20 – Engagement Party

Qi Yueran almost subconsciously closed his eyes. His eyelashes trembled so much that even his whole body was slightly trembling.

He Jian’s breath that fanned on his face felt very clear. Qi Yueran’s mind was blank for a moment. He felt that his face must be burning red. He couldn’t push away He Jian as the blood all over his body was concentrated on his head.

The two people were simply kissing that neither needed to go deep. It was simply touching and nothing more. Qi Yueran felt the soft touch on his lips. Due to the slight tremble of his body, their lips rubbed slightly without notice for a moment. Then, he felt a kind of electricity coursing through his back.

Qi Yueran still remembered that dream. The night before he came to the capital, he was awakened by a dream that made him unable to close his eyes for the whole night. He dreamt that he kissed his older brother. The kiss in the dream felt so unreal and it seemed far inferior to the gentle touch just now.

This kiss was very short. He Jian let go of Qi Yueran soon. On the surface, he still had a gentlemanly smile, but he was not calm at all.

It was an “absurd” thing to let He Jian kiss Qi Yueran. If it was not forced by the current situation, he would not have done so. However, just when the lips touched, the soft and slightly moist feeling was not as conflicting as he had imagined. On the contrary, it made his heartbeat accelerated and his blood boiled.

However, the busy engagement banquet would not let He Jian think about anything. After the ceremony, the two people would have to entertain all kinds of guests who come to congratulate them. It’s also a good opportunity to expand contacts.

Xia Hang was arranged together by He Jian because of the previous incident. Besides, there was no room for bargaining on the cooperation, so it was finalized just like that. Hence, the corporation partners could not be absent from the engagement party.

Xia Hang didn’t come alone. He also brought the second young master Xia Family, An Xun, together.

For those who were familiar with the Xia Family, they had heard of the name of Xia’s Second-shao. He and Xia Hang were twins. As for the two people’s different surnames, it’s a long story. During those years when the boss of Xia, Xia Yichen, and the young master of the An Family, An Junqian, were engaged for no more than a few years,  same-sex marriage law was officially passed. After they got married, their two children were surnamed Xia and An.

Xia Hang and An Xun didn’t look alike at all. An Xun looked more like An Junqian. An Junqian debuted an actor, so his appearance naturally didn’t need to be said. An Xun didn’t appear as dignified as Xia Hang. He looked younger and his facial features were soft, giving people a pleasant feeling. If people who didn’t know see him, most of them would think that he was an artist or model.

When He Jian and Qi Yueran passed by, Xia Hang was talking to a teenager who seemed to be no more than seventeen or eighteen years old. He Jian knew him. It was Lu Yuhan’s cousin. Contrary to expectation, he was somewhat similar to the former He Jian. As the youngest child in the family, his character was arrogant and despotic, unlikable.

Xia Hang saw them and immediately said with a smile, “There were too many people just now, so I didn’t have time to congratulate.”

“Boss Xia is too polite.” He Jian said.

Xia Hang pointed to An Xun beside him as he said, “I haven’t introduced him yet. This is my younger brother, An Xun. He doesn’t often walk around in the business circle so Third-shao might not know him.”

“I wish a harmonious union lasting a hundred years between He Third-shao and Qi Second-gongzi.” An Xun continued Xia Hang’s words. He came with Xia Hang today. While many people in the circle had heard of his name, few had seen him. Many people think that An Xun was a companion brought by Xia Hang or a sugar baby starlet.

As soon as Qi Yueran heard An Xun’s voice, he couldn’t help being a little surprised. He carefully looked at the young man, and then said with a smile, “Thank you very much.”

Qi Yueran had heard the voice of this young man.  At the end of the last dinner party, the strange ring tone from Boss Xia’s mobile phone was the voice of the young man.

Xia Hang said, “I haven’t apologized to Qi Second-gongzi face-to-face for last time’s matter, which has caused you trouble.”

Qi Yueran had already benefited from Xia Hang. How could he make him apologize again? Thus he said, “Boss Xia has handled the matter so prudently. It’s been a long time and I didn’t think of it anymore.”

While they were talking, Lu Zhuoyi was left in the cold. He seemed particularly impatient with their hypocritical politeness. However, as soon as he heard Qi Yueran’s speech, he could not help but look at the youngest gongzi of the Qi Family a few times. His appearance was not very eye-catching, but his voice was neither anxious nor gentle, which made him feel comfortable and pleasant to listen to.

Qi Yueran didn’t notice that someone was staring at him. He didn’t know Lu Zhuoyi very well, and he didn’t know the name of this person. However, He Jian noticed it. After talking with Xia Hang for a while, he found that the arrogant and despotic young master of the Lu Family was well-behaved standing on the side. But those eyes were not honest. They were practically nailed onto Qi Yueran’s body to the point that they couldn’t be pulled out.

Lu Zhuoyi was truly used to being arrogant. He looked at Qi Yueran without any discretion. He was the same kind of person as the former He Jian, who was not good in a relationship at all. He was the sort that let others flattered him. Naturally, he would neither be on the short stick nor apologize. At home, he would not make a conflict. But whenever he was outside, he would not put on a good face. He often earned a place and a girl1.

Lu Zhuoyi thought Qi Yueran had a good voice. Then he felt that the more he looked, the more he liked. He had heard about He Jian’s scandal. He felt that He Jian didn’t like the youngest master of the Qi Family. It was probably a business marriage. If he could take this person in his possession, it would be a hard slap to He Third-shao’s face. He was elated.

The current He Jian did not have such naive thought and had no interest in competing with a child who was not yet an adult. However, Lu Zhuoyi’s undisguised staring at Qi Yueran made him very unhappy.

He Jian reached out and took Qi Yueran’s hand. Qi Yueran, who was talking, paused for a moment, seemingly not understanding. He turned his head and looked at He Jian inquiringly.

He Jian didn’t turn his head and seemed to hold his hand naturally. He exchanged a few words with Xia Hang, “You guys continue to chat. I’ll take Xiao Ran to go first.”

He Jian’s original intention was to get rid of Lu Zhuoyi so that he wouldn’t look at Qi Yueran. He took Qi Yueran into the banquet hall. It happened that Master Qi had invited a lot of people from Quanlin that necessary courtesy was still required of them.

However, he didn’t expect that Lu Zhuoyi would do whatever he wanted. He went as far as following them upon seeing them leave.

Qi Yueran also felt strange. There was a teenager who kept following them not far away with an unknown motive.  He then asked, “Who is that man?”

“Lu Yuhan’s cousin, Lu Zhuoyi.” He Jian said and added, “He’s just a child who hasn’t grown up. The people of the Lu Family should be handled by my second brother. Don’t mind him.”

Qi Yueran was only asking and did not mind it much. Although the Lu Family’s people were powerful, Lu Zhuoyi was a child of sixteen or seventeen years old, and a few centimeters shorter than him.

He Jian didn’t want to talk more about Lu Zhuoyi, so he said, “Are you tired? Would you like to go upstairs and have a rest for a while?”

Qi Yueran shook his head. They held hands all the time that he felt a little uncomfortable. He wanted to pull it out, but he couldn’t even move an inch. He Jian held it tightly. He didn’t want his action caused an embarrassment, so he had to let it go.

While he was making small movements, he looked up and saw a familiar person. That man was chatting with others not far away. When their eyes collided, he immediately nodded at Qi Yueran with a smile before coming to their side.

“Congratulations on Xiao Ran and He Third-shao’s engagement.”

When He Jian heard that voice, his expression turned ugly. The person who came and spoke was exactly Wu Kai from the Quanlin’s Wu Family.

In any case, the Wu Family had prestige in Quanlin. For Qi Yueran’s engagement, Master Qi naturally invited all the businessmen who could be named in Quanlin. Wu Kai was one of them.

Qi Yueran formulaically said, “Thank you.”.

He Jian calmed down and said, “I didn’t expect Mister Wu to come too. I thought that the Wu Family wasn’t stable recently, and Mister Wu wouldn’t have time to leave.”

The Wu family was indeed in a very tense and unstable period. Wu Kai thought for a long time before deciding to come to the capital to attend the engagement banquet. His failure to get engaged with Qi Yueran was a big loss, but Qi Yueran was not the only one available. If he took a trip to the capital, he might be able to cultivate a little affection with Qi Yuexin and build a good relationship with the He Family.

Wu Kai laughed and said, “Xiao Ran is getting engaged, of course, I’ll come. Xiao Ran and I have known each other since we were children. We’re half childhood sweethearts? In the beginning, I even wanted to pursue Xiao Ran, but I let He Third-shao beat me to it. I’ve got to come to the engagement banquet and congratulate both of you in person.”

Wu Kai wanted to get close to He Jian. The meaning in his words was more or less flattering He Jian. Saying that he and Qi Yueran were childhood sweethearts and that he let He Jian beat him to it, didn’t that mean that He Jian was more charming than himself?

However, this flattery missed its target. How could He Jian withstand the matter of Qi Yueran being close with him? He sneered in his heart, but outwardly, he said with a sorry smile, “Is that right? I haven’t heard Xiao Ran mention it before.”

Qi Yueran heard He Jian’s tone was not very good. He knew that He Jian didn’t like Wu Kai, so he did not speak out.

Not getting a good face, Wu Kai couldn’t talk anymore. He was embarrassed. However, this was not the end…

Lu Zhuoyi, who had been following Qi Yueran all the time, heard it and got angry. Thinking that he rarely took a fancy to someone, he couldn’t say anything to He Jian, who beat him to it, but Wu Kai was something. That flattering tone of his was just like worming his way into being friendly.

“I think you are a toad wishing to eat swan meat2. Declaring as childhood sweethearts make others laughed out loud.” Lu Zhuoyi said scornfully. The young master had a big temper and didn’t let the other person save face at all.

T/N: Hi! Thank you for reading thus far. I’m very sorry to say I’m dropping this book. You might think I’m halfway through since the book only has 40 chapters (I thought that at first), but that’s not the case at all. In later chapters (>30), the words count per chapter is going to be 8000 to 15000. I can say that I’d been ¼  into the book. And I’ve long discovered I’m not very good with modern/entertainment setting T.T (also, I haven’t read the book at all)

Anyone who wants to pick it is welcomed.
