The Second Moon

Hey, this one’s clear too, Your Majesty.”

It was a hard, rigid voice.

The captain of the guard at the Cythern Palace had not slept properly for the past few nights.

The Crown Prince’s sudden arrival caused a disturbance but it also brought with it a general sense of nervousness. The captain of the Guard was killing himself trying to make sure the Crown Prince was not lacking anything.

After all, he was the Crown Prince Leshak Caliph.

He was the greatest Knight in the Empire and was the most exemplary monarch in history. He was the role model for all the Knights, he was who they dreamt of being.

His heart trembled whenever Leshak looked his way or even spoke to him.

“Oh, there’s no need to worry, now, please, just go in and rest.”

The Captain of the Cythern Guard believed that the boundary between the inside and outside of the castle could never be as perfect as it was today. Everything was in its place and all personnel was faithfully performing their duties.

He had never seen the guards of the capital at Crateas Palace, but he was convinced that even there, such perfection as this would be a rare thing. His heart was full of pride.

Now, if the Crown Prince would give just a word of praise, there would be nothing more to ask for.

“I heard that an outside wagon came through the castle gate a while ago. Was it inspected?”

Of course, it was!

“Yes, your Highness. It was a wagon from the Alton Company. I was informed that the Chief Officer of the Royal Castle had called for a delivery. After passing through the gates, the wagon went straight to the larder storage in the back.”

“Was it searched?”

“Uh, um……yes?”

The captain of the guard was caught off guard at first by him saying ‘searched’, and he paused.

“I asked if the wagon was searched.”

“Uh, it…… ”

The guard’s commander had a look of regret as his mind reeled.

The driver called out to them as usual, and a wagon had come from the place where they had always traded. Both the driver’s and the merchant’s faces were known to them. They didn’t even need to search it…..

“Did you?”

 ……it was as usual.

“I’m sorry, my Lord. I didn’t think…… ”

The Captain of the Guard muffled his words with a bewildered look on his face.

“Don’t let your guard down. We are at war now!”

It wasn’t a loud rebuke to embarrass him in front of his subordinates, but his matter-of-fact, flat tone made him feel even more embarrassed.

The Crown Prince of Ibeden was a person without blemishes or flaws, which sometimes made people doubt whether he was a human being at all.

He was really different from the others in appearance. No matter how far away you were, one could see it. If his face could not be considered perfection, he wondered if the word perfection should exist in the world.

Recently, strange rumors had been heard about him on the battlefield that did not suit the image of the Crown Prince of Ibeden, but most of them dismissed the awkward rumors as propaganda spread by the enemy.

Occasionally, the maids had heard ugly ghost stories about someone being tied up in the Prince’s bedroom, and it seemed that he was eating the meals sent up instead of the guard, but that couldn’t be true.

He is a fair, regimented, and noble monarch.

The next emperor of Ibeden was such a man.

You could tell just by looking at his steps patrolling the fortress walls. A knight with normal eyes could recognize it. Prince Leshak ‘s gait was not made in a day or two.

It was heavy, but it was silent. Even when it was light, there was never a gap.

A person who shouldn’t be there, never had a way of approaching him before he noticed them. The Prince’s steps would respond with alacrity regardless of what direction the surprise comes from.

Such steps were accumulated one by one only through long and hard training as well as through practical battles.

From how to kick away an opponent’s sword, to how to move one’s hand when not holding a sword, made it possible to know what kind of path the Crown Prince had walked as a knight.

It would be such a journey to even think of wanting to be like that person, it was heartbreaking.

“I will correct this, Your Majesty! Right now,”

The captain of the guard thought of running down immediately and taking a swing at the subordinates that were guarding the drawbridge.

“Nevermind. I will go.”

But the monarch of perfection and chastity seemed to think that he had to take care of it himself.

“No, this is all wrong, Your Majesty! I will,”

This generosity was something the subordinates couldn’t have imagined.

“I’m going down, so it’ll be faster for me to go.”

Leshak turned and tapped the Captain’s shoulder once.

“Take care of Cythern.”

“… …”

The captain of the guard was so moved that he could not even say a word.

It was an honor, his way of being was the heart of a knight, he did that and yet still he remembered his name instead.

There was so much to say but not a single word was uttered.

“Well, I,”

Belatedly he spoke to Leshak’s back,

“Ah…….”

The moon had just risen.

The evening had completely disappeared, and the great moon appeared dramatically, like magic.

It was the Bloody Moon.

The look on the guard’s face changed.

“The Bloody Moon has risen for the second day?”

Bloody Moon had a cycle. Nine times a year, sometimes ten or eleven times during the long winter years.

But, it was very rare that they appeared in succession like now. It was even recorded in history books.

At that time, it was said that something bad happened every time.

The successive blood moons were a symbol of bad luck and a bad omen.

“Abadd, you must search the wagon.”

Having said that, Prince Leshak suddenly jumped down the wall. There was a stairway to walk a little further away, but it seemed that there was no time to go there.

“Your Majesty! What’s going on?!”

The Captain of the Guard came running.

Prince Leshak must have sensed something ominous. The Captain of the Guard asked the Guardian Knights who were looking at Leshak’s empty spot in bewilderment.

“Where are you going, Your Majesty? Is there anything the guards need to know,”

“There’s nothing.”

Sidris said cutting off the captain’s words.

Abadd shouted towards Leshak’s back.

“Majesty! Are your ankles okay?”

Instead of an answer, a laugh was heard.

The captain of the guard thought for a moment that his ears had heard wrong.

“Oh, why are you……laughing?”

“Why not?”

Chief Knight Abadd muttered something. It was a very unpleasant sign.

“Why……what for?”

“Why? Is it because the Bloody Moon has risen?”

Karum chimed in.

“And two days in a row.”

The captain of the guard shook his head.

“No, so…… Why is he laughing when something ominous is about to happen?”

No Guardian Knight could answer that.

Abadd patted the Captain of the Guard on the shoulder, just like Leshak had done before.

“You’d better get used to the bloody moon days. Well, for a while.”

“……What?”

“Then do your best.”

The Guardian Knights strode down the stairs going down the fortress wall.

“It’s strange……”

The Captain of the Guard, who could not understand what was happening, he tilted his head as they made their way to the larder where Alton Company’s wagon was headed.

But there was only one conclusion he could think of.

“Maybe it means something bad might happen, so be prepared.”

He looked back again.

Looking down under the wall sharply like a hawk, the Captain of the Guard of Cythern Palace reiterated his vow.

He would protect this castle that the Crown Prince has entrusted to him with more strength than anyone else.

“Radan!”

–Bang!

The bedroom door opened hastily.

Only after hearing the loud noises reverberating across the thick walls did Leshak realize how hastily he’d acted.

Radan might have been sleeping.

“… …”

Fortunately, Radan was awake.

He was in a relaxed posture, sitting on a seat next to the window with his chin resting on the backrest. The manner of his head slightly tilted back showed that he was concentrating on something outside the window.

He turned my head to the sound of Leshak calling out “Radan”.

“Your Majesty.”

His blue eyes turned towards him, casting a beauty that he still couldn’t adapt to.

“I heard you went on patrol……”

Radan looked at him and blinked.

“Ah……. Perhaps you came back because of the moon?”

Leshak strode forward and grabbed Radan’s head.

“Ugh,”

Radan was forced to bury his face in Leshak’s chest.

The smooth cloth covered his eyes. The feel of Leshak beyond the clothes felt unbelievably good, but he felt a little uneasy because he couldn’t figure out why.

“…… Majesty?”

“Wait a moment. Stay like this.”

“… …”

It was a pity that when he could open his eyes, which he was not allowed except a few times a year, the time passed without saying a word.

Radan moved slowly and lifted his head that was held by Leshak. He could see the tip of his chin and the tip of his nose, and his dazzling silver hair could be seen clearly. He saw his eyes pouring his attention down on him.

The fact that he could see him with his own eyes seemed like something he would never get used to.

He was afraid that if he reached out his hand to touch him, like a beautiful dream, it would scatter in an instant.

“Majesty.”

Radan grabbed Leshak’s sleeve.

As Leshak answered, he added strength to the arm that was holding Radan. The black gaze that pierced Radan’s eyes immediately became a prison that trapped him.

“Don’t look out the window when you are alone.”

“… …”

Radan asked for the reason with his eyes.

“I think you’re going to run away again.”

“No…… I will not.”

“I know. I can’t endure without you.”

Leshak smiled bitterly and bowed his head.

If Radan knew just how far the thoughts had gone in his head just before, it would probably be very difficult.

Countless thoughts arose and disappeared in a short span of time.

Among them, the most common thought was that he should always keep Radan tied up.

It was the same with Radan. He was worried that if he turned my eyes away, without knowing when it would all disappear. Leshak was afraid of what Radan was thinking as he looked out the window.

He placed a kiss on Radan’s forehead. Whatever he was thinking, his lips were soft and respectful.

And soon became passionate.

Leshak’s lips passed over his forehead ran down the bridge of his nose and stayed on his lips as though that’s where they should have been.

“Ah……’

As their lips drew closer, Radan trembled a bit. Leshak saw a faint blush appear on Radan’s cheek.

“Radan.”

‘…… Yes, my Lord.”

His voice was low. He was trembling a little, but there was no sign of rejection.

So his heart trembled too.

Leshak had thought they would need some time. Radan may not have recovered yet from what he had done, in his body or mind.

Leshak swept Radan’s cheek with his finger. White fluff stood up along the path of his fingers.

“May I kiss you?”

Leshak asked in a whisper. He ran his finger over his lips this time. Radan’s lips moved softly into a smile. Leshak read the answer with his finger.

The answer was, “Yes, my Lord.”

Leshak lifted Radan. Radan looked perplexed, then grabbed his shoulder.

Leshak hugged Radan and pressed his lips together.

It felt strange to him that his feet didn’t touch the ground. The arm supporting his body was firm, but the fact that he had to hang completely from Leshak was embarrassing.

“I’m,”

Just when Radan licked his lips and spoke to Leshak…

Leshak’s tongue parted his lips. Radan felt the flesh filling his mouth.

It was soft, hot, and sweet.

It felt like the empty spaces in his body were being filled with Leshak.

Radan gave strength to the eyes that kept trying to close. He wanted to keep his eyes open for as long as time permitted.

It was hard to focus because Leshak was so close. Every time he let out his moist breaths, Radan’s eyelids trembled.

Still, Radan did not close his eyes.

Leshak suddenly took his lips away. As soon as their eyes met, he made a strange expression.

“This is a little awkward. Won’t you close your eyes?”

“Uh……”

Radan hesitated a little, then shook his head.

“Well, can I  not…… close my eyes?”

“Well……”

Leshak raised his eyebrows as though he were in trouble.

“I don’t want to say no, but I don’t really like it. May I ask what the reason is?”

Radan blinked.

“I don’t want to close them, my Lord.”

“Why?”

“It’s such a waste…….”

“What?”

“The time when the moon is out.”

A strange expression he wore turned into a friendly smile.

Leshak put Radan down on the chair and grabbed the armrests with both hands. Radan, along with the chair, appeared to be trapped in Leshak’s arms.

“It’s not that I don’t understand that.”

Leshak felt Radan’s lips. His gaze was connected to Radan’s eyes, and a finger was coveting his lips. It was like his finger was kissing him.

“But I think it’s better to close your eyes.”

Radan shook his head cautiously.

“As much as it should be…… It’s better to see you.”

“You can look when I’m not kissing you.”

“That’s …… because I don’t have much time,”

“The moon has risen again.”

Leshak leaned over and left a small kiss under Radan’s ear.

Radan shrugged his shoulders, his cheeks felt hot. His small reactions easily transferred to Leshak as well. He trembled as much as Radan, and as Radan heated up, he became hotter.

Still, Radan kept his eyes open.

“But…… It will take a long time for the next bloody moon to rise.”

Radan’s lips were slightly disheveled without regard to his blushing face

“I don’t know how many more times I will be able to see you.”

Leshak held onto Radan’s head. The gesture felt stern.

“You’re saying all kinds of exhausting things.”

“Your Majesty,”

“You will be by my side. Continuously, now and forever.”

At that, Radan shut his mouth. Anxiety came bolting from his lips.

Leshak wasn’t the only one who had a lot of thoughts.

Radan thought a lot about him, too. Things like his situation, the direction of the war, and Leshak’s position.

He struggled desperately within the limits of what he knew.

So he concluded that their time wouldn’t be too long.

The long war will end.

Kemened disappeared and he was no longer an assassin, but he was also not the Third Prince of the Ranadia Royal Family.

Later, Prince Leshak would become the Emperor of Ibeden.

Above all, they were a relationship bound by curses. There was no need for curses on the Emperor of the Ibeden.

Their relationship was no different from when they first met in the red alley of a floating city¹.

Radan will stay by Leshak’s side as long as Leshak permits him to, but the opposite was not a possibility. Radan wanted to stay with him for a long time, but it was impossible without Leshak’s permission.

Leshak was still like the candy that he had tasted only once.

The more he liked him, the more guilty he felt.

It was his sin to like him. Because of his love for him, members of the Kemened Royal Family, including Brother Laud, died.

His father’s body, whose stomach was slit open and whose intestines had poured out, was still floating on the surface of the memory in a decomposed state.

It was all his own fault.

There will come a day when he will have to pay the price for it all. The one thing Radan wished for, was that Leshak would not be entangled in it with him.

“I….. It’s fine for now, my Lord. Because can I watch you a lot……so,”

“Shut up, if you are going to speak such nonsense.”

The knuckles of the hand Leshak’s that gripped his head made cracking sounds. Radan thought that Leshak’s handsome face as he looked at him, somehow looked brokenhearted.

“You really make me want to tie you up.”

Leshak lowered his head and bit Radan’s lips.

He lost patience with the gentle kiss he had placed just before. Leshak grabbed Radan’s head tightly and gave him a strong, skillful kiss.

It was a kiss to cause chaos in Radan’s mind so that he wouldn’t think about the wrong things again.

Of course, he was thinking of a way to hold onto Radan.

Leshak never forgot that the cocky Amboian who claimed to be Radan’s fiancée was still roaming out there in some part of the Imperial territories.

Even if it was a mistake that Radan had made for a brief moment because he had lost his memory, it was by no means small. It meant that Radan could leave him at any time if he wanted to.

That was absolutely unacceptable!

More than shackles were needed to keep Radan bound to him. Even a human being who has never seen Radan should have no choice but to know that he belongs to him.
