Because Jinxia had a lot of thoughts in her head, even after Lu Yi left, she still couldn’t sleep, even though she should be resting. She immediately limped to the kitchen to see what YangYue was cooking.

“Pancakes?” She saw YangYue frying flour dough, “This time, Lu Daren spent money to get some fresh ingredients, so the menu can’t be too simple.”

YangYue laughed, “Where do you think Mrs. Shen is from?”

“She’s heading towards Southeast, it should either be Zhejiang or Fujian.”

“I’m guessing Fujian because earlier when the servant served her tea, she didn’t want Longjing tea but Tieguanyin* tea from Anxi.”

*[Tieguanyin = it’s a type of oolong tea, originated in Anxi County, Fujian, TN]

Jinxia clapped her hands and laughed. “No surprise, Da Yang is always the smartest, you are always quick to predict people’s taste.”

After YangYue finished cooking all the vegetables and meat, he arranged them on the table neatly, then invited Mrs. Shen and the beggar uncle to come to the dining hall. Even though Jinxia’s leg was injured, her friendliness didn’t diminish, “Aunty, is this your first time in Hangzhou? In Hangzhou, there are a lot of good places for sightseeing. For instance, the West lake, Leifeng Pagoda*, Lingyin Monastery… How about staying for a few days here so that I can take you out?”

*[Leifeng Pagoda = It’s a big tower with five plans, on the south side of the West lake, TN]

“Your leg is already injured yet you still want to go out?” The beggar uncle said, “Girl, I remember this is also your first time in Hangzhou, right? And you want to take us out?”

When Mrs. Shen saw the pancakes, she was immediately shocked.

“You also know how to make this?” She asked.

YangYue said, “My father likes this, he often makes it at home too but lake moss is very hard to find.”

Jinxia smiled. “Aunt, if you like the food Da Yang makes, please stay a few more days, let Da Yang cook for you everyday, it’s guaranteed the menu will be different everyday.”

Mrs. Shen knew what she was trying to do, hence she laughed and shook her head, ignoring Jinxia and continuing talking to YangYue. “Is your father from Fujian?”

“No, I think he ate it when he was young and remembered the taste.”

Mrs. Shen laughed, took the pancake, put in the vegetables and said, “I haven’t had them for a long time but didn’t expect to have the chance to eat them here… What’s your father’s name?”

“My father is a superior in LiuShanmen, Yang ChengWan.”

Upon hearing the name, Mrs. Shen’s face immediately changed.

YangYue did not notice the change in Mrs. Shen’s face and awkwardly laughed, “Maybe, you might not have heard of him but because he has a leg injury, he can’t travel or join in on big cases. I am not as smart as him but I continue to learn some skills from him.”

Jinxia was quick to notice her change, therefore she opened her mouth and asked, “Aunt, have you heard of my master?”

“…No, no. I haven’t.” Mrs. Shen regained her consciousness, “This name is very similar to an old friend of mine, may I know which letter is in his name?”

“The bird that travels for a thousand miles, ChengWan, is in the sentence*.”

*[Remember when I said Chinese people like to correlate names and poems, it’s also another way for them to learn a person’s name. A single character can mean a lot to them, so “ChengWan [程万]” if you search it, there are various ways of writing Cheng and Wan, so YangYue used a poem that have his father named. Another reason is because we’re using pinyin for name, so later when you learn Chinese, you will see different tones on pinyin can change the meaning and the characters, TN]

“Oh… The tone is the same but the letters are different, I was wrong.”

Mrs. Shen lowered her head slowly and chewed on the pancake, not knowing why her hands started to tremble. Jinxia, who saw this, became suspicious but because she was trying to think of ways to keep her to stay, she overlooked her suspicions.

“Aunt, do you have any old friends in the Capital? Do you want me to find them? After all, I am a constable in LiuShanmen, even though I am not highly ranked but I do have a lot of connections, finding people shouldn’t be too difficult.” Jinxia said in excitement.

Mrs. Shen turned to look at her, remained silent while continuing to stare at her for a very long time, to the point that it made Jinxia feel uncomfortable.

“Uncle, uncle, uncle… What’s wrong with my aunt?”

The beggar uncle also didn’t understand, so he turned away and sniffed his plate, “You didn’t put any medicine in the food, did you?”

Jinxia replied, annoyed, “Uncle, why are you such an [idiot], no wonder my aunt finds you so annoying.”

At that time, Mrs. Shen slowly opened her mouth to speak, asking a question with a serious face, “Miss Yuan, why do you keep calling me ‘aunt’?”

“…” Jinxia was dumbfounded for a moment, “Well… It’s because I think of you as my family.”

“She considers everyone her family.” The beggar uncle interrupted her words.

Jinxia said in dissatisfaction, “Are you my uncle?”

“Are you my [biological] niece?”

“Don’t forget, you still have a grandson here.” Jinxia cleared her throat and continued with her business, “He told me just now that he hopes you can stay here a few days, so he has a chance to be filial to you. This way, when he returns to the Capital, he can explain this to his father and ancestors. Uncle, look at how thoughtful he is, how about you fulfil his wish?”

Upon hearing her words, the beggar uncle was very satisfied but didn’t think too much of it and, laughing, said, “You, girl, are very good at talking. I think it’s much better if he invited me back to the Capital, then along with his father he could be filial to me. That would be much more meaningful, right?”

“Of course!” Jinxia said firmly and shamelessly, “Right now, I will go ask Lu Daren to write a letter to his father, tell him to prepare a big house with an open door. Then, uncle, you should stay here for a few days until the letter arrives, then we can go to the Capital together.”

YangYue, who was beside her, started to cough, signaling Jinxia not to speak carelessly.

The beggar uncle reminded her, “Girl, you are not married to him yet.”

As he was speaking, Lu Yi slowly stepped into the room, said pleasantly, “Jinxia, if the seniors have made up their mind to leave, you shouldn’t keep persuading them anymore. Regarding A’Rui, I will find another physician. The only thing is, the city isn’t very safe right now… On your way walking towards the Southeast, Seniors, please be careful. Apart from the traveling expense, there is also a letter I wrote personally. If you encounter any difficulties, I hope this letter will help seniors get out of trouble.” He passed a small wooden box to the beggar uncle.

“You wrote a letter?” The beggar uncle was about to open the box but was held back by Lu Yi.

“When you need it, then open it.” Lu Yi said in a humble tone, “I also realized that the words of a lowly person like me don’t mean much, it’s just lucky to have a father with some status, at least the outsiders still respect him, so I used his name instead.”

Jinxia wasn’t sure what Lu Yi meant by that. While guessing, she heard Mrs. Shen say, “We won’t go anymore. I’ll stay and treat the person.”

“Aunt!” Jinxia exclaimed happily, “Will you really stay? Why?”

The beggar uncle also did not understand, “Why aren’t we going anymore?”

Mrs. Shen’s face was as calm as the surface of a river. She explained slowly, “The children’s intentions are so sincere, the food is also very delicious, it’s alright to stay a few more days.”

Lu Yi did not expect Mrs. Shen to suddenly change her mind, so he laughingly said, “Very good, I will alert the inn’s owner to prepare rooms for Seniors.”

“No need.” Mrs. Shen looked at Jinxia, “Don’t waste your money. This child and I can sleep together.”

Jinxia was dumbfounded again.

Mrs. Shen said casually, “Your leg is still injured, staying together is easier to take care of it. I won’t waste you calling me aunt for nothing.”

“Then I…” The beggar uncle turned his head to look at YangYue, saying seriously, “Are you a loud snorer?”

“…”

While Mrs. Shen was busy performing acupuncture on A’Rui, Jinxia slowly dragged her foot back and pulled Lu Yi aside. She lowered her voice and said quietly, “Have you checked Mrs. Shen’s status?”

“Huh?” Lu Yi furrowed his eyebrows as he looked at her feet, “Why don’t you go rest first?”

“You don’t have to hide it from me, if you didn’t know about her status, you wouldn’t have written a letter.” Jinxia said, “If they meet pirates, what’s the point of your letter? Surely, if the government officials give them a hard time, then they can use the letter to get out of trouble.”

Lu Yi sighed, not knowing whether to complain or be happy that she was too smart.

“I just got the news from the pigeons.” It would be better if he went straight to the point, “Mrs. Shen… In Fujian Quanzhou, there’s a Lin family, six generations of descendants of physicians; Mrs. Shen is the youngest daughter of the Lin family, her real name is Lin Lu Yu. Years ago, she was betrothed to Shen Duan but before they could get married, problems had arisen with Shen Duan.”

“Who is Shen Duan?”

“You don’t remember Shen Duan? Then you should remember his younger brother, Shen Lian*.”

“Shen Lian!” Jinxia was very surprised, she was slowly piecing the puzzles together, “Shen Lian was harmed by Yan Song and his two children, that means his brother couldn’t escape either… No wonder Mrs. Shen remained unmarried… But that doesn’t make sense. If she’s not married, then she should be living with her family. Is it possible that her family was also involved?”

*[Reminder: Shen Lian was mentioned early in the story when Yang ChengWan and Lu Yi met on the boat. Shen Lian died because he tried to expose one of Yan Song’s crimes but instead of being rewarded he was sentenced to be beaten with a wood plank and exiled out of the great wall of Juyongguan.  Then he was killed in Xuanfu, while his children were beaten to death in prison, TN]

Lu Yi sighed, “This matter did not involve her family but her family consists of an older sister and her sister’s husband Xia Zhangqing.”

“Xia Zhangqing?” Jinxia felt like she’d heard this name before.

“Xia Zhangqing is the eldest son of Xia Yan*.”

*[Reminder: Xia Yan was mentioned during the birthday gift robbery incident on the boat with Sha Xiuzhu. Xia Yan was the grand chief secretary before Yan Song. Qiu Luan (The birthday gift owner) reported to the Emperor that Xia Yan and Zeng Xian (a military general, the one that Sha Xiuzhu respected) were working together to rebel. Now, remember it’s against the law for trying to make connections with the people in the circle of the Emperor. Xia Yan was sentenced to be beheaded in public and his wife Su Liu was exiled to Guangxi. Xia Yan was considered to be a great person but, in the end, was still harmed by Yan Song, TN]

The son of the former Grand Chief Secretary, Xia Yan… Now Jinxia finally understood everything.

“One fatal mistake of a person and his entire family was destroyed. After Xia Yan died, the entire Lin family was also executed. At that time, Lin Lu Yu was being sent to her grandmother’s house, thankfully escaping death.” Lu Yi looked at Jinxia, “That’s why if Mrs. Shen still wants to help you, then I’m very grateful but I don’t want to make things difficult for her.”

“It’s unexpected that Mrs. Shen’s life was so harsh.” Jinxia sighed, “But why did she suddenly agree to stay?”

Lu Yi shook his head, “I also don’t understand it either, is it possible that your sweet words actually worked?”

“Sweet words… It’s called being brilliant.” Jinxia gritted her teeth, “My lips were almost grinded to pieces!”

Cen Fu was seen rushing from the outside, quickly reporting to Lu Yi, “Young Master, soldiers have been sent but most of them have fled the village, only the parents and children were found in the spot.”

Lu Yi nodded his head.

“General Hu also went alone, finding the room where Xia Zheng was slaughtered, the weapon used was a blunted sickle.” Cen Fu sighed, “…If he was slaughtered alive, Xia Zheng must’ve suffered a lot. When General Hu was informed, I heard that he fell off his carriage while getting off and had to be supported when he entered the house.”

“What now?”

“I’ve already asked around, they said he’s experiencing shock and heart-wrenching but he’s finally awake now and there’s no danger to his life.”

Jinxia was confused, “He knows for sure this day will come, so why did he send Xia Zheng over there? When he beheaded Wang Zhi, he should’ve already guessed that Xia Zheng would die.”

Lu Yi recalled Hu Zongxian’s condition yesterday when he was holding a banquet. He kept himself occupied by drinking and dancing, he must’ve already known about it, it’s just that he was waiting for the news of Xia Zheng’s death.

“When was Xia Zheng sent, have you already investigated?” Lu Yi asked Cen Fu.

Cen Fu nodded his head, “During the fall of last year, before the mid-autumn festival, Xia Zheng was heading to Zhou Mountain and at that time, Wang Zhi’s adopted son, Mao Haifeng was in Zhoushan. After that, Xia Zheng never came back.”

“Last fall!” Jinxia reminded Lu Yi, “The two ladies said last night that Hu Zongxian was in a good mood during the fall of last year and even wanted to take them to pray on Mount Putuo, does this have something to do with it?”

Lu Yi was silent for a moment, the corners of his eyes quickly glanced into the back room, there was a shadow passing by and disappearing. He slowly laughed.

“It’s already late, you all should get some rest.”

Cen Fu saluted and withdrew.

Jinxia also wanted to go back to the room, hence she took a few steps but was suddenly pulled back, then her body was floating in the air… It turned out it was Lu Yi who was carrying her.

“I don’t want to go to sleep, I want to see A’Rui!” Jinxia pointed at A’Rui’s room.

“He’s being treated right now, with no clothes on.”

Jinxia did not understand what he was trying to say, “It doesn’t matter, I don’t mind.”

“I do.”

Although he was a grown man and also a JinYiWei, his thoughts were so ancient. Jinxia tried to explain that seeing a man with no shirt on would not give her stingy eyes. Especially since she was a constable,  she had already seen people with no clothes on, dead or alive, and therefore it didn’t really matter to her. As a result, Lu Yi tightened his eyebrows even more and asked her, “If there were a woman in front of me, with no clothes on, would I be allowed to look at her?”

“Of course not! You’ll get stingy eyes!” Jinxia immediately said with a strict tone.

“It’s good that you understand this.”

Lu Yi continued walking just like that.
