Leca’s Harvest (IV)

Translator’s Note: So my life got super crazy! Wow. I’m gonna try and get back into the grind. I am taking a JLPT in December so I do have to be a fastidious student now! Anyways, I’ve kept you thirsty long enough my friends.

“Carlsen, Rourke told me about the flower liqueur. What is so interesting about a Leca flower-infused liqueur?”

It was the first question Vio had asked to Carlson, who had come to visit in place of Rourke.

After taking off his hat, Carlsen stroked his golden-brown hair as he furrowed his brow. He was an ordinary-looking man with a lanky build, and nothing was unique about him.

“Rourke… I told you to shut your trap because I’d get reported.”

Carlsen muttered with a disgusted tone. He sat on a couch with a bag under his arm. After having murmured angrily, he took a small bottle out of the bag he was holding, and it contained a transparent liquid with Leca flowers soaking in it.

“As part of the report, I brought the liqueur to show you. It is made by soaking the flower in sugar and liquor.”

“Wow, it’s so beautiful.”

The color of the Leca flower was bright and vivid, as if the alcohol had acted as a preservative. The Leca flowers floated in the liqueur, showing off perfect specimens.

“So what’s so interesting about it?”

Legion asked the question, and Carlsen grinned in response.

“If you taste it for yourself, you’ll understand.”

“Really?”

Vio rang a bell to call for the butler to bring him a glass. Jill brought over two small flutes. Carlsen poured the liqueur into the two glasses and presented them to Vio and Legion. Legion refused with a troubled look on his face.

“No, I’m in the middle of work…”

“It’s just a taste. It’s fine. I also usually only drink alcohol when it’s a special occasion, but I’ll make an exception in this case.”

Vio said as he took a glass and took a whiff of the aroma.

In the Lesserhain territory, 12 was the legal drinking age. Vio was now 15 years old and didn’t mind drinking, but he had experienced enough drinking in his previous life. He knew alcohol was bad for one’s health. Instead, he would instead drink tea that was more palatable than a glass of alcohol.

“Then, if you’ll excuse me for just a taste test, I guess I will go ahead and try it.”

Legion took a glass and gulped it down. Vio stared at him, waiting for a response. Legion murmured.

“The aroma has a faint scent of a floral bouquet, and the taste is delicious… but this is…”

Vio asked Legion, who put his hand on his chest in surprise.

“What is it?”

“I think my magic has been restored.”

“…What!?”

The response was so unexpected that Vio squealed in excitement. Vio also took a sip as a test and basked in the sweet taste. Little-by-little, sip-by-sip, he felt his magic power being enriched as much as his taste buds were.

“This is interesting… Amazing.”

It was a revolutionary innovation.

Until now, restoring magic power had only been possible by resting or using a spirit stone. None of them had ever known something like an alcoholic beverage to help recover magic.

It was terrific, but then a chill ran down Vio’s spine.

Carlsen didn’t realize this, but somehow, this was way worse than bootlegging liquor.

“Carlsen, who knows about this?”

“Huh? Only the three tax collectors and the ones who made it.”

“What about the family?”

“No. I only made a small amount, so I only had planned to give some to the family after Lord Violant had sampled it first.”

“As of now, you must all keep your mouths shut about this… This could lead to everyone’s heads rolling. Worst case scenario, the Lord will kill everyone who knows.”

“What?!”

In response to Vio’s words, Carlsen’s voice raised in shock, and the blood drained from his face.

“Wh-why? I have discovered such a wonderful thing. Isn’t that worthy of a reward?”

“This isn’t just wonderful; it’s world-changing. Something like this is like discovering how to turn metal into gold. This had to be a secret kept from the outside world. If my father discovers this, he will find a reason to execute you and others under some pretext or another.”

“But, but-but-but, that’s…”

Vio glanced at Carlsen before putting his hand on his chin in thought.

“…I see. Even with the candy, only a small amount of magic was recovered. So why did it cause such a drastic effect with alcohol added? Does the chemical dissolve into the alcohol? Perhaps the juice leaks out?”

“Huh? Do you mean like syrup? Syrup had been made from the flowers, but it didn’t have this effect.”

Carlsen gave his answer while quickly glancing between Vio and Legion with a desperate look on his face.

“So that means the alcohol is the reagent… Alright. I’ll have to figure out a way to report it to the Lord so that you three are not implicated in any way… Listen, if you don’t want to die, you cannot tell Gary anything about this. His testimony would only be more damaging.”

“I understand! I will take it to my grave!”

Vio urged Carlsen, who had his back standing straight up as an arrow, to take his leave.

“The rest of the report can be made tomorrow. I’ll keep that small bottle of liqueur for now, so just leave the papers behind. Go back to town immediately, and have them dispose of the remaining liqueur. It’s better than losing your life. Come on, hurry up!”

“Yes sir!”

Carlsen, in his haste to pull the papers from his bag, messed up and the stack broke apart with the sheets flying everywhere. They were left strewn across the table.

“I will collect them, so please go.”

“Thank you. Thank you very much.”

Carlsen flew out of the room, seemingly grateful for Legion’s offer to clean up.

“…Well, now that I’ve said that, what do I do next?”

Vio held his head in his hands and let out a sigh. Legion replied in an indiscernible way.

“Great discoveries aren’t always great, I guess.”

“Yes. I wish I could have been happy, but this is too dangerous. It’s a level that will cause a significant change in life throughout Edelbran. Even the way wars are fought will change.”

Spirit stones were too expensive to afford, but Leca flowers were cheap. If it were possible to recover magic just by drinking alcohol, everyone would try to get their hands on it.

The cultivation of Leca flowers worldwide might have devastating effects on agriculture and ecosystems.

“I want to keep it a secret, but the consequences of this being leaked are so dangerous― what should I do if it does get out? If I were near a temple to the Great Spirit, I would rush over and consult with them.”

If it were a miracle of the Great Spirit, the populace would surely accept it without giving it much thought. However, if that happened, the shrine would have a large influx of power, and the political balance between church and state would collapse.

“What if you just released it as a medicinal drink instead of an alcoholic beverage? It would be harder to obtain if we labeled it as medicine.”

“Yes… But my father may try to keep it a secret. It would be best for this secret not to be confined to Leca, and maybe I should report it to the royal family before my father.”

“Using the king’s prestige as leverage for your personal safety?”

“That’s right… If Leca and Amade become territories under the direct control of the royal family, the problem will be solved for the time being.”

“If you approach it that way, won’t you not only end up quarreling with your brother but also the estate of the duke?”

Vio nodded in the affirmative to his question.

The land of the Lesserhain territory and the surrounding regions would likely generate an immense profit, so they would forcibly be returned to the royal family. Any duke, not just Lasserhain, would be angry and try to eliminate the threat of that happening.

In other words, it is pretty natural to punish Vio for damaging the interests of the Lesserhain family. The punishment here would surely be death.

“My head is spinning… What should I do, Legi?”

“I see. Lord Violant, I will stand by your side no matter what decision you make.”

“…Thank you.”

They were words of reassurance, but they also illuminated one answer.

“Leca will flourish, but it will be on a tangent I had not imagined.”

If it were under the direct control of the royal family, it would definitely prosper.

However, Vio had been planning to have the crops crossbred so that the potency was richer.

Vio let out a dry laugh, and Legion looked at him with bitterness.

“For the time being, we must get through the seneschal’s visit. The harvest festival should proceed as normal, or people might get suspicious.”

“Yeah…”

While replying, Vio tried to calm his pounding heart.

“For the time being, I will keep this liqueur in the safe in my room.”

“Yes, please do so. It is the thing we must keep most safe right now.”

Almost every master’s room had a safe. In Vio’s room, there was a hidden safe behind a painting on the wall.

“I’ll go to the room while Gary is gone. Legi, go open the window to ventilate and put the glass away.”

“Understood.”

Vio and Legion began, for the moment, with the concealment of the fact that they had been drinking Leca flower liqueur.

Vio corked the bottle tightly and headed to the room.

He succeeded in concealing the fact for the time being, but he was afraid that the effect Leca flower liqueur held would be revealed.

—Author’s Note—

I apologize to all of you for reading this.

I was making a plot in the direction of a happy-go-lucky development, but I decided to revise it.

When you think about it, it’s a rather dangerous discovery.

Imagine a game world where MP-recovering ether didn’t exist, but one day, ether was invented and it became easier to recover magic power. → As a result, the number of magic users will increase → War will shift from martial arts + magic to completely magic-centered → The world will become a vortex of chaos.

You cannot just say “oh, flower wine looks pretty” and move on with life.

Then how about I don’t make magic recovery an effect? I thought about it, but how could I if it was already able to do so in the ink? It had to be…

There is no choice but to correct the trajectory no matter what.

Generally speaking, historically, just letting a sheep with superior quality wool out of the country without permission is punishable by death (in European history).

It’s too dangerous of a discovery, isn’t it?

It’s a pitfall that surprised me too, but if you want to keep the story’s ending and the main plot the same, you’ll have no choice but to tweak the story in between.

For the time being, I have no choice but to proceed with the Harvest Festival arc and then add one section after that…

This is long enough, and it’s going to be a long story anyways.

I’m sorry to everyone who is looking forward to reading it (- -;), but for the time being, I’ll revise the plot
