Chen Wentian received some news about a monster problem in the province so he was heading there to investigate. This province, this vast land and its people, were now his responsibility so he had to take care of occasional troubles that popped up. He wouldn't have to interfere in conflicts and wars between people, that would be a waste of time. But he was obliged to handle problems with monsters that ordinary people could not handle.
Monsters could be either classified as demons or beasts. Beasts are powerful versions of common animals while demons are types of monsters that specifically prey upon humans. While there were other races, these were the two most common groups in this region of the world and they both fell under the generic term of monster.
Monsters were able to cultivate and there were immortals among them as well. It was rare to find a monster immortal one this deep within human territory, within the wildlands all bets were off as it was common for human immortals to battle against monster immortals.
Chen Wentian had received information that demon infestation had gotten out of control at a nearby mountain range. They were a species called the jueyuan. They looked like misshapen monkeys and were about the size of humans but a lot stronger. They raided human settlements in the mountains and killed everyone except the young women.
Jueyuan would take the women back to their lair. They would force themselves on the women in order to give birth to more demon monkeys. Jueyuan grew fast and propagated even faster. A small number with a large breeding stock could turn into an army in a few years.
This all sounded horrible and disgusting but this was common behavior among demons. Unlike beasts, humans and demons were born to be enemies. Humans were the demons’ preferred prey. Humans would also exterminate demons upon sight.
Chen Wentian glided through the sky and arrived at a verdant mountain range. These mountains weren’t tall and each rounded peak was covered by ancient forest. This was called the Black Mist Mountains, for the thick mist that remained in the valleys even during the day. The request for help had come from a local cultivation sect, the Green Leaf Sect. They were an unremarkable sect that worked with the local villages to produce herbs beneficial to cultivation as well as medicine.
He flew around to survey the area. The request had taken a long time to reach him and he wasn’t sure what the situation was. He noticed that many villages were abandoned and there was a heavy aura of death in the air. Human corpses were plentiful in the foothills, some older than others. Some were fresh kills.
He followed the trail of destruction and eventually found the cultivation sect, actively being besieged by a horde of jueyuan. It seemed he was too late and the battle was already winding down. The sect was swarming with over a thousand demon monkeys and only one woman remained standing, fighting bitterly to the very end.
Chen Wentian didn't immediately go down to help save her. It was already an unsalvageable situation. The sect was as good as gone. She wore a glittering silver battle dress and fought with a slim long sword. Each of her swings was filled with fury and hatred and gritty determination. Her long black hair freely flowed behind her and blood splashed across her valiant, beautiful face. She would get up each time after being knocked down to cut down the next demon that jumped at her.
It was the heroic last stand of a fearless warrior. It was a captivating scene.
She fought on for a long time and refused to go down. In the end, the alpha demon monkey lost its patience and rushed at her. Its strength was too great, being at the 10th Level of the Spirit Initiate Realm. She tried to resist but she was already exhausted. Her sword was quickly knocked away and a punch knocked her unconscious.
The alpha demon grabbed her limp body and put her on its shoulder. It then barked out some orders in a demonic language. The battle over, the horde left, taking their prized human women with them.
Chen Wentian quickly extended his spiritual energy and placed an imprint on the woman’s body to track her. He then followed the horde as they retreated into the mountains. That brave woman was still unharmed so he didn’t need to do anything. If the demons wanted to do anything to her, he would instantly go down to stop them. He had to admit that he was attracted to her. Her talent, her beauty, her courage had moved him greatly. He still wanted to exterminate the jueyuan lair but if he had to choose between doing that and saving this beauty, it would be the latter without question.
The horde entered the deepest parts of the Black Mist Mountains. This part was totally wild, the trees and brush were thick. If he had not been following these demon monkeys, he wouldn’t have noticed them from the air.
After traveling for hours, they arrived in front of an inconspicuous cave entrance. The alpha demon went in first and the army of demon monkeys followed.
Chen Wentian descended and with a wave of his hand, wiped out the remaining jueyuan that were still outside with blue dragon flames. This kind of cave was exactly what he wanted. He would exterminate them all in one go.
He entered the cave and put up a spiritual energy barrier at the entrance so there would be no escape. He then drew a slim purple sword and started a killing spree.
