Suddenly, a figure rushed out from the grass on their right side, but the Japanese pirates were so panicked that when they realized what was happening, it was already too late. Several flying weapons were thrown,  aiming at that person’s body, then a sword cut him down. It was with astonishment that they recognized him as one of their own: He was the comrade walking in the back row.

Right at this moment, Lu Yi jumped out, the blade of the sword was shiny as the moonlight, white as snow. The closest pirate to him didn’t have enough time to react, the sword moved as fast as a ghost, from left to right, and it slit two pirates’ throats down in a blink of an eye. One of them heavily injured his shoulder, his blood spurting out.

Flying weapons were thrown at him again, but  he was fast and used a pirate’s body as a shield, dodging from the left to the right. Afterward, he threw the body at the Japanese, borrowing the moment to stepback. Less than seventy steps behind him, there was an old willows forest. If he could reach that place, it would be an ideal hiding place, allowing him to face the enemies in a much easier way.

Ever since the Japanese pirates had entered the coastal land, all they had ever done was robbing, killing and slaughtering villages. Apart from avoiding the government, they didn’t have much to suffer. At that moment, the leader of the group noticed Lu Yi’s intention, his hands stretched out and shook, then three flying weapons were shot from his sleeves, and went straight towards the vital point behind his back.

“Chase!” The leader of the group yelled, unsheathing his sword and chasing after Lu Yi.

The others followed from behind with their long swords.

Once he reached the entrance of the willow trees forest, a loud roar followed. Lu Yi saw the fireworks up in the night sky in the northwest direction, their colour was shining brightly.

The mission had been completed faster than he expected, that girl seemed to have put all her efforts and energy into the task.

Lu Yi rushed inside the willow trees forest, his eyebrows were tightened but there was a smile on his mouth.

The old willows forest was beside the river and nobody knew how old it was. The trunk of any of the trees was so thick that it could not be hugged by a person. In winter, the forest would become gloomy and depressing, but now, during the spring, the willow branches were growing well, with buds blooming and swaying back and forth due to the night breeze.

The moonlight was crossing the willows forest, sometimes making it bright and sometimes dim. On the ground, the shadows of trees mingled with human ones.

A short and chubby impatient Japanese pirate pushed away the branches from his neck and ears, continuing to move forward with his long sword in one hand. Suddenly, he heard someone say in a Japanese voice.

“Idiot, he’s on your left!”

Upon hearing that, the chubby pirate turned to his left side right away. There was indeed a person. At the same time, a chill came down his spine, he looked down with a slow movement of his head, wondering since when his sword had been stuck into his own chest.

Lu Yi pulled out the sword and placed his hand on the branch of one old willow tree. It looked like he was resting, but fresh blood continued to spurt out from his injury, flowing through the clothes and onto the tree trunk.

The moonlight shone throughout the willow branches. On the surface of the river, there were dozens of ships sailing towards them, from their shape one could tell that they were government troop ships.

That was great, everything they had discussed was now ready.

Feeling that, little at a time, he was losing control of his own body, Lu Yi took a deep breath, stretched out his hand to hold his shoulder and pulled out the pocket knife that had penetrated into his flesh: the toxic poison in the weapon turned out to be spreading faster than he expected.

Two more Japanese pirates were walking towards him; looking at Lu Yi, they felt something was wrong. One of them took the lead with the sword while slashing randomly.

Lu Yi rapidly ducked to the side, he grabbed the pocket knife looking for an opening, then moved up and stabbed the knife in one of the pirates’ throat, forcing his fingers to press it down. The man stood there, his neck was slit open and he wasn’t able to make any sounds, only a weak grunt came out of his mouth. A moment later, he fell to the floor.

“He’s here! Over here!” The other pirate didn’t dare to charge toward, he could only yell out for his group.

In an instant, dozens of Japanese pirates came together, standing in different directions, all looking at Lu Yi.

Lu Yi glanced at the surface of the river again, the ships were still some distance away…

“Did you see the fireworks earlier? And all the boats in the river?” He said in a clear voice, “To be honest, you are already surrounded by soldiers. All of you tonight… no one can escape.”

Upon hearing this, their footsteps immediately stopped, some heads could not help but look at the river’s direction: it was true that dozens of ships were sailing towards them. The pirates were all bewildered.

The leader of the group spoke with confidence, exclaiming, “The soldiers of the Ming Dynasty are all made of tofu, do not be afraid, kill him first!”

Lu Yi laughed coldly, “In your heart, you are definitely afraid of me and don’t dare to come close. How dare you sacrifice their lives first? You think they don’t know?”

The pirates beside him had already drawn their swords and were ready to charge but, after hearing his words, they became reluctant in their hearts and stopped their movements.

Seeing the situation, the Japanese leader became angry, “He is trying to play us, trying to buy more time, don’t listen to him!”

Those words were indeed not wrong, Lu Yi was trying to stall them to buy some time, waiting for the soldiers’ ships to dock. He could feel that his arms and legs were starting to become numb, especially his legs, he felt like thousands of weights were anchoring them on the ground. If this group of pirates ganged up on him at the same time, he would definitely lose, a miscalculation could make him lose his life.

“We…” The Japanese leader saw that no one dared to come forward, and became angrier, “What a bunch of idiots!”

After saying that, he stepped towards Lu Yi with wide steps while wielding his sword. His eyes looked at him, “Shameless Chinese, die!” The Japanese sword rose high, facing Lu Yi, and slowly came down.

Lu Yi was already waiting for this moment, hence he spun around to dodge his attack. His body moved to the side, and the knife in his hand was placed on the leader’s neck accurately. After a pause, he glanced at the other followers with an icy stare, then he slit the man’s throat.

Blood spurted on the willow branch, a fishy smell rose.

“Who else wants to come up and die?”

He asked with casualness. Then he leaned against the tree behind him. He’d used all of his power to kill the leader, hoping it would scare the rest of them, and they would retreat. If one more person had advanced, he wouldn’t have known how to face them.

Surprisingly, there was a brave pirate, stepping towards with his sword while screaming.

Lu Yi took a deep breath, tried to hold on to his body, ready to do his best to withstand another fight… that person lunged half way and cried a terrible scream; the hand holding the sword froze in the air, then the sword fell down.

When the rest of the pirates saw this, they didn’t dare to come forward. Someone outside the willow trees forest first shouted in Japanese, “The soldiers are here! Get out!”

At that moment, they didn’t care about Lu Yi anymore, and they didn’t bother about their brothers’ corpses on the ground either, they all retreated.

Lu Yi let out a sigh of relief, his eyes fixed on the willow tree not far from him.

From the edge of the river rushing to the Lanxi Village, seeing the fireworks had been lit, the villagers had also started to evacuate. Jinxia was very worried about Lu Yi’s condition and, without resting, she returned to the riverbank. From the moment she’d started to grow up, Jinxia had never run this desperately. She had always felt that catching a thief was not enough to sell your life, but now she realized that she had been slacking in the past, and deeply regretted that she hadn’t spent more time practicing her kung fu, or else her speed would’ve been faster.

When she arrived at the riverbank, except for a few pirate corpses on the ground, she couldn’t spot Lu Yi, nor could she see any other pirates.

Jinxia squatted down to examine a dead man’s wounds. He died in one slash, other three corpses were clearly wounded by a sneak attack. Those skills should have belonged to Lu Yi.

In addition, there were many swords scattered in the grass… Seeing that Jinxia’s heart was immediately tight.

Examining the footprints closely, she headed towards the old willow trees forest. Without caring about anything, she followed the trail and entered the forest.

Once inside the forest, she didn’t see any shadows, but only smelled the faint scent of blood, filling the air amidst the silence.

“Lu Daren?” Jinxia  walked around slowly, her eyes searching everywhere, afraid to miss the shadow of a person among the willow trees, “Lu Daren, Lu Daren, are you here?”

The place was filled with silence, there was only the sound of willow trees being blown by the night breeze.

“Lu Daren!”

Then she saw the shadow of a person leaning against a tree, and hurriedly ran towards him. As she reached halfway, and was about to stretch out her hand, she saw a Japanese pirate, his hand was resting on the tree branch and did not move, his feet were covered in blood, his waist was bent and his head was down. It was clear that the injury he had suffered was a stab straight in the heart.

To her left  another pirate was lying on his back on the ground, his eyes were open, and half of a pocket knife was stuck in his neck. His arms and legs were making disjointed movements, she couldn’t tell whether he was dead or not.

Jinxia took a deep breath, took a few steps back and was about to turn around, when she felt  a gentle hand placed on her shoulder.

“I’m here.”

A low and familiar voice came from behind her.

She turned around at once and saw the clear eyebrows and his handsome face appearing from the dark trunk of a tree. He was still alive!

“Lu Daren!”

She quickly caught the hand that fell down, it was freezing cold. Jinxia’s heart tensed, then she looked at his pale face, “Are you hurt?!?”

“There’s a small cut on my back.” He whispered, his weak voice couldn’t hide his tiredness.

“Let’s see… There’s a knife…” Jinxia’s heart sank, “On top of that is poison, right? I… I know that after being exposed to this poison, it will paralyze your body. Do you feel that your movements are slowing down?”

Lu Yi nodded his head with difficulty.

“Then… Then, then it’s true. Don’t panic, it’s okay!” She was frantic to the point that she tripped over her own words, still trying to calm herself down.

Lu Yi looked at her, and said in a quiet voice,  “You calm down first.”

“Uh… uh… uh…” Jinxia took a deep breath, tried to focus, but felt that it was not enough. She took another deep breath, “Don’t worry, I… I, I am very calm! See, you don’t have to worry, this is nothing, this is nothing, nothing will happen…I, I… I… really! There must be antidotes on their body, I will go check!”

She leaned Lu Yi on the tree first, then jumped up to go and examine the pirates’ bodies.

“……” Lu Yi reached out to pull her, not holding onto her, “Be careful!”

“I know, I know, I know…”

Jinxia replied repeatedly and started to examine the body on the tree. Whether it were gold hair clips, silver combs, long necklace keys… All of them were thrown to the ground. Not finding the antidotes anywhere, she frantically said, “What are these useless things!”

Their clothes, belt, shoes, and even the knife holder were searched thoroughly, but there was no trace of antidotes.

She turned the pirate’s body who was lying on the ground. At that moment, she didn’t care whether he was alive or not. She searched in his shirt pocket, but only found some gold and silvers…

All of a sudden, the pirate that they thought dead opened his eyes and his mouth slightly.

“Be careful!”

Lu Yi was watching her on the side. He understood the situation with just a glance and, without wasting even one second, grabbed a handful of sand, throwing it at the pirate.

At the same time, something from above fired down.

These two things simultaneously headed to the pirate’s mouth.

At first, the pirate was about to attack Jinxia using a needle secretly placed in his mouth but, before the needle could come out, his mouth was already filled with soil, together with another object, making him choke to the point he couldn’t breathe. He died on the spot.

Jinxia was stunned for a moment, picked up the object and examined it: it was a chicken leg.

“Uncle!” She raised her head and shouted, anxious, “Don’t hide anymore!”

From the top of the nearest tree came the sound of laughter, followed by the shadow of a person jumping down lightly. Judging from his jump, Lu Yi knew without a doubt that that person’s kung fu was very high, not beneath him. Using the moonlight to see his shabby clothes and the half white hair, it turned out to be a lowly beggar.

“Uncle, a life is at stake, come here, hurry up!” Jinxia called out for him, panicked, “A flying weapon hit him, it’s poisonous.”

The beggar uncle squatted halfway, squinted at Lu Yi and asked, “You are in such a hurry. Is this your man?”

“This is your grandson!”

Jinxia irritatedly corrected him.

Lu Yi looked at the beggar uncle and smiled a little, “Thank you senior for your help earlier. Since your junior is injured, he can’t pay you respect.”

“Little things, little things, no need to talk about it,”

The uncle beggar waved his hand clumsily. Lu Yi was so polite that he didn’t know what else to say.

Jinxia continued to search the pirates, this time even the hair on their head was removed, yet she still found nothing. Feeling panicked, she rushed to move here and there, her mouth kept mumbling something, “How is that possible? How come there’s no cure?”

Just when the beggar uncle was about to say something, she already ran out of the willows forest, going to check the remains of some dead pirates outside.

“This girl, panicking like this.” He shook his head, then looked at Lu Yi. After hesitating for a moment, he asked, “Your father is Lu Bing?”

Lu Yi nodded his head.

“Are you really his son? Biological son?” The beggar uncle asked again.

Lu Yi nodded his head again.

The beggar uncle stroked his beard, frowned and said in a loud voice, “God, you are really my grandson!”

Lu Yi looked at him and said nothing.
