Chapter 908: A Terrible Dream

Trust and loyalty were the essence of their friendship. David knew that he could count on Jacob to be there for him in his time of need because that was what a real friend would do.
After some time, David came back to Rita's bedroom again.
After Jacob got off the phone, Emily looked at him anxiously as she had vaguely heard Rita's and Nora's names. A hint of nervousness rippled over her voice.
"Jacob, did something happen to Rita?" Emily stared closely at Jacob as she clenched the chopsticks tightly between her fingers.
'There is no saying what Nora might pull on Rita next. I hope she and the baby are safe. If Nora tries to hurt Rita this time...' Emily did not dare to complete that thought.
"It is nothing serious. Rita fainted earlier, but she is expected to regain consciousness soon." Jacob did not keep the truth from Emily even though Emily's concern for Rita made him feel a bit envious.
'Oh, my dear. Why do you always have to care about other people so much? Last time, it was Ray, and now, Rita. When will you care about your husband?' Jacob decided to keep his displeasure to himself.
"Fainted? Rita fainted and you do not think it is serious enough to worry about it?" Emily put down her chopsticks and looked at Jacob disbelievingly.
Jacob's general lack of concern and apathy toward people was not new to Emily. Over the years, she had grown accustomed to it. But now that the person concerned was her best friend, Emily could not understand why Jacob did not want to divulge the whole story.
Meanwhile, Beryl sat there, not knowing what to say or do, curiously looking at her parents caught in a tense moment.
"Rita has David by her side. You cannot replace David in Rita's life forever. At some point, you will have to trust them to take care of themselves. It is me who you will be spending the rest of your life with. Shouldn't you be concerned about your own family?"
Jacob also put down his chopsticks and his stern face displayed a hint of gloom. He could not understand why Emily was arguing with him over a matter that concerned other people.
In truth, Emily knew what Jacob had meant, but she just could not help worrying about Rita. Emily would not be able to put her unsettled mind at ease until she saw Rita and made sure that she was safe and sound.
"Jacob, Rita is my friend, and this has nothing to do with Dav
ily, "Mommy, I want to have sweet and sour spare ribs too."
"Okay, sure. Rita, please take your sister home first. Daddy and I will drop by the market to buy you some ribs."
The local market was no place for two little girls, so Helen did not want her daughters to go there. Besides, it was only a few hundred meters away from their house, so she asked them to go home first.
"Okay." Rita took the keys from her mother and said goodbye to her parents, then walked toward their house with Michelle.
When they were passing by an alley, Michelle saw a vendor who was selling sugar-coated haws and she begged Rita to buy her one. Rita had no way to resist Michelle's request and anyway, she found some coins in her pocket, so she walked Michelle to the alley.
Just when Rita took the sugar-coated haws from the vendor, a blast of wind blew her to the ground all of a sudden. When she woke up, the first thing she saw were her parents' worried eyes. But Michelle and the vendor were no longer there.
"Rita, where is your sister?" Helen's voice trembled in panic and tears streamed down her face.
"Sister? Michelle? Where is Michelle?" Rita quickly looked around but found only her parents.
"What on earth happened?" Grant's blurry eyes met with Rita's puzzled ones and Rita could feel the anxiety in his voice.
Rita told her parents everything. Suddenly, Rita started to scream in her sleep, thrashing and panting.
"Michelle... Where are you?
Michelle... Where on earth are you? I miss you so much!" Rita yelled helplessly in her dream.
"Oh, no! Michelle!"
