Chapter 46

It’s been a few days since Kili started making farm tools.

The production of tools was admittedly not going very well.

Though I say that, there are a lot of abstract phrases in the alchemy book from the ancient magic civilization, which go like -“Add but a sliver of ingredients” or “submerse the ingredient”.

I’ve been trying to translate them, but doing that has proven to be more difficult than expected, causing numerous failures.

On the other hand, the hunting of monsters in the Demon Forest was proceeding smoothly, and it was about time the girls fought with multiple enemies at once.

Today as well we defeated monsters as always and came back to the village.

“I’m so grateful that snow doesn’t fall inside the forest.”

“Well, it is like a separate dimension after all.”

Snow had already accumulated inside the village, but that wasn’t the case inside the forest.

On the contrary, the insides of the Demon Forest are a lot warmer than outside, although it doesn’t reach spring levels.

Snow does fall on top of the forest, but I have no clue where that snow goes once it does.

Generally, it is said that the forest is an entire subspace of its own, but despite that you can see the snow falling from above the tree cover.

“I’m glad we got our hands on the amount we’d set out to get.”

“I’m sorry everyone, it’s because I haven’t been successful…”

Kili says apologetically.

They’ve only fought one monster these past few days.

On days like today, they don’t come across a single monster.

Recently, Kili had begun collecting trees that would be used as raw materials in farming tools.

The trees themselves grow all around, but once you cut one down, monsters start flocking around you.

This is said to happen due to the forest communicating to other monsters that something is harming it, but the reality of that isn’t clear.

For that reason, we look for fallen trees and thick branches to take home.

That has caused our efficiency to drop drastically.

“Kili shouldn’t blame herself. It’s those idiots who stole our farming tools that are bad.”

“Yup yup. Kili-nee has nothing to worry about!”

The four cheered Kili up.

In reality, the greywolves I used to defeat once every week, which came out for reconnaissance, had now increased their pace to once every day.

Aria, who always brought back every magic stone she found due to her poverty-mentality, now had more magic stones than the time when I came here.

Besides, the monsters inside the forest gave magic stones of higher concentration, than the same species found outside, allowing them to sell at a higher price.

Factoring that into our calculations, aren’t we already well in the green?

“At this rate, it might be better to abandon farming and instead keep delving into the forest to hunt monsters.”

“No, if you neglect agricultural practice in pioneering villages, you’d get removed from them.”

It’s true that agriculture may not be a fruitful activity, but regardless it is an important task given to pioneering villages for improving the agricultural productivity of the land.

If we ignore our main job here, we’d get driven out of the village no matter how high quality the stones we collect are.

If that happens, we’d never be able to freely enter the Demon Forest like we could till now.

“Wa-, wait I’m only joking!”

“Aria was, half serious.”

“Uu~”

Aria groans at being unable to refute Sui’s remark.

Though it’s not like I can’t understand her feelings either.

(Hmm? Is that a person loitering around the village?)

While we were talking, the outline of the village started becoming visible;

and on the outskirts, I could see the shadow of a person wandering about.

“? Lain, What’s wrong?”

As I halt, everyone else also stops in their tracks.

As the representative, Aria calls out to me.

“I thought I saw someone walking around the village.”

“Eh? Seriously? At this time of the year?”

That’s right.

There was no snow accumulating inside the Demon Forest, but it was knee-high on the outside.

No person would come to a frontier pioneering village at this time of the year. Normally that is.

Seeing me stare in the village’s direction grimly, Aria and the others take up an alert stance.

“For now, Aria and I will go call out to them. Is that fine?”

“Yeah, the rest of you should stay here and prepare to go into battle at any time, okay?”

“”””Roger!””””

Once decided, the rest followed quickly.

Sui raises her staff to be able to cast spells at any time, while Milia casts support magic on everyone.

Reno draws her dagger, and Kili prepares her bowgun.

“Let’s call out to them first.”

“Yeah.”

Aria and I gradually head towards the suspicious person wandering around the village.
