The living areas of the manor were well-decorated and luxurious, but Emily hardly noticed or cared. She removed the small glass bottle from around her neck, and placed it on the table in the center of the living room as soon as she entered the house.

"I'll light three sticks of incense for Jacob every day. Do you have a problem with that?" She said firmly.

Jack glared at the little glass bottle and answered, "No. You can do anything you want. Anything that makes you happy."

She considered for a moment and then said, "After all, he used to be your nominal uncle. As his nephew, can you light incense for him everyday, just as I'm doing? Could you do it?"

"Of course I can..." Jack replied reluctantly, and his face turned sour as if he was swallowing something greatly unpalatable, "No problem. I will do it, as you wish."

"Great." She smiled with pleasure and said, "Now, I want some incense."

Jack gawked at her and could not help but curl his lips into a smile. It was her first smile for him in days. She was so sweet that his heart melted and he felt like walking on air, treading on clouds.

'Alright. I'm willing to do anything for her, as long as she gives me such a smile everyday.

Light incense for Jacob? It's a piece of cake!'

"I want incense!" Her slightly raised voice reminded him again.

Jack snapped from his daydreaming and was disappointed to see that the smile on her face had faded away during his reverie. He turned on the maid, who was still waiting for their instructions and snapped, "Didn't you hear my honey's words? Fetch the incense for her."

"Oh, okay." The maid hadn't expected master Jack to agree to Emily's request to burn incense in the new house to commemorate a dead man, but she quickly responded and went to the utility room to look for the incense. Just a few minutes later, she returned with the incense in her hands.

The owner of the villa hadn't kept incense, so she had asked the old housekeeper for some of hers, and managed to finish the task breathlessly.

Emily opened the wrappings and took out three of the dark sticks. With a solemn and pious expression on her face, she lit them and bent down towards the small glass bottle three times, and then inserted them in the incense holder.

Then she looked at Jack, waiting for him to do likewise. Under her eyes, he didn't dare play tricks. Instead, he also bent down towards the bottle three times, thinking that fortunately it wasn't Jacob's real ashes, or it would upset him to do that everyday.

'Luckily, she doesn't have plans to hang Jacob's pictures in the living room.

Otherwise, it would drive me crazy, ' he thought snarkily.

However, think of the devi

She descended the stairs rapidly in soft velvet slippers and asked again, "What the hell were you going to do?"

"Slow down, slow down!" He was worried that she might slip in her rush down the stairs, and was about to step to her aid, but she had already reached the last step, and now stood imperiously in front of him.

"Were you going to touch Jacob's picture?" Emily's face fell as she said in a cold voice, "You wanted to break it?"

"No!" Jack quickly replied with a lie, "There was dust on it, and I just wanted to rub it off!"

"It's midnight, and you came here to dust off Jacob's picture?" she said sarcastically.

"I couldn't sleep, so I came downstairs to drink water. Then I saw the picture was dirty, so I wanted to cleaned it, since it means so much to you."

He returned flippantly. His lie seemed seamless, but it could not stand careful scrutiny.

Emily had no interest in furthering nonsense with him, so she pushed him aside and declared impatiently, "From now on, stay away from here except to light incense for him. I don't believe you anymore."

Jack felt like he had eaten the bitter pills, making him bilious all over.

Unfortunately, he could not express his real feelings. "Okay," he promised reluctantly.

He had become so immersed in the pleasure of being able to stay with Emily, that he was unaware she was slowly lowering his bottom line and now treated him like a servant.

"You'd better not do anything to this picture and ashes." She cast a cold look at him and her following words cut his heart to the quick, "If there was any damage to them, I don't know what I'd do, but I'm sure I'll lay all the blame on you.

I know I can't do anything to you, but I can do something to myself. If you want to see me hurting myself, you can have a try."
