初めての木版画の失敗で、木版画が絵本に向かないのではないかという結論に達したけれど、ここで諦めるわけにはいかない。わたしは帰り道でルッツと一緒に反省会を開く。

生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんの視力はぼんやりとしか見えていないと言われている。視力は脳の発達とも密接に関係しており、毎日様々な物を見ることで、少しずつ刺激を受けて発達していく。

生後1歳くらいになると大人と同じくらいの視力になってくるが、それまでは輪郭がぼやけていたり、淡い色は識別が難しかったりするらしい。

だから、0歳児から2歳くらいまでの赤ちゃん向けの絵本はシンプルな線でカラフルな原色が使われているし、書かれている言葉も簡単で何度もリフレインするものが好ましいと言われている。

ウチのテーブルの上には、失敗作の紙を綴ったメモ帳と煤鉛筆、石板や石筆が散乱している。母がいたら、「片付けなさい」と言われるに違いないけれど、今日は母もトゥーリもお仕事なので、怒る人はいない。

父の工具セットの中に真っ直ぐに線を引くための物差しがあったので、それを取り出してきて、線を引いていく。三角形や四角形を描いた後、紙の上に円を描こうとして、ピタリと止まった。コンパスが欲しい。

前に鉄筆を注文したわたしの顔を覚えていたようで、親方はわたしを見て軽く目を見張った。

図を見ながら、ヨハンが刃の付け替えについて、いくつか質問してくる。それに答えながら、わたしが細かい指示をすると、ヨハンの目が挑戦的に燃え始めた。どうやら職人魂に火を付けてしまったらしい。
「……へぇ。面白いな。この刃を簡単に交換できるというのが良い」

「ルッツ、マイン！」

「鍛冶工房のヨハンが午後に持ってまいりました。面白い仕事だったと、ヨハンがずいぶん興奮していましたよ」
ウチに帰ると、わたしは早速ヨハンに作ってもらったデザインカッターで、ステンシル定規を作ってみた。専用の下敷きマットがないので、板の上であまり力を入れないように切ってみたが、これは刃が痛むのが早そうだ。

「……絵本の型も厚紙を使って、ステンシルみたいにインクを塗ったら、わざわざ板を彫らなくていいんじゃない？ わぁ、わたしって天才？」

大きめの三角形を二つ上下に並べて、下の三角形に長方形をくっつけたもみの木っぽい図形とか、丸の輪郭に丸の目と半円の口と三角形の鼻とか、紐のコンパスもどきで六角形を作る時にやった花のような図形とか、思いつくままに楽しく描いた。

そして、カッターで切り抜いて、「もう終わりにしなさい」と家族に言われながら、カッターが届いた夜のうちに型を作り上げた。
「ルッツ、見て！ できたよ！」

怪訝そうなルッツが午後から工房で絵本作りを開始する。今回はステンシルの要領で刷毛を使って黒インクを塗っていく。細かい線のところは刷毛では紙がよれてしまうので、綿棒のように細い棒の先にぼろ布を巻き付けたもので、トントンと軽く押すようにしてインクを付けてもらった。
「わぁ、すごい！ できた！」

理解者がいないことが孤独だけれど、白黒絵本のページはできた。後は屏風のように広げて立てたいので、仕上がった紙を板に張り付けて、板に穴を開けて紐で繋いでいかなければならない。
