Chapter 9 – Subject

The task of students was to study, but most students did not like to learn, just as the task of adults was to work, but they did not like work.

Chi Tang was like “most people”, so when she heard about that topic, her first reaction was to refuse.

“I won’t listen.”

You Yu did not persuade her to study but said: “Then when do you want to study?”

When she said that, Chi Tang was a little surprised. Seeing that You Yu turned her head and continued to study on her own, Chi Tang was bored when she pulled the pen in her hand. She raised her head and looked around. This was a self-study class.

Some of her classmates were busy working on their homework, some were writing wrong questions on the test paper, some were quietly playing on their phones, and some were whispering, laughing, and listening to songs. Some people were troubled and others were happy. Everyone had their things to do.

But she was bored and had nothing to do. You Yu next to her was focused on her world as if the flow of time was different from everyone else.

Chi Tang took out her test paper and read it. The wrong answers were corrected, and only one answer was correct. She still didn’t know how the answer came out.

Their mathematics teacher lectures were useless. He seemed to think that every student has his IQ and had been swimming in the sea of mathematics for more than ten years like him. He thought that every problem was simple.

The young teacher didn’t understand that if he wanted his foolish students to understand, he needed to break it down. He didn’t seem to have that patience.

Perhaps the air of serious study nearby infected Chi Tang, she fought with the questions, flipping through the book and the extracurricular workbook, trying to find out the way of solving the questions.

However, the answer to the math problem does not depend on the student’s willpower. Chi Tang burned out after less than half an hour.

With the eraser in her hand, she stretched out her finger and flicked it. The soft eraser shot to You Yu’s side. You Yu picked up the eraser, looked at her, and asked again: ” Do you want help with the topic?”

Chi Tang: “Yes.”

You Yu leaned closer to her and took out her draft, as if she was already prepared for Chi Tang, “Then let’s start with this topic.”

Her voice was low but clear. The question that had caused Chi Tang trouble was solved in an instant. It was as if a fog was cleared and the answer was obtained through constant reasoning. The feeling is really good.

Chi Tang wrote down the answer, turned her head, and said to her deskmate: “If you were a teacher, you would be a good teacher.”

It was much more detailed than their math teacher, and You Yu could help her with things she didn’t understand.

“These questions, I couldn’t do anything before, but when you explained them, it seemed very simple.” Chi Tang.

You Yu turned her test paper over and said, “It may be like playing a game. The things we learned before are all fragments. Now we need to keep putting those fragments together and piece together different patterns.”

Chi Tang: “If that is the case, then my pieces must have been thrown away while walking, so I can’t put them together.”

You Yu: “No, just pick them up.”

Chi Tang suddenly tapped her desk with her pen, a little discouraged: “Simply put it!”

You Yu let her and pointed at another question, “Then let’s pick this piece first.”

She started the last additional topic.

Chi Tang looked at it and refused: “This question is too difficult.”

In the face of rejection, You Yu didn’t even blink her eyes, her hand was already on the draft: “He is not difficult, he is just a little cunning.”

Chi Tang listened resignedly, and was ready to not understand: “You said it as if it was a person.”

As a result, she understood, it was amazing. You Yu is amazing.

Halfway through the question, Chi Tang glanced at Zhao Rongrong in front of them and leaned back against their tableside, with their heads sideways, as if they were also listening to You Yu.

Chi Tang pressed You Yu’s pen cap with one finger, asked her to pause, and deliberately cleared her throat, “Which rabbit is listening to others with ears up.”

The chair dragged, and Zhao Rongrong leaned forward on the table and pretended to do his homework seriously. His ears were red with embarrassment.

Chi Tang hummed softly, propped her chin with one hand, and raised her eyebrows towards You Yu, meaning “Don’t let him listen.”

You Yu smiled and motioned to her to keep up with her work.

For all the next self-study classes, You Yu taught her questions. Not only were the wrong ones but Chi Tang also did the right questions. After finishing all the lectures, Chi Tang went through the test paper again and suddenly found out that she could get a full score, not the kind of full score that remembered the answer, but a full score that could be done correctly all over again.

What surprised Chi Tang, even more, was that she hadn’t felt irritable after studying for so long. That may be the most serious time she studied after graduating from kindergarten.

“Wasting so much of your time, it’s still useful.” Chi Tang folded the test paper and sandwiched it in the math book, not like the previous test papers, and stuffed them under the drawer.

You Yu was organizing her test papers for other subjects. Chi Tang’s test papers were always misplaced. You Yu became her teacher for a few classes and naturally had the right to help her deal with the test papers.

She shook her head when she heard this, “It’s not a waste of time.”

Chi Tang felt that she was comforting herself, “It’s not a waste of time? With what you already know, can you get any extra rewards?”

You Yu: “No, but if you feel happy doing something, it’s not a waste of time to spend.”

When she was studying alone, she was calm and contented. When Chi Tang was with her, she felt happy. You Yu don’t know why, maybe because Chi Tang was more interesting than her.

Chi Tang couldn’t understand: “What’s the joy of giving lectures? Are you addicted to being a teacher?”

You Yu did not answer. She pulled out her physics test paper: “Will you work on physics next?”

It was already between classes, and the bell rang three minutes ago. Chi Tang stood up: “Let me rest and go to the bathroom, teacher. We’ll talk about physics next time.”

She put her hands in the pockets of the school uniform, and walked away quickly, her half-length hair fluttered around her cheeks, and the half of her face facing the sun was bright and hazy, and she passed many smiling and fuzzy-faced classmates alone.

Entering the southern forest in autumn, there are more sunny days.
The ginkgo tree outside the window has yellowed leaves. During the rest of the study, Chi Tang liked to turn her head to look at this tree that was slowly turning golden. Its color is so brilliant that it attracts her eyes as if she were born to be attracted to brilliant things.

Chi Tang came back when the class bell rang. She returned to her place and sat down and placed her hand in front of You Yu and shook her sleeves.

A golden ginkgo leaf fell from her cuff, like a butterfly on the back of You Yu’s hand, and then slid down next to her pen tip.

“I just picked up a nice leaf.” Chi Tang said casually, “Do you want it?”

You Yu looked at her sideways, “Yes.”
