Chapter 3: Let's head to the frontier!!

I leave the city and continue on the road in a hippopotamus.

Kalin's new territory, my new workplace, will be in the northern outskirts of the country.

I have already informed Kalene that I will be in her service. She replied that she would welcome me with open arms.

"Kalene is overreacting every time, isn't she? What an ordinary alchemist like me can do, I don't think. Alchemists are just like handymen, Master Halhammer used to say. ....... Or, on the contrary, because it's a frontier area, you need people who can do everything in their own way, like a handyman.

I stretch wide on the hippopotamus.

The rhythmic footsteps of the hippopotamus.

The breeze feels good, full of spring sunshine.

It's been a while since I've been out of the house, as I've been busy with chores and trying to make ends meet on a shoestring budget for research. I used to come here often to collect materials.

It is only when I go out like this that I finally realize how stressed I was in that environment.

"At worst, I can get there in a few days if I drive Hippopo as fast as I can.

I tell Hippopo to get off the road. I lead Hippopo to a place where a group of medicinal herbs grow.

"I wonder if there are any herbs left in the herb garden by the lake..."

That's when it happened. The hippopotamus suddenly starts to wobble and flap its tail.

This is a signal that something is wrong.

I braced myself and instructed Hippopo to approach cautiously to the anomaly I sensed.

I keep in mind the possibility of injuries from the type of signal.

Then, just before the medicinal herbs, I find a fallen human being.

"Hippopo, be alert!" With a snap, I get out of the saddle and cautiously approach the fallen man, just to be sure.

If this were along the street, it could be a trap, some criminal posing as a wounded man. But in such an empty place, the possibility of such a trap is extremely small.

On the other hand, it is more frightening if something that caused the fallen person to fall is lurking around. It is possible that he/she hid in a moment of hesitation because of our approach.

However, we arrive at the side of the fallen person without any problem.

The fallen person was a woman dressed in a blue priest's uniform.

"How unusual. A priest knight. And this priest's uniform, I believe, is from the congregation of the Goddess of Vengeance ......."

I mutter and fall to my knees.

I put my hand on her shoulder and call out to check her consciousness.

Even through my clothes, I can feel the heat in the palm of my hand. It seems that the person has a fever. If you look closely, you can see that his translucent silver hair is moist with sweat.

"He is unconscious. I remember there was a herb for antifebrile in the herb garden up ahead. Does he know that? But we can't clear his airway or check his condition at this point. I'm going to have to turn him on his back."

I move the knight priest so that he is on his back, taking care to move his head as little as possible.

His face is revealed.

His white skin is flushed from the heat and distorted with pain. Still, her unspoiled beauty catches my attention.

However, a dark, tattoo-like mark has been carved into his face.

"Is this a curse!" I look at it and hastily pull out a scroll from my backpack.

"Unfold."

Scrolls that are fixed in the air. This time, the scroll spins around just above the forehead of the knight priestess lying on the ground.

"Transcription begins."

The scroll fixed on the forehead begins to glow.

It becomes a ray of light and falls onto the body of the lying priestess, slowly descending from the tip of her head to the tip of her toes.

I watch her closely.

Just as the light reaches her toes, she mutters to me.

"Show me."

Letters appear on the scroll. It is information about the woman lying in front of you. It is, of course, only a brief description. But it is enough to get a rough idea of her physical condition, including injuries.

"So, the face is a curse. It is not so urgent. But it is the type that transmits location information to the magician. He must have gone through a lot of trouble ......"

Scroll down to read.

"There it is! The cause of the fever, poison! A wound in the side, and that's where the poison got in. ...... is a very special kind of poison. This is the poison of the messenger ....... The potions I have are not compatible. I'll make a new one from the herbs in the cluster down the road.

I finish reading the scroll and tuck it into my backpack.

"Hippopo! Take care of this guy!" I told Hippopo, and with a bottle of potion in my hand, which I took out of my backpack, I ran toward the swarm.
