 Entering the War 1

Ryūsei Base, Air Corps West, Mu

At this base situated on Mu’s western sector, the military’s technology officer, Myrus, was explaining something to the other air corps.

“…Moving forward, as you all know, Japan’s Self-Defense Forces are deploying here at the request of the government and while it seems that there’s already been some interaction with the advance party, it is today that Japan’s fighters will arrive.”

After explanations from the government and military brass, reinforcement of parts of the Ryūsei base commenced. The construction work not only involved Mu’s construction staff, but also Japan’s, and eventually the SDF’s supply units arrived. Mu military personnel were dumbfounded upon seeing for the first time the huge aircraft known as the C-130, which seemed like a monster to them. However, according to Myrus, the ones coming today were aircraft without propellers.

“Sir Myrus, I have a question.”

“What is it?”

“According to the explanation we have received, we have orders to cooperate extensively with the Japanese army. I have no intention of being frugal with helping out friends that have come to help Mu and I will help to the fullest as ordered, but… does Japan really have so much power that the world’s 2nd strongest country, Mu, is doing so much in consideration of them?”

Since Japanese books have made it all the way to Mu, there were wealthy families that have taken to travelling to Japan to feel their national power for themselves. However, for ordinary citizens like soldiers whose only source of information are directives from the government and the occasional rumor, unless they were someone who has a vested interest in Japan, they couldn’t comprehend the national government going out of its way to take so much consideration of Japan.

“In terms of their morale and proficiency, I don’t know much about the Self-Defense Forces. However, on the tech side, I can say that the disparity between Japan and Mu is equivalent to the disparity between Mu and a country from outside the civilized areas.”

The military personnel shuddered in shock. The military tech disparity between Mu and a non-civilized country was distinct and clear and it was a hurdle that cannot be crossed; so much so that if they were to duke it out, the non-civilized country would never win. For the military’s and this generation’s brightest technology officer, Myrus, to assert that there was such a gap in between them…

“Do you think that they’re actually as stupidly strong as he says they are?”

A rookie pilot asks his comrade sitting next to him.

“Nah. They’re probably hyping it too much. It’s unthinkable for them, a science and tech nation like us, to possess aircraft that have that much of a disparity from ours.”

“I, too, honestly think it’s bull. I’m thankful for them entering the war on our side, but aren’t we deifying Japan a little too much?”

The senior aviator also agrees with the rookie’s opinion. Myrus continues his statement.

“For the arrival of the Japanese fighters today, there were some comments from Air Corps West to go welcome and escort them. However, since the Marin was too slow, so much so that if the Japanese fighters were to slow down to their speed there’s a possibility they would stall, I advised to have the idea canceled.”

What the hell did he just say? Even the top speed of Mu’s strongest Marin fighter is too slow?

Just as everyone was perplexed by the statement, they heard a loud thunderous clap, a sound which they’ve never heard of, as F-2 fighters entered the airspace above them.

“H-huh?!”

After they passed overhead, they conducted a slow left turn, aligning themselves with the runway. If a Japanese person were watching, they’d think it was the usual, slow pre-arrival turn… However…

“It’s… it’s fast!!”

The Mu military personnel were in mute amazement. The plane had an airframe bigger than the Marin’s and flew without a propeller, and it was more beautiful in comparison with the Holy Mirishial Empire’s floating ships of the heavens.

The F-2 fighters that had astonished the military personnel, as well as the F-15s landed one by one and were then being resupplied for the coming fight.

・・・

The airspace above Mu, East of Leifor, Gra Valkas Empire

Leesk of the 8th Army’s 2nd Aviation Squadron was conducting a patrol flight with 2 of his subordinates. Leesk’s squad were problem-characters, but their skills were widely acknowledged among their peers. Since this was their first ground invasion against a modern nation since their transfer to the new world, they were entrusted with scouting along the frontlines.

“Commander Gaoggel ordered us to fire on shady-looking folk without mercy. Am I right?”

One of the subordinates, Albesi, asks Leesk.

“Mhm.”

Their boss affirmed their orders silently. Although he is highly skilled, Albesi had a troublesome personality. Even in the battles immediately following their transfer, he was seen gunning down non-combatants with a smile on his face as if it were a game; a sight unworthy of a proud soldier of the empire. It was truly revolting.

They were currently around 50km east of the Mu town of Alue.

“Hoh! Found our next preeeeeeey~”

Without receiving an affirmative from his boss Leesk, Albesi began to dive.

・・・

Ynes, the daughter of the Pamell household, one of Mu’s aristocratic families, was riding their family motorcycle with her younger sister Meln towards the east.

They earnestly rode through the entirety of the single-lane road heading east where they could soon enter the hollow mountains. Viewed from afar, the hollow mountains look just like a normal mountain range, but getting closer reveals a formation full of hollow spaces that allow for the seamless passage of not only humans but also trucks and buses.

However, when looking from above, the formations look like branches of fossils that lie on top of one another, making it an ideal place to hide from an attack coming from the sky.

“Just a bit more… Just a little bit more…”

She understands that they could not stand a chance against an attack coming from the sky. Their parents, who had let them escape first, wanted them to be safe. Furthermore, she has to protect the life of her younger sister at all costs. She was burning with determination.

They eventually caught up with a car that had evacuated before them. She followed close to the rear of the car.

“Big sis, what’s that?”

Meln was pointing towards the sky. Ynes looks towards the direction at which she was pointing.

“!!!”

The clear silhouette of a Gra Valkas Empire plane was beginning to dive. Even worse, it was followed by 2 other planes.

It was clear to them that the plane that had dived first was aiming for them.

“Hold on tight, Meln!!!”

She slams the brakes on the rear wheel and rapidly changes her direction. After she had changed their direction, she released the brakes and opened the accelerator to its fullest. Raising a cloud of dust, the motorcycle turned. The sound of the diving plane can be heard throughout the vicinity with its high-pitched shrill sounding like the whistle of the reaper beckoning them to their deaths.

The following moment, a rain of bullets descended on where they used to be just mere moments before. The enemy’s tracer bullets hit the ground, kicking up a fierce cloud of dust from where the bullets landed. The car that was travelling ahead of Ynes was ripped into shreds and erupted in flames. Without being given the luxury to scream, those in the car died in an instant. Cold sweat ran down Ynes’s back.

“Tsk!!”

Opening the accelerator to its maximum, she beelines straight for the hollow mountains. With no shelter from attacks within their vicinity, she wanted to reach the hollow mountains before they could get hit.

“Ah crap!!!”

She sped up too fast and the front wheel was caught on a small pebble protruding from the road.

“Kyaa!!!”

The motorcycle tumbled over, kicking up a cloud of dust as the two sisters fell over. Young Meln seemed to be about to cry from pain, but the enemy wouldn’t give them the freedom to cry as much as they want. The enemy dived once again, aiming for her and her sister who didn’t have any chance of fighting them off.

“That’s it!!!”

Taking Meln with her, she ran towards the direction of the diving fighter. The fighter couldn’t afford to take an even steeper angle and so it pulled up. The sisters unknowingly pulled off an evasive maneuver taught by the Japanese to their children during World War 2 when being aimed at by fighters.

However, the enemy, hungry for its prey, was persistent and after climbing back up it turned its nose back towards the ground, slowly setting its sights towards the sisters.

“C-crap!!!”

They were being targeted by a fighter while running across the plains with a hopeless disparity in speed and devoid of any second chances in running away. The faces of their parents, who have given their lives to allow them to escape, came to mind… It seems that she couldn’t protect the both of them after all…

“Crap!! Crap!!”

The Gra Valkas Empire plane was clearly aiming for them. Blistering with the intent to kill, it was trying to hammer on them its immense power.

Tears welled up in her eyes. It was no use…

She then noticed that her body was trembling on its own.

“Waaaaaah!!!”

Panic set in. Screaming out loud, she took the hand of her younger sister and continued to run away. The sight of the nose of the enemy fighter slowly changing course to face them was horrifying. It was hopeless. They were too slow.

“H-he… help!!! Save us, dear god!!!”

She unknowingly screams out loud.

“Huh??”

Something that looked like an arrow of light passed overhead. It seemed to have stabbed through the source of her dread. After a shockwave momentarily shook the air, a huge explosion appeared.

The enemy’s wings broke like twigs as it was engulfed in flames, and after a short delay, the thundering sound of the explosion resounded across the area. The plane that was trying to attack them burst into flames and started to fall out of the sky. The plane fell horribly slow as embers emitted from all sorts of places on its airframe.

She couldn’t comprehend what had just happened.

From the perspective of the Gra Valkas Empire squadron

“What the?! What the fuck just happened?!”

Leesk was dumbfounded.

“A-Albesi’s plane was shot down!!!”

However, they didn’t receive any messages from Albesi.

Albesi’s plane suddenly just burst into shreds… The explosion, which was powerful enough to destroy the fighter’s wings, wasn’t from a breakdown and they concluded it was an enemy attack. He desperately surveyed the battlefield around him.

“T-there!!!”

The thing, which entered the battlefield flying low as if it were crawling on the surface, was flying far faster than any of the empire’s aircraft and it closed the distance at an unbelievable speed.

“So it was you!!”

Both of them took on their battle stances.

Leesk and his other subordinate swiveled around and began to dive.

“Ugh!!”

G-forces started to accumulate on his body, pushing it against the airframe of the fighter. The enemy has foolishly entered the battlefield at a low altitude. In air combat, whoever was higher in altitude had the advantage.

Pushing the engine to full throttle, the plane accelerated. The sounds of both the engine and the fierce gust of wind interweaved and the airframe shook violently.

“H-huh?!”

The enemy suddenly began to ascend. It fired something from the tip of one of its wings.

“What’s that?!”

The attack came too fast, striking the aircraft of his subordinate. In just a single moment, the aircraft of his subordinate blew up in flames. The enemy launched an attack from far outside the range of their machine guns.

In the blink of an eye, the enemy aircraft whisked under Leesk’s aircraft and into the sky above seemingly unaffected by the altitude. It climbed up into the heavens at speeds he had never seen in his life with an outrageous climbing power at an angle that is preposterously near vertical. As soon as it passed him, a thunderclap that sounded like something was tearing apart echoed throughout the vicinity. There weren’t any propellers on its airframe and a single flame was protruding outwards from behind it.

Just like that, the enemy aircraft that shot down two of the empire’s proud fighters in the blink of an eye disappeared into the blue skies above.

“I-it’s fast!!! Too fast!!!”

The difference in their movement capabilities were dimensions apart… It was a desperately hopeless inequality in performance. He was fully aware that this disproportion in their performance can never be filled with skill and techniques in maneuvering.

“How absurd, this monster!!!”

No one in the military knew that there existed such a monster. If they continue to proceed through their campaign, it’s certain that they will come to blows against that beast. He immediately takes out his radio.

“HQ!!! HQ!!!”

No response.

Speaking of which… He hasn’t received any radio contact from anyone for a while now.

“HQ!!! HQ!!! Fuck!!! Respond, damn it!!!”

He tried to contact headquarters countless times but no response came. Leesk then decided to confront the monster alone. The monster that had disappeared into the skies in a single moment immediately swiveled around and turned its nose towards him, firing something from the tip of one of its wings.

“Ah shiiiit!!!”

Leesk immediately tries to turn, but the arrow of light that the enemy had fired catches his aircraft in the blink of an eye.

The proximity fuze on an AAM-5 fired from a F-2 fighter activated as soon as it neared the Antares fighter, dispersing countless metallic fragments. Leesk parts from his consciousness being unable to feel the pain from the attack. The Antares fighter fell out of the sky as it was torn to shreds and engulfed in flames.

A F-2 fighter of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force spotted 3 enemy fighters trying to attack non-combatants in the airspace west of the town of Alue and after making contact, it shot down all 3 fighters.

・・・

Ynes, the daughter of the Pamell family who had given their lives to save her, stared at the sky in blank amazement. She was on the edge of desperation after being strafed by enemy fighters. It was at that point when suddenly, the fighter that was going to attack them exploded.

What just happened?…

They were looking up at the sky when suddenly, a blue something with a pointed shape passed above them, followed by a thunderous bang. That thing may have been the one that had saved the two of them. It produced an ear-piercing roar, tracing clouds from the tips of its wings and producing a thunderclap-like boom as it ascended into the sky at a speed they have never seen before.

On its way up, it promptly shot down another Gra Valkas Empire fighter and as soon as it turned around from climbing up, it shot down the last one.

“W-wow… I-is something like that even possible?”

She couldn’t take her eyes off the fighter that had just turned around. It was clearly not a fighter from Mu.

“!!!”

Red circles were painted onto the wings of the blue plane.

“A… a Japanese plane??”

They have recently been hearing the name of a certain country, Japan, with a lot of rumors floating around about how powerful they are. However, the rumors also say that they’re not strong enough against the Gra Valkas Empire.

She holds onto the hope that with the extraordinary strength she had witnessed, they would be able to strike back at the empire in a one-sided battle.

・・・

Imperial Army Air Corps command room, Leifor territory, Gra Valkas Empire

“What the hell’s going on?! Why haven’t the 3 aircraft on patrol returned yet?!”

The radar in the control tower suddenly went white with noise. They thought it was due to equipment malfunction, but they couldn’t contact any of their friendly aircraft currently in flight.

It was originally thought to be the effects of a periodic large magnetic storm. However, when the radar returned to normal, the signatures of the 3 Antares fighters that were patrolling the front lines were nowhere to be seen. There wasn’t any response when they tried to radio them and after 5 hours had passed, they were still yet to return to base. The place where they disappeared from radar was way past the border with Mu, and with the possibility that they were shot down due to an unknown attack, they couldn’t afford to send out a large search team.

“It may just be one of those large magnetic storms that sometimes happens…”

A magnetic storm was a phenomenon that they experienced seldomly after the Gra Valkas Empire transferred into the new world. They were powerful enough to render radar completely useless and make equipment unusable and so the empire has perceived them to be astronomical phenomena.

Japan, too, had bad luck with magnetic storms on this planet. One such particular storm caused one of the GSDF’s transport planes to fall from the sky. Due to this, they launched into space a solar observation satellite, enabling them to make predictions at a certain level.

“…That could be it!… It’s just bad luck… As soon as the prep work is done, send out an aerial search team to where they were last spotted!!”

“Affirmative!!!”

A slight suspicion arises from within the Gra Valkas Imperial Army.
