Hearing what Martha said, Jiang Yuyan looked at Noah and Xiao Min who just entered the home.
”He must be in office,” Noah informed, who just heard what Martha said.
Jiang Yuyan looked at the time and it was late, “What is he doing in the office this late?” she asked with a high tone.
”He spends nights in the office sometimes while working,” Noah replied, “I will go to the office.”
”No need. You can go and rest,” she instructed and went to her room. Jiang Yuyan freshened up and lay in bed. She tried to sleep but just could not. An hour passed by with her tossing and turning into bed and she finally got up. She put on the trench coat over her night pajamas and a scarf on her neck and stepped out of the home.
She got the car keys from the security guard and drove away, not informing anyone where she was going. Soon her car stopped in front of the office building. Jiang Yuyan was worried for Lu Lijun and she could not just sit and let him be like this, whether the outcome could be anything.
She went to the office floor and looked at Lu Lijun’s office door where she could see the lights were still on while the entire office was in the dark.
With hesitant steps, she went to the office and knocked on the door. There was no reply from inside so she opened the door. The moment she opened it she saw the entire office room was filled with smoke. Before she could cough she covered her nose with the scarf and entered the room only to see Lu Lijun sitting in his chair while facing the glass wall behind his work table. His fingers held the cigarette that was still burning and half-finished and he looked like feel asleep.
”Lu Lijun,” she called, seeing him surrounded by this much smoke and feeling worried.
Cough! Cough!
Lu Lijun opened his eyes and saw Jiang Yuyan standing next to his chair while covering her nose with the scarf and suppressing her coughing. He immediately stood up and held her hand to take her out of that room.
He dragged her out of his office and closed the door of the office while he stood inside. She heard him talking from inside the room, “Stay in the reception area, I’ll be there.”
Jiang Yuyan listened to him and went to the reception area where she stood looking out of the glass wall and coughing a little.
Lu Lijun cleared his office from the smoke and changed into other clothes which don’t stink of smoke. After some time he came out and went to Jiang Yuyan as he offered her water.
Jiang Yuyan accepted water and had it. Her throat felt better and she looked at him.
Before she could say a word, she heard him asking coldly as if he was not pleased to see her there. “Why are you here?”
He didn’t look like the same Lu Lijun she used to know. He looked suddenly grown up into a different man that she never knew. He was not that stubborn guy who threw tantrums in front of her but was now someone different she could not see through.
She felt intimidated by him and felt like crossing the unknown territory she should not have and its owner didn’t find it fine. “You didn’t return home….”
”It’s my normal way of working. I usually stay in the office,” he replied.
She inhaled deeply to get herself back in front of this cold man and asked, “While surrounded by that smoke? Do you want to kill yourself?”
”You don’t have to worry about me,” he replied.
She greeted her teeth, “When you said you wanted to go away and needed some time, did you mean it this way. By working yourself day and night and smoking like this. Is this the way you are going to make everything right?”
He stared at her for a while and said, “I don’t know any other way.”
”This is not what you should do to yourself. You can do it even without letting yourself be harmed.”
Lu Lijun stayed quiet for a while and took a glass of water from her, “If you are done with your work in England, I think you should return to China.”
”I will. Not like I want to stay here. But first, you need to take care of yourself and….”
”You want me to make everything right?” He interrupted her and she nodded.
He continued, “Then you should return to China and stop caring for me. Though you are my elder brother’s wife and my family member, you don’t have a right to control my life. What you have done for me till now, I am grateful to you but now you don’t have to. I can take care of myself.”
”Lu Lijun….”
”Mrs Lu Qiang, I think you should return home,” he said and turned around to go back to his office.
Jiang Yuyan followed him and held his hand. He stopped and turned to look at her. Her eyes filled with pleading to stop him. Once again he felt like the emotions he tried to bury deep down in his heart was coming back to him whenever he looked into her eyes.
He could not let it happen. He didn’t wish to leave ever so he needed to act as if he felt nothing for her. “What are you doing?” he asked.
”I will go back but you have to stop smoking like this,” she said.
”I will try,” he said, “Now go back home.”
She nodded and let go of his hand. She turned and left. Lu Lijun looked at her retreating back and felt like stopping her but he controlled. She left while he returned to his office, “She will be fine on her own,” he stopped himself from worrying for her.
Jiang Yuyan returned home. Someone was waiting for her and the moment he saw her he dialled the number.
”She just returned home,” Noah informed on the phone.
Hearing it, Lu Lijun felt relieved and hung up the call.
