer-san! Thank you so much!”

With a deep sigh, Fer-san pointed his magic sword to the sky and cast a spell, making a local rainfall on the burning area. Thanks to Fer-san’s magic, the fire was gradually subsiding down. But… We became soaking wet too in the process.

『Umm, Master. I… Am I no good? I did as you told me and only used 30% but…  』

“Err… Thank you for doing exactly what I asked you to. You’re a good boy but Altair, can you make it so your magic will not burn anything but the target? After all, it’d be bad if your comrades get caught in your fire during combat, right?”

I praised Altair, who was floating in the air and looking somewhat dispirited. Then I asked him if it was possible for him to focus his magic on the target only. Altair did exactly like what I had told him to so I praised him for it. The things that happened were a little beyond my expectation though… The temperature must be over 1000ºC to be able melt a rock like that. I’d be a dead meat if I were hit by that flame!

『I think…. I can do it but… I’ve never done it before.』

“I see… Then let’s keep practicing from now on so you will be able to do it.”

『Okay…』

Ah… Even a bird like him could look all dejected like that…

I gently hugged Altair, who had already shifted back into his smaller form. It was clear to see his eyes were tinted with a hint of sadness. Even as I hugged him like this, I couldn’t feel any heat coming from his flaming wings. If he could control his fire unconsciously like this, surely with more practice he’d be able to control it well. Though I guess I had to forbid him from using any fire for a while… Since it could be dangerous…

“What did Altair say to you, Ren-kun?”

“He said he thinks he should be able to do it but he has never tried it before. I’ll have him practice controlling it from now on.”

“Usually, the magic cast by a magical beast never hits anything but the target either. But… Maybe because Altair is still a kid so he still can’t control his magic that well. Though I guess with more practice, I’m sure Altair will become a terrifying magical beast that will burn his enemy to ashes.”

What? Isn’t it a little too scary…?

But still… I see… I didn’t know the lifespan of a magical beast but since Fer-san Altair was still a kid, his young age might be the reason why he couldn’t control his magic thoroughly. I hadn’t given birth yet but I guess I had to start raising a kid already?

『I’m next, right? I’m gonna do it properly, okay?』

“Ah, yes. Err… Spica can control wind, right? Then can you try to attack that rock only? The rock on the opposite side of the previous rock.”

『Leave it to me. Gaooo!』

Spica said that before he returned to his original size and growled at the rock.

“Oh… He completely pulverized the rock…”

“You know~ If that rock was a person, that person would become a minced meat, won’t they?~”

As soon as Spica opened his mouth and growled at the rock, the rock was shattered into pieces. No, rather than saying it was shattered… It was completely pulverized… Chris-san also said some terrifying things… But of course, I couldn’t stop myself from praising Spica, who was looking at me with eyes that were begging to be praised.

“Spica, you’re so amazing. You really did it well! You’re so cool, Spica! But… Spica, Altair… For now, the two of you are prohibited from using both fire and wind, alright?”

First, praise! I moved Altair, who I had been hugging onto my shoulder and praised Spica while rubbing the base of his ears and the scruff of his neck!

『But why?! I did it properly! I only hit the rock, didn’t I?!』

“Yeah. You did great. Spica is really amazing! But Spica… That level of attack would kill a human instantly. There are times where we only need to catch the enemy so let’s try to learn to hold your power back a little, okay? You can’t use your wind power until then, alright?”

『I see… I understand. I… I will practice a lot!』

Spica didn’t look happy at first but when I told him the reason why, he was quick to accept my reasoning. Even if I told him to hold back a little, judging from his power, his attack must still be quite strong. I really needed to have him practice a lot…

“Ren… Your magical beasts…. Aren’t they too damn strong?”

“I’m sure they can kill a person easily… Or rather…. They’re way too strong, I’m a little confused on what I should do… Though I’m glad I had stated in my contract beforehand that they can’t attack anyone or anything without my permission.”

“For the day after tomorrow’s match, it’s best if Altair only uses his wings for attack and Spica with his fangs and claws.”

Fer-kun said.

“You’re right…”

Afterwards, the four of us watched Altair, who had regained his mood back, throw his knife-feathers into the trees. While Spica used his sharp fangs and claws to tore the rock apart… We then talked about my upcoming match with Jude-san before we went back home with Altair soaring gracefully through the sky and Spica kicked the ground powerfully as he leaped into a sprint.

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

And then, the day of my match with Jude-san came within a blink of an eye.

“Err… Altair, Spica? This afternoon we’re going to have a match against the green eyed glasses guy we had met before. Do you guys need more magic power just in case?”

『It hasn’t been five days yet, is it really alright?! Uwahhh!~ I’m so happy!! I will do my best for the match!!』

『Of course I can have more magic power too, right? 』

“Yeah, Spica too.”

Today I was sitting alone on a sofa in the living room with only my magic beasts accompanying me. As usual Altair was perching on my shoulder while Spica was lounging on my knees. My adorable magic beasts were bouncing happily when I mentioned the magic power. It seemed these positions had become a fixed position for them. How adorable~

On the night I had summoned these two childrens, I had given my magic power to them after we got to my house. I was a little hesitant to cut my own fingers but then I remembered I managed to do it just fine when I summoned them! So after encouraging myself, I finally nicked my right thumb with the dagger I always carried for self-defense. Perhaps from now on, I would be using this dagger for the sake of giving magic power to these two magical beasts.

I still felt a little afraid, waiting how much I was going to bleed but thankfully there were only a few drops dripping from the wound. Altair was sniffing the air excitedly while Spica was licking his lips ravenously.

I couldn’t feel any sensation when I was giving them my magic power and since I was supposed to give them my magic power every five days, it seemed there wouldn’t be any major problem from now on. I knew that magic powers were required to use magic but for them, magic power itself was a meal. They still needed magic power even if they didn’t use any magic.

『But still, that green guy. His eyes gave me the creep!』

『Yeah. Felt so disgusting. I really don’t like the way he kept on staring at me. Master, is it alright if I rough him up a little bit?』

Green guy… They meant Jude-san? Certainly Jude-san’s hair was green but such an adorable nickname like that didn’t suit a full-fledged adult like him. I chuckled a bit at the thought. But still… The two of them seemed to hate him quite a bit. I didn’t feel anything in particular but Jude-san was really staring at them with a gaze like that… It made sense for them to hate him.

Probably these two kids were going to keep yapping around when they saw him today but Jude-san wouldn’t be able to understand their words. Unless one of his magical beasts translated it for him, everything should be alright. But if Jude-san’s magical beasts did translate it for him…. Well, it should still be fine I guess.

“Umm… Let’s try to avoid inflicting any critical injury, okay? I hope my [Heal] would be enough. Ah… But we don’t actually know how strong Jude-san is…”

I told them that but actually I didn’t really know if we could afford to hold back a little since we didn’t know Jude-san’s real power. After my meeting with Jude-san, I had asked the people in the guild about Jude-san but the only information I actually heard was Jude-san’s rank. He was a B-rank adventurer. After all, most of the times when you were fighting during a quest, you wouldn’t be able to have any information regarding your opponent. So having no actual information about Jude-san gave me the opportunity to experience battle as if I was in a real quest.

『I’m going to beat the crap out of that guy so he’ll be scared of me!』

“I think he’s going to be more interested in you if you do that…”

Altair, who was still in his little parrot form, chirped excitedly. Though judging from Jude-san’s character when he talked about magical beasts, he’d be more interested in Altair if Altair had gone all out when fighting him.

“Ren, you’re leaving after eating lunch, right?”

“Ah, yes! I’m thinking of leaving the house at around 14.00 after lunch. Everyone is going to come with me too, right?”

Sig-san came into the room. He took a seat next to me and began to pat Spica’s head lightly before he asked me a question.

I had been worried whether Chris-san and the others could get along well with my magical beasts but after I introduced them as my future spouse and asked Altair and Spica to live cordially with them, all of them surprisingly able to fit right in easily. As I had thought, they still didn’t want to perch on my fiancés’s shoulder or snuggle on my fiancés’s lap but they were willing to let themselves be petted.

“Isn’t it obvious? Altair, Spica, if it’s against a guy like him, you can just slash him to pieces!”

『Leave it to me.』

『It will only take me a mere second to do that!』

“Good, good. Remember to wreck him thoroughly!”

I had seen Spica and Altair talking with my fiancés on the same pages like this. Especially with Sig-san and it made me wonder. Maybe they could actually understand each other’s language when they were like this. Or maybe it was because Sig-san was a beastman?

“You can’t be too thorough, alright?~ Two days ago, I saw your power when we were outside of the city…. If Altair and Spica did go all out, I’m afraid there will be casualties amongst the spectators as well…”

“That’s right… Altair, Spica. Ren-kun will hate you guys if you kill someone in vain, you know?”

『『What… 』』

If the two of them were to go on rampage, even if they didn’t use any magic, I was sure the damage would be immeasurable… I hoped they would do it moderately at least…

I wonder what will happen at our match tomorrow… Ah well! I guess I just need to do my best as their Master!
