“Lu… Daren…” As soon as she opened her mouth, her throat felt dry and the sound of her call came out inaudible. She’d thought that this Qian Hodan pill would have at least helped her last for an hour, but just about a cup of tea [time] had passed and the miasma had entered again.

She did not know if he’d heard her voice but Lu Yi walked fast towards her; under the peach blossom tree, his expression was as pale as paper and it seemed to be unnatural…

Is he affected by the miasma poison? Jinxia thought in worry.

Lu Yi fastened his pace. When their distance was only about ten steps away, he suddenly broke a tree branch; the peach blossoms petals fell like raindrops, it looked amazingly beautiful.

“What kind of situation are we in? Does he still have the time to pick and plant flowers?”

Jinxia was speechless. The young master of a noble family was indeed like a prince. Was it possible that when he walked under the peach blossoms tree, he remembered his lover?

Before she could finish her thoughts, she saw the tree branch moving fast together with the heavy wind, turning into a sharp weapon and flying straight at her.

Perhaps due to the influence of the miasma poison, her mind was slow, and her reflexes were not as quick as she wanted them to be, hence, instead of avoiding the branch, she felt the situation a bit similar…

“Why does it feel familiar?”, she thought hard. Right that night on the ship, when the nine knot whip with its silver blade headed straight toward her throat, she had felt her life was over.

This time, the branch of the tree shot passed her ear, flower petals scraped her cheek, while a faint scent filled the air.

A thick fragrance of miasma lingered behind her, followed by the sound of a ‘hish-hish’, which made her hair stand up.

“Run, fast!”

She didn’t know where Lu Yi had appeared from. He quickly grabbed her arms and pulled her away.

Jinxia’s arms were gripped and she ran like she was flying. She did not forget to look back to find out what exactly was going on… What she saw  made her immediately stiffen: it was so shocking that, for a moment, she forgot where she was.

In front of her eyes was an unusually large and incredible red python, half of his body was standing upright. ‘Hish, hish, hish’, tucking his tongue in and out, a burst of red fog came out of his mouth. The tree branch from earlier that was sharp like iron was blocked by its body, but it didn’t hurt the snake at all, instead its body extended through the tree, creeping toward them.

While on the run, Jinxia breathed heavily and said in amazement, “What does that thing eat, why is it so big?!?”

Lu Yi did not answer her question, dragging her through the forest. Their road was stopped by the red python when they arrived at the right path; there was no way to turn back, in order to save their lives, they could only run deeper into the forest, but whether there were more terrible things waiting for them inside, no one knew.

Lu Yi tried to run left and right to find an opportunity to go around the python, but it was difficult, the giant snake was actually smart and his body very long: the python’s head and tail were blocking the way, moving agilely, trapping them both inside the forest.

After running for a while, Jinxia noticed something, she took a breath, and asked: “Daren… Don’t you think… He doesn’t seem to want to eat us, but… hold us in this place?”

“It found us.”

Lu Yi had begun to slow down and he found that the python was reducing its speed as well, making him very surprised. When he heard Jinxia saying that, he risked the danger and stopped their steps.

With the sudden stop, Jinxia leaned against the tree trunk, taking her breath. In fact, on normal days, this kind of run would be normal to her, but because she was poisoned with miasma, both  her legs were hurting and were stiff like iron.

Taking a deep breath to the point that the dantian* energy gathered in his palms, Lu Yi cautiously took a look at the python. Based on Jinxia’s words, it seemed to have no intention of eating them, since it had stopped two feet away, slowly shaking his body, ‘hish, hish, hish’, and spewing red fog from his mouth.

*[Dantian = Invisible energy channel from the tendon that passes through the limbs, TN]

At last Jinxia managed to normalize her breathing a little. Although her head was dizzy, and she was getting a little sick, she glared at the swaying red python that was still making the ‘hish, hish, hish’ sound. She sighed and tried to discuss the situation with the snake, “Is it because you know we’re government officials? Are you suffering from an injustice and wanting to report a case? If you want to report a case then say it, don’t just ‘hish, hish, hish’ like that. You say, you’re this big, you must have some divination in you, do you know how to speak the human language or not?”

Before she could finish her words, her mouth was stuffed with something.

“Don’t swallow it yet, let it melt, then slowly swallow it.” Lu Yi said with calm. “Don’t talk nonsense, I don’t think it wants to report anything, more like it wants to use the poison to knock us unconscious, then bring us back to its place.”

“Bring us back to its place? Become food for its kids and grandchildren?”

Jinxia’s face turned pale right away and she just realized that as the tongue of the snake came in and out, the red fog was getting thicker and thicker. The object in her mouth felt cold at first, then turned burning hot. This kind of pain suddenly triggered a familiar feeling.

It was him!

How could it be him?!?

She turned her head with a slow-motion to look at Lu Yi, not knowing how to open her mouth.

“Hiss-”

“Hiss–”

“Hiss–”

Listening with the utmost attention, they began to hear other hissing sounds approaching them. Lu Yi’s face changed all of a sudden, reaching out to pull Jinxia, in order to jump with her on a tree and step on the branches, leaning their bodies to look down.

The hish’s sounds grew louder and louder, from far and near, from vague to clear.

After seeing clearly where the animals were gathered, Jinxia’s legs trembled, she couldn’t help but murmur, “Father*… there are so many.”

*[Same as us saying oh my god, they say father, TN]

Whenever she looked, little red snakes slithered their bodies toward them. At a first glance, they looked like red waves, circling into small little circles, complementing with their colours the peach blossom trees.

“There are so many, neither of us is going to be enough to feed them.” Once again Jinxia felt the feeling ‘my life is over.’

Lu Yi gave her a cold stare, “Are you still worrying about them not eating enough?”

Those snakes could definitely climb up to the trees, at that time… Jinxia looked at Lu Yi. Although in her heart, there were many questions to ask, now it was not the right time to do so.

The miasma poison was getting thicker, spreading the stench to the nose; her head was getting dizzy, her eyes were blurred… She almost fell down. Luckily Lu Yi’s eyes were alerted, and his movements were fast, hence he immediately got a hold of her.

“Daren, I know your kung fu is good, if it wasn’t for me, you would’ve definitely been able to escape. Daren, you should go first, don’t worry about me.”

Her words were indeed true: Lu Yi’s kung fu was quite good and Jinxia was suffering from miasma; his hand was gripping on her, it was hard to avoid the weight that was pulling him down. If he didn’t care about her, he could’ve lifted his body up, jumped from one tree branch to another and been able to break out of the forest for sure.

After hearing her words, although his hand was still gripping on her, he frankly said while nodding his head, “That’s good, then you should take care of yourself.”

Not expecting him to agree so easily, Jinxia could only accept her fate, hence she gripped the sleeve of his robe and said “Let me leave a few last words. When you go back, Daren, can you tell my Master that this place here is very strange and dangerous and that he does not have to come here to collect my bones? Daren, there’s more… don’t forget, to let me enjoy the official salary.”

Lu Yi didn’t have the time to agree because a loud noise made by gongs and drums can be heard not too far away. ‘Bang, bang, bang’: the sound was very festive.

The little red snakes that were slithering toward them, quickly turned around when they heard the loud sounds, creeping  toward the sound as fast as they could. The red python that had been watching them the whole time, now he could not remain still, hence, his thick body shifted, with petals falling like rain for every peach blossom tree he passed by.

“These are the rescuers you sent?” Jinxia was confused.

Lu Yi shook his head, also not understanding the situation.

Jinxia looked at the direction where all the snakes were gathering. After a while, she let out a sigh of relief, and said all proud, “I knew it, this Master has a golden armor given by the deity, it changed my bad luck to good, there’s no reason to dive in a snake’s belly.”

Lu Yi narrowed his eyes at her, intending to jump down, but then he saw the group of snakes turning their heads and slithering back at them. Jinxia used all her power to fast climb back up the branches of the higher tree.

This time, not only the snakes, but also wild boars, rabbits, and many other animals came running, trying to save themselves from the terrible situation. There were sounds of snake hissing and the sound of screaming boars that kept shouting at each other, while wild rabbits and snake cubs were struggling to death.

Jinxia watched in awe when the python bit the boar’s head, seeing it entering its throat, slowly moving down, one inch after another. It seemed as if the python was suffocating.

Less than a burnt incense [time] later, the feast was over, the group of animals was getting farther away, no snakes were coming toward them anymore, even the python didn’t know where to burp.

After having patiently waited for everything to become calm and quiet, Lu Yi jumped down and Jinxia as well, but because her head was still dizzy, she lost her balance and fell down, right on her tailbone: it was so painful that she gritted her teeth. Feeling uncomfortable, she was about to rub it with her hand.

“Your kung fu-… Hurt?”

She nodded, awkward.

“With the protection of the golden armor, can it still hurt?” He sneered a little, lifted his foot and walked away.

Jinxia shrugged. She had just escaped from death, her mood was quite good,  she didn’t intend to fight with him. She quickly fastened her pace to catch up with him, then they both walked side by side and exited the forest.

As the medicine’s heat from the stomach spread to her hands and feet and the miasma poison in her body was disappearing bit by bit, Jinxia’s disorganized mind slowly became clearer. After becoming more conscious, she just remembered one very important thing.

“Daren!” She quickly walked in front of Lu Yi, nervously asking, “Yesterday, was Daren the one who helped me?”

Lu Yi stopped his movement, there was no visible expression on his face, neither of denial nor acknowledgment, “Why are you saying that?”

“The medicine you gave me was exactly the same as the one I took yesterday.”

“This medicine is called Ziyan, and it’s made and exists in the Palace. It wouldn’t be available at any market.” Lu Yi paused and looked at her, “But, as far as I know, there are no less than twenty people in JinYiWei who have this medicine.”

Jinxia was stunned, “Daren, you mean, the one who helped me yesterday was someone else, most likely a JinYiWei?”

“I did not say that.”

He said slowly.

“So, what do you mean then, Daren?” Jinxia didn’t understand.

“The person who helped you, it could be me or it could be someone else.” He glanced at her for a moment, “You are a constable of LiuShanmen, I don’t need to teach you how to investigate a case, but you can’t even investigate your own situation?”

Jinxia glared at him, really wanting to grab his neck and make him tell the truth right away.

‘Surely, it won’t be him, if it is, why won’t he admit it?’

She said to herself, ‘This Lu person likes to go against people the most, if there is an opportunity for him to make others owe him a debt, there’s no way he won’t admit, ugh, it was definitely not him!’

While still observing him, Jinxia heard Lu Yi’s voice again.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s yesterday or not. Today, I did save your life, don’t get mixed up and confused to recognize it.”

“Ah?!?” Jinxia was surprised, “But, but, but earlier you almost left me alone.”

Lu Yi calmly reminded her, “You must not forget, when the snake was chasing us from behind, who helped you escape death? If it weren’t for me, you’d already have been buried with that wild boar.”

Buried with the wild boar? In the snake’s belly? Jinxia tried to remember the scene.

But, what he said wasn’t wrong either.

Jinxia took a deep breath, clenched her hands into fists and politely said, “Daren is my life savior, Beizhe must remember this for a lifetime. In the next life, I will reciprocate this good deed, following you for a lifetime…”

Lu Yi interrupted her and said: “Don’t wait for the next life, just think about repaying me in this life.”

“Daren, in my eyes, you have always been a person who is very high, mighty, and difficult to reach. I thought you would say something like ‘small things, good work, don’t need to talk about it’.”

“Your life, do you think it’s a small matter?” Lu Yi asked back.

Jinxia could only answer: “No, of course not.”

“Old people have a saying ‘owing a favour is like a drop of water, repaying it is like a river’. Lu Yi walked closer to her, uttering word by word, “You, make sure to repay it.”

“Beizhe understands…”

Jinxia went to get her horse, she was lost in thought as she walked. Then she felt something was wrong, she pulled the horse back and stood in front of Lu Yi, “Daren, Beizhe still feels uneasy – the snake from the beginning did not plan to eat us, even if Daren did not take me away, it would have just spit out poison, so that thing… that thing… It can’t be considered as a life-saving favour, right?”

Lu Yi paused for a moment, then asked, “Do you know how much Ziyan pills are worth in the black market?”

Jinxia stood silent, her face was suddenly lit with a smile, she nodded and said: “Life saviour, please get on the horse, Beizhe will walk the horse for you.”

Lu Yi nodded, didn’t waste anymore words and jumped on the horse.

Jinxia walked the horse. In her heart, she was sighing. She didn’t expect to be indebted to him, if it were someone else, that would be fine, but this was Lu Yi. This person had a habit of making it difficult for others, and because of this favour, she didn’t know how many times he would make her jump into fire and water in the future. After a long sigh, she regained her spirit and said to herself, ‘It doesn’t matter what he wants, this master still has one life. Regardless of fire or water, I will use it to repay this favour, nothing to be afraid of…’
